Update on 80-20's Political Actions

80-20's modus operanti is to reward politicians who share APAs' rightful concerns and punish those who don't. Since its inception, it has shown its effectiveness in many ways, including non-political events such as asking Abercrombie and Finch to withdraw its offensive t-shirts, and expressing our displeasure at Seattle Time's headlines on Michelle Kwan. Here is a report updating 80-20's effectiveness in political matters.

(a) At its inception, 80-20 sent in writing to both political parties, its aspiration to see an APA appointed to a cabinet office. That request has been honored by both President Clinton, a Democrat, and President Bush, a Republican.

(b) Since its inception, 80-20 has issued only one DIRECT political demand. It demanded that the Republican party withdraw an infamous "Daisy" TV ad. It was done the next day.

(c) Since its inception, 80-20 has endorsed only one candidate -- Gore. Although Gore didn't win, 80-20 delivered "more than 2 out of every 3 APA votes to Gore," according to a formal national poll, partially funded by the Nat'l Science Foundation. 80-20's success in delievering a bloc vote is now written up in not only articles but also a book "Click to Democracy: The Power of the Internet to Change Political Apathy into Action," which discusses how the CNN polls also show 80-20's success. (d) Since its inception, 80-20 has only censured two politicians. One was Congressman Christopher Cox , a Republican, who chaired the infamous "Cox Committee Report." The other was Ralph Appezzato, Mayor of Alameda, who made a racist attack on an APS candidate Alice Lai-Bitker in a party primary for supervisor in Alameda County.
Since our censure of Mr. Cox, he has(a) hired a person to handle public relations for him with the APA community, and (b) approached C-100, a well-known Ch. Am. organization, and asked for a meeting.

Mr. Ralph Appezzato, who was to be in a run-off with Bitker, unfortunately committed suicide on 9/16/02. While 80-20 censured Mr. Appezzato for his racist politics, and obviously meant to put pressure on him, it never intended to wish him ill in a personal sense. He was known to have prostate cancer. 80-20 shares the grief of his family.


What does all that prove? UNITY IS POWER.

To encourage participation in its election, 80-20 tried hard to encourage female and non-Chinese American candidates. In addition, 80-20 will pose the following header on its web page where voting occurs:

A Role Model/ Paul Igasaki

(1) WHAT A ROLE MODEL
80-20 sponsored a contest for its members to help recruit new members. The winner of the contest would win a round trip, economy airfare ticket to Asia.

Susan Wu of Alabama won the contest with 9 recruits*. When she was offered the ticket, she wanted to donate it back to 80-20. When 80-20 replied and said, "Thanks, but you've earned it!" Susan Wu replied:

"I recruited 80-20 members because I believe it is our duty. I am only doing my part. My donation is from the bottom of my heart and I am sincere about my decision. "

Guess what? Susan Wu is only 70 years young. What a role model!

*If everyone of our 1600 members had done what she did, our membership would have increased to 14,400.

(2) Paul Igasaki -- VICE CHAIR & ACTING CHAIR OF EEOC JACL (Japanese Am. Citizens League) and OCA (Organization of Chinese Ams.) has each passed a resolution urging President Bush to re-appoint Paul Igasaki to the Equal Employment opportunity Commission (EEOC). A CHALLENGE to Our Best and Brightest

Will you run for an office in 80-20 in order to serve our community? There will be no pay, lots of work, lots of headache and some out of pocket expenses. That is 80-20's CHALLENGE to our best and brightest.

You may ask, why should I take this challenge? Here are two BIG reasons.

(1) Who gets cussed out the most in America, day after day?

Answer: The President of the USA, no matter who that person is. Statesmen have always known: "It's a privilege to serve. Criticism comes with the turf."

(2) Why would anyone be so masochistic?
It is because the best and brightest are steeled by a value
system, eloquently expressed by Theodore Roosevelt:

"It's not the critic who counts; not he who describes how the mighty had allen; and how the doer of deeds could have done them better.

