meekly walk away. While such reactions to perceived affronts were well-
intentioned, their lack of persistence to follow up had unexpected
consequences. Such practice had formed a very negative impression in
the institutional memory of both the Democratic and Republican
parties and the mainstream media. That was one reason why our
community's voice and/or interests were often ignored by those three
important institutions of America.

Act When You Still Have Time
YOU and 80-20 NEED each other. Don't believe it? Read on.
21 members of U. S. House of Representatives introduced a
resolution for a boycott of this year's Paris Air Show. Others wanted to
boycott Grey Poupon mustard, Michelin tires, and anything else made
in France . Restaurants replaced French fries on their menus with
"Freedom fries."
All that anger for what? Simply because France refused to support
us in a Security Council resolution on Iraq? Hasn't France been a long-
time ally? Aren't French people also of European origin? Is there any
fear that France will ever wage war against us?
Ponder the above a minute, and ask yourself what will happen if,
God forbid, we go to war against an Asian nation** ?
What kind of reaction will come from politicians then? Much
stronger? Will the number of sponsors be 21 or 210 or 450 at that time?
Think about what will happen to the Asian Americans who have
traded, or visited, or done services for that "enemy nation!" Will they
be examined under a microscope and scrutinized under dire conditions?
Will they be place in internment camps? Read a Washington Post
article about the fears of Arab Americans, not just the Iraqi Ams ***.
Get involved, while there is still time.
The only way you can protect yourselves politically is to form a
powerful political voice that can affect the next election. Politicians
care most about winning the next election. When they sense that WE
could make them win or lose the next election, they will begin to
address our rightful concerns.

Becoming American"-- a LESSON for All Asian Ams.
After watching "Becoming American," a supporter e-mailed asking
what "if early Chinese Americans had behaved differently"?
Mr. Wan referred to "Chinese Americans." However, the discussion
is relevant to all Asian Americans. See below.

astute. We cannot live in our shells, ignoring what
is going on around