The credit goes to he who is actually in the arena; whose faced is marred with dust, sweat and blood; who tries valiantly; and who comes up short, time and again."

Our community needs you. 80-20 needs you.

There is no shame in wanting to serve and not getting elected.

There is only shame in not wanting to serve or not daring to run. Again quoting Theodore Roosevelt:

".. He (the one in the arena) is at least better than those timid souls who know neither defeat nor victory."

80-20 Rated Tops in the Nation

Three scholars of the Univ. of Syracuse will publish a book that rates 80-20 as one of the two most successful, perhaps even the most effective, cyberspace political organizations in the nation in the 2000 election season. The book's title is "Click on Democracy: The Power of the Internet to Change Political Apathy into Action" S. B. Woo, President of 80-20 , was invited to write a "Foreword" for the book, which will be published by a division of HarperCollins. Chapter 2 of the book states: ".. for a Woo- or Bogosian-style success story in 2004 or beyond .." By "Woo," the authors mean the 80-20 PAC, of which S. B. Woo is president. Bogosian, Joe is the head of Young Professionals for Bush, the other most effective cyberspace political org. The book devotes 1/3 of Chapter 8 to describing 80-20 and its successes.

The idea for this book came from Dean David Rubin of the S.I. Newhouse School of Public Communications, Syracuse University. He suggested to his faculty that the 2000 national election would be the first one in which the Internet could play an important part. He invited any faculty members interested in researching the internet's role to come up with a plan for the research, and possibly for writing a book.

Profs. Steve Davis, Larry Elin and Grant Reeher organized a research team of about 10 persons to monitor Internet efforts of political parties, traditional media, and other politically oriented groups. They rated 80-20 as perhaps the most successful cyberspace political organization in the 2000 election season in achieving its goals and creating SOCIAL CAPITAL. Social capital is the connection among individuals, giving rise to social networks, reciprocity and trustworthiness . This "capital" enhances general happiness, health, and the quality of participants' political life.

S. B. Woo said, "80-20 is greatly honored. 80-20 was only 3 years old when evaluated, and yet it was rated as one of nation's best two. To my knowledge, no other Asian American civic or political organizations have gotten that kind of attention -- selected for careful evaluation by prestigious mainstream organizations, twice in the last two years."

He continued, "The other assessment of 80-20's effectiveness was a national survey led by a group of professors from Utah, Harvard, Yale and Florida, and sponsored by The National Science Foundation. The national survey showed that APAs voted for Gore, as suggested by 80-20, 'by more than 2 to 1' in the 2000 election. The real message of the two evaluations is clear. Our community's political clout is winning respect from the mainstream society, and that 80-20 is a significant organization. The credit goes to all who support 80-20. Politics clout depends on numbers. 80-20 now has 600,000 supporters on its e-mail list."

80-20 will hold an election in October

Do you want a politically powerful APA organization? If yes, then get involved to build it up.

80-20 will hold an election in October this year.

It will be open and democratic. Any dues-paying member can run for any office. No nomination by any 80-20 Committee is needed! Every elected position will have at least two candidates.

However, fair and written rules are still necessary to ensure an orderly and rational election. Here is the essential information. Please read.

1) What offices are available?

Four officers, the Chair of the Nomination Committee for the 2003 election, and x number of Board members will be elected. The four officers are the president, vice president, treasurer and secretary. They each serve a two year term. "x" will be determined at a later date when 80-20 finds out from YOU, how many of YOU intend to run.

2) Who can run?

Any one who has enrolled as a dues-paying member by July 31, 2002, pays a filing fee of $50, and files a resume and a proper statement of candidacy. The statement of candidacy must be of 150 words or less stating his/her qualifications, what he/she has done for 80-20, and what he/she aims to get done for the APA community. The
filing fee, resume and statement of candidacy must be submitted by August 31, 2002.

A nominal filing fee is a standard procedure for most open elections. The fee will be returned to all winning candidates.

3) When and Where to file your candidacy?

YOU can file your candidacy between now and Aug. 31, 2002. Send in your filing fee ASAP so that 80-20 knows how many will be running, and you can formally begin seeking support for your candidacy. Send fee and filing papers to:

4) Who can vote?

Any person who has enrolled as a dues-paying member by August 15,
2002 can vote.

5) Open Information:

A list of eligible voters will be posted by August 31, 2002.

A list of candidates will be posted on our web site by 9/15/02. Information will include the offices they seek, together with their resumes and statements of candidacy.

6) Ensuring Fairness:

A Committee of 3 persons, none of whom will be a candidate in the said election, will be appointed by the Steering Committee to monitor the election procedure and results. . Security procedures similar to those used in the election of 33 delegates to the Endorsement Committee will be adopted. Balloting details and results will be kept for six months in the event of a challenge.

7) First Date of Voting & A Secure Voting Method:

The first date of voting is Oct. 21, 2002.

Members will cast ballots on 80-20's web site using a security code that will be sent by 80-20 in a personal e-mail, except for about 30 members who enrolled as members using fax numbers.

80-20's Flag Project Spreading like Prairie Fire

When 80-20 started the Flag Project a year ago, individuals responded, but few groups did and "seas of flags" were rare. This year? Significant improvement! Even
the mainstream media have reported on "seas of flags'" created by 80-20 supporters:

Oakland Tribune -- Patriotism Will Fly High in Chinatown "When almost 200 volunteers finish placing American flags high and low around 11 blocks of Oakland's Chinatown .... the place will look like a sea of red, white and blue. ...."

Dallas Morning News -- Asian American Unfurling Patriotism "Chinatown might be the last place you'd expect a sea of red, white and blue flags this holiday. But there they are. ...."

How encouraging. This kind of news coverage helps to erase our foreigners image. Acting in unison is power!!

A Special July 4th Message

The nature of 80-20's mission -- to fight society's discrimination against you and win equal opportunity for you -- compels 80-20's e-mail messages to dwell almost exclusively on the negative aspects of America. Hence, 80-20 would be remiss if it doesn't use the occasion of July 4th to celebrate what is right about America.

Two features of American benefit most of us greatly.

First, when compared with other nations, America is the mostopen to and inclusive of immigrants. That so many of us are here provides the best proof.

Secondly, America is the land of opportunity. Not all of us are rich and famous. Many of us have faced the glass ceiling. However, what better proof is there in acknowledging our "land of opportunity" than that most of us are living well?

80-20 wants to use this occasion to express our collective thanks to the nation and urge all to be patriotic.

Loving America, however, is not equivalent to always agreeing with our government, our officials or our President -- a concept that is not familiar to many of us. Officials and presidents come and go. Our government is but a tool to serve us. If you don't agree with a given policy, feel free to speak up. You are a part of America. You have the right to give your vision of America.

It is the nation, the American people as a whole and our constitution, to whom we owe our gratitude, respect and dedication. Indeed, the freedom of expression is one of the great blessings of liberty that we enjoy as Americans.

Generating Positive Image for the APA Community

1) GENERATING POSITIVE IMAGE !

Associated Press, a worldwide media service, is doing a fairly big article on 80-20's Flag Project. It may be carried in YOUR local papers. Please look for it. Topics covered include the following.

4500 poster flags will be up in store windows owned by APAs in big cities in CA, NY, Texas, and other states. If you live in those states, please look for the poster flags in Koreatown, Chinatown, etc. The flags have 80-20's name and web site address. A SPECIAL THANKS goes to all volunteers who distributed & put up the flags.

Radio ads urging APAs to display flags on July 4th shall be broad- cast in many big cities in 3 languages, Vietnamese, Korean and Chinese, from 6/28 to July 4th.

2) STAFF CHANGE

Joy Chang, 80-20's Special Assistant till now, will be leaving to attend Hastings Law School on 6/31. Many at 80-20 are starting to miss her already. Best wishes, Joy. We appreciated your dedication to 80-20.

Jing-Li Yu was selected to replace Joy, after a national search. Jing's SAT scores were 800 in verbal, 750 in math; his Graduate Record Exam scores were 98% in both categories. He was an economics major at U. of Penn and a cum laude graduate of Penn after only 2 years. At the age of 21, he has finished his course requirement for a Master's degree in Social Sciences at the U. of Chicago. He comes very highly recommended.

Tim Chen is still 80-20's Special Assistant stationed in San Francisco.

Erase our "Foreigners" Image on July 4th

What if people always see a sea of American flags on July 4th, when they drive through major APA population centers such as Chinatown, Indiatown, Japantown, Koreatown, or Little Saigon?

Will they STILL think that APAs are foreigners? No, because the best way to solve an image problem is to present a diametrically opposite images.

80-20 Provides A Much-Needed Community Service

80-20 will add a much-needed community service. It'll help APA candidates who come under racist attacks. Two such attacks occurred in this year's primary contests in CA. 80-20 shall help the attacked candidates with its powerful e-mail list
and up to $10,000 of funding immediately. More funding is possible but will require approval by 80-20's Steering Comm. on a case-by-case basis. Here is why such a service is necessary and effective.

1) Are there examples of racist attacks on APA candidates?

Yes. Just this year, there were two alleged racist attacks on APA candidates running in California's primaries. One alleged attack was on Alice Lai-Bitker who is running for County Board of Supervisors in Alameda County. Her opponent Ralph ppezzato, a Caucasian, sent out campaign materials asking "What color is your supervisor?" and "Is it us or them?" Alice will be in a runoff with Ralph Appezzato this
coming November. Another alleged case involved Christopher Gabaldon, a Filipino Am. candidate running for State Assembly in CA's 18th District. Allegedly, his opponent insinuated that Gabaldon took money coming from the Philippines. Perhaps as a result of the insinuation, Gabaldon lost in the primary.

2) Why not let the APA candidates defend themselves?

It's difficult for APA candidates under racist attacks to defend themselves, because voters expect them to say that the attackers are wrong. If neutral bodies such as the mainstream media and 80-20 come to their defense, voters are much more likely to listen and vote against the racist attackers.

3) Why does 80-20 propose such a policy NOW?

Racist attacks on APA political candidates are expected to increase significantly, because more APAs are running for offices and the importance of the offices they seek are increasing.

4) Can you tell me about 80-20's policy in more detail?

First, the attacked candidate must file a request with 80-20 to investigate the alleged racist attack. In other words, 80-20 stays out unless a candidate asks for help.

If a written request is filed and if 80-20's findings support the allegations, then 80-20 will provided help. The degree of support depends on the flagrancy of the racist attacks.

In a clearly racist attack, 80-20 will use all within its power to defeat the racist candidate. 80-20's measures includes using its considerable ability to communicate quickly with 430,000 APA supporters and the mainstream media on behalf of the attacked candidate. It may also spend immediately up to $10,000 to support the attacked APA candidate or punish his/her racist opponent. Expenditure beyond $10,000 will require explicit approval by 80-20's Steering Committee in a case-by-case basis.

The worst racist attacks are normally mounted a day or two before the election so as to deny the APA candidate a chance to point out the racist nature of the attack to voters and to prevent outraged but previously uninvolved entities like the media and 80-20 from joining the fight against racism. 80-20 therefore resolves that, should a politician win the election by such devious means, 80-20 will target to defeat that politician in his/her next election.

Racist attacks are normally designed by high-priced political consultants, though it requires approval of the candidates to implement the attack. 80-20 aims to widely publicize the names of such unprincipled political consultants with the aim to drive them and their firms out of the political consultation business.

5) Will 80-20's policy stop racist attacks permanently?

Yes. When politicians and their consultants find out that a racial attack on any APA candidate anywhere will mean an invitation for 80-20 to come in and help defeat them in either this or the next election, then such attacks will stop. However, it
will take a few election cycles for the dire consequences of such attacks to get around in the political world.

UNITY IS POWER - another example

Asian Pacific American college students and young professionals
e-mailed 80-20 asking it to take action. They were outraged because
Abercrombie & Fitch (A&F), an upscale retailer, put out a new line
of 4 T-shirts with derogatory portrayals of Asians.

80-20 called Michael Jeffries, Chairman and CEO of A&F this morning.
Two hours later, an executive with A&F responded to 80-20 by saying that those $25 T-shirts have been taken off the market.

80-20 wants to THANK all who e-mailed and assisted 80-20 in this matter. It also wants to applaud those who have already communicated their displeasure with A&F directly. Although 80-20 found those T-shirts offensive, it wants to commend Abercrombie & Fitch for its swift action in realizing its insensitivity and pulling the products immediately.

For those who want to know the events leading to this happy ending,
here is a brief description. One of A&F's new T-shirts depicts Asians with slanted eyes and conical hats. The T-shirt, with two Asian men at ``Wong Brothers Laundry Service,'' carries the logo: ``Two Wongs Can Make It White.'' Another T-shirt, called``Buddha Bash'' has a smiling Buddha figure with the logo: ``Get Your Buddha On The Floor.'' [Pictures of the two T-shirts are available at: http://www.80-20initiative.net/tshirts.html , if you want to view them. The pictures will be deleted in a week.]

APA youths began e-mailing 80-20 on Wednesday
asking 80-20 to take action. 80-20 investigated the matter and decided
to take action. At 10:50 a.m. this morning (Thursday), 80-20 president
S. B. Woo called A&F Chairman and CEO Michael Jeffries. Mr. Jefferies
was out of his office, so Woo left a message expressing the wish for A&F
to withdraw the products. He also requested a call back. About
two hours later, at 1:12 p.m., Mr. Seth Johnson, an executive with A&F
called back. He said that he was calling on behalf of Mr. Jeffries
who was not in town. He said that the products have been pulled off
the market, emphasizing however that the T-shirts were meant to add humor,
without intending to offend anyone. A&F is issuing a press release
to the Associated Press regarding the withdrawal of the T-shirts.

A New Immigration Bill May Shortchange You

Do you have elderly parents living abroad? If so, you need to pay keen attention to this 80-20 message.

For many working APAs whose parents live abroad, a lengthy visit by their parents every few years is the only viable option for FAMILY UNION.

That option will no longer be available to you in the NEW immigration policy. In the past such a visa was for "a minimum of 6 months." Now it will normally be for 30 days only. See http://www.ins.gov/graphics/publicaffairs/newsrels/visa.htm

The proposed new immigration policy aims to deter terrorism. Many are thoughtful provisions. However, some changes may be flawed. Hence, our Immigration and Naturalization Service (INS) and the Sate Department are requesting public comments on the proposed changes until May 6. To comment on the proposed changes, you need to provide a reference number (INS no. 2176-01), if you are communicating with the INS. There are several ways:

How "Internment" relates to us today

INTERNMENT RE-ENACTMENT TO TEACH HISTORICAL LESSON

.... On April 27, East Beach Street in Watsonville will look like a movie set, with vintage costumes, sedans and a police car -- even a Greyhound bus built six decades ago. The Mello Center for the Performing Arts will be turned into an internment camp replete with uniformed guards in watchtowers.

It was on April 27, 1942, that more than 1,100 Santa Cruz County residents -- among 120,000 people of Japanese ancestry on the West Coast -- were ordered to report to the veterans hall to be bused to the Salinas Assembly Center at the California Rodeo Grounds. They were then taken to a desolate desert camp in Poston, Ariz., where most lived out the war years behind barbed wire. The last train from Salinas left on the Fourth of July. .....

"It's taken Japanese-Americans more than 50 years to be able to do something like this,'' said Aptos historian Sandy Lydon, who has studied the internment for 35 years. "This is a sign of a mature, very self-assured community. It's not about laying out piles of guilt. It's about warning people how easily something like this can happen."

"And after the backlash against the Arab-American community after Sept. 11, it becomes even more poignant and relevant.'' ....

U.S. `had no choice'

Some local residents and U.S. veterans have griped that they're tired of hearing about the internment and would prefer to move on.

"Vet groups aren't too enthusiastic,'' said Jim Henegen, 67, first vice commander of Watsonville's American Legion post. ``America had no choice. We didn't know who was who.'' .....

Said Navy veteran Art Bailey, 78, of Watsonville: "At least we didn't line them up and kill them like they did our guys.'' ......

Contradiction seen

The well-known part of the story is that most Pajaro Valley residents did not want the Japanese and Japanese-Americans to return -- or even to participate in the U.S. military. Instead, they sent 15,000 telegrams to Congress to ask lawmakers to strip all people of Japanese ancestry of their American citizenship and "return'' them to Japan.

But, Hashimoto said, a lesser-known story is that a small minority of Pajaro Valley residents refused to go along. They spoke out against the internment in letters to the editor. They secretly stored the personal belongings in their attics. They argued -- years before the idea was popular -- that the internment was simply un-American.

Those residents -- attorneys such as John McCarthy, Phil Boyle and Stephen Wyckoff, as well as the Rev. Allan W. Geddes -- will be honored at the April 27 event. ......

The event also will tell the stories of local Japanese-American veterans who served in the U.S. Army's Military Intelligence Service and the 100th/42nd Regimental Combat Team, the most decorated unit in the U.S. Army's history.

The ceremony will close with a song from a choir of elderly Japanese and Japanese-American women: "God Bless America.'' (THE END)

Seattle Times' Second apology

Two days after 80-20 e-mail YOU and its other 410,000 supporters,
regarding Seattle Times' hurtful headline: "American outshines Kwan...",
Seattle Times issued its SECOND apology. It was drastically different in content, tone, style and length from its first apology.

Please circulate Mr. Fancher's article to our Caucasian friends, because
it will help to prevent the recurrence of similar events. A few excerpts
from his article follow:

It's a wonderful article. Its beginning reads like a direct reply

Seattle Times' FIRST apology was issued on 02/23. It was entitled:

The headline on our lead story about the gold-medal skating performance of Sarah Hughes was in two parts: a main headline, "Hughes good as gold" and a secondary headline, "American outshines Kwan, Slutskaya in skating surprise". Readers called to complain that the secondary headline implied that Michelle Kwan was not an American. While that was not intended--the writer was attempting to find another word for "Hughes" in order not to repeat her name in the second head--we apologize for any misunderstanding."

On 2/15/03 NAACP, the nation's largest Civil Rights org., passed
a resolution supporting APA orgs. calling for Coble's resignation.

SMART, Sikh Mediawatch and Resource Task Force, called for
Coble's apology and explanation.

3) Time Mag. To Publish A Letter from 80-20 Supporter:

At least one letter from 80-20 supporters regarding Coble's
outrageous comments will be published in Times' March 10, 2002

American outshines Kwan, Slutskaya ...

After the 1998 Winter Olympics figure skating finals, MSNBC
headlined: "American beats out Michelle Kwan."

Offended? Right. The reporter must apologize? Right.
It was an isolated incident that would never occur again? WRONG.

Just a few days ago, an almost IDENTICAL headline appeared. After the
figure skating finals of this year's Olympics, Seattle Times headlined
on February 22:

"Hughes good as gold

American outshines Kwan, Slutskaya in skating surprise"

To be sure, it was likely a subconscious mistake. The editor apologized
publicly the next day.

Don't take such Freudian slips lightly, however.
The perpetual foreigner image of APAs is a major cause for the glass ceiling
above YOU. That is the stuff that places hidden obstacles before
YOU AND YOUR CHILDREN in your daily lives.

80-20 is writing to the president of the American Journalist Association
to respectfully suggest that it organizes a work shop in its next annual
convention to address the "perpetual foreigner" image of APAs among its

Protecting APA Scientists

80-20 moves to protect APA scientists/engineers from
improper government investigative tactics. At its Board meeting
in San Francisco on Feb. 2, the Board unanimously adopted a
proactive resolution. Please forward this e-mail to your
friends & relatives who are scientists/engineers.

Whereas, remarkable similarities exist in the recent overaggressive,
perhaps wrongful, government investigative tactics against Asian
Pacific American (APA) scientists, namely Dr. Wen Ho Lee and
Dr. Bin Han, and possibly a few others,

Whereas, the common thread of the two celebrated cases are: grossly
exaggerated initial government charges against the scientists,
followed by press leaks, then verbal threats to the accused of the
dire consequences the scientists would face, then groundless
objection to letting the accused out on bail, and finally utter
failure to prove the case in court,

Whereas, we are confident that such abusive government investiga-
tive tactics is not a general practice of our great nation, and

Whereas, 80-20's principal goal is to win equal justice and equal
opportunity for APAs,

Be it, therefore, resolved that upon the application of an Asian
Pacific American scientist/engineer, upon adjudication in court of a
verdict vastly against the original charges, and upon the verifica-
tion by an ad hoc 80-20 investigative committee that the govern-
ment investigative tactics seem grossly improper and/or possibly
racist, 80-20 shall offer to support the wronged scientist/engineer
in asking for compensation in damages, including but not limited to
filing as a "Friend of the Court" (amicus curiae) and/or financial
aid. Furthermore, 80-20 will use its political assets and communica-
tion prowess to press for the censure of the wrongful investigators.

You may recall that in 4/2002, 80-20 adopted a proactive resolution
to protect our political candidates against racist attacks by their
opponents, after two reported racist attacks. That resolution proved
to be 100% successful in the general election of 2002.

It's just another demonstration of the effectiveness of GROUP
political clout that 80-20 provides.

How to fight back when being stepped on

Here is how. See how 80-20 single-handedly forced a political TV ad that fanned the fear of "yellow peril" off the air in one day!

On 10/27/00, at 9 a.m. EDT, 80-20 became aware of a New York Times article reporting that a conservative wing of the Republican Party was airing a TV ad in small towns in the Midwest (i.e. avoiding areas with significant APA population), fanning "yellow peril" in order to get people to vote for Bush.

By noon, an 80-20 e-mail was sent to our 230,000 supporters urging them to phone, fax and/or e-mail the headquarters of the Bush campaign and The National Republican Committee (RNC) to demand that they "PULL that ad MMEDIATELY." That e-mail is shown below as Attachment (a).

S.B. Woo, representing 80-20's Steering Committee, called Jim Nicholson, Chairman of RNC, without reaching him. S.B. left a message urging Nicholson to get the TV ad off the air immediately or face 80-20's wrath.

At the same time , 80-20 also e-mailed a list of 350 mainstream and ethnic reporters urging them to make inquiries to Bush and RNC headquarters asking how GOP could tolerate such a "hate" ad? Many reporters made similar inquiries.

A huge number of faxes, phone calls and e-mails from 80-20's supporters went into the Bush camp and RNC on the same day. Some posted a copy to S.B.; a selected few are shown below as Attachment (b). Read to appreciate the emotion and courage of their contents! No other APA or mainstream organizations had asked
for the Bush campaign to pull the TV ad off the air, to our best knowledge.

One day later, on 10/28/00, the Republican Party announced that it has persuaded that particular Republican group to pull the TV ad off the air, explaining that the reason for the withdraw was "to not hurt Bush's campaign".

Note that the reason for pulling off the ad was NOT that it was wrong, but "to not hurt Bush's campaign". 80-20 understands how politicians think. See attachment (a) to satisfy yourself on how 80-20 went straight to what would "hurt Bush's campaign" ­ asking APAs to spread the word and vote against Bush in the contested
states. That was what produced the result.

"Infamous Political Commercial Is Turned on Gore"

A remake of the "Daisy" commercial -- perhaps the most infamous of all political attack advertisements -- is being shown in several states today, but the target this time is Vice President Al Gore, not Barry Goldwater. The commercial contends that because the Clinton-Gore adminis tration "sold" the nation's security "to Communist Red China in exchange for campaign contributions," China has "the ability to threaten our homes with long-range nuclear warheads." It then shows a girl, counting down as she plucks daisy petals. Her counting is then replaced by a countdown of a missile, which is followed by a nuclear bomb explosion. "Don't take a chance. Please vote Republican," then appears on the screen.

The commercial is a copy of one that was made for President Lyndon Johnson in 1964. The commercial created such a furor -- with its tacit suggestion that Mr. Goldwater's views were so extreme that they would lead to nuclear annihilation -- that IT WAS WITHDRAWN AFTER APPEARING ONLY ONCE. But it has been remembered for decades.

A Texas-based nonprofit organization, Aretino Industries, paid for the new commercial, which will run in several closely contested states, including
Ohio, Michigan, Missouri, & Pennsylvania. Carey Cramer, a spokesman for the organization, in McAllen, Tex., declined to identify any of its members or the source of its money.

APA Heroism on September 11th

New York State Governor George E. Pataki talked about 14 heroes
in his January 9, "2002 State of the State Address." Two of the 14
heroes were APAs, when our population in NY is only 6%. See: http://www.state.ny.us/sos2002text.html

Being conspicuous in patriotism is the APA image that 80-20 wants to
help convey to the mainstream society. That is the best way to erase
the "perpetual foreigners" image.

Do you recall that 80-20 featured Zhe Zeng in a post-9/11 e-mail? It was based on an article published in the Chinese-language World Journal, translated into English by Charlie Sie of Los Angeles.

80-20 spread it to the APA community and pushed it to the main- stream
media. N.Y. Times followed up and did an article entitled "ZHE ZENG
-- Completely Selfless Person." Now Governor Pataki has picked
up the same theme.

That is how the image of a person or a community is changed.

Here is what Gov. Pataki said about Zhe Zack Zeng.

"Zack Zeng -- a 29-year-old employee at the Bank of New York
-- emigrated to America from mainland China as a teenager. He worked his way through the University of Rochester, built a promising career in business and became an EMT to help his neighbors. He was living the American Dream.

Zack wasn't at the World Trade Center on the morning of September
11th. But he knew that his emergency training could save lives. So he ran
toward the danger and confusion. He was last seen on television caring
for others. He died an American hero."

Gov. Pataki also featured police office David Lim.

"Thanks to Port Authority Police Officer David Lim, hundreds of people
who were trapped in a smoky stairwell are alive today. By urging them to
continue downward rather than switching stairwells, he led them to safety just moments before the North Tower collapsed. He was trapped in the rubble for nearly five hours before being rescued. "

......

"We are joined today by these heroes and the family members of
those who died. Zack Zeng's mother is proud that we are honoring her son. Unfortunately, she couldn't be here. But we are joined by Anne and Michael Angelini. I know that nothing any of us say can ease your pain. Your loss, the loss of one father, one son, two heroes, was a tragedy no one should have to suffer. But I hope this day reminds you that this state and this nation continue to stand beside you during this difficult chapter of your lives."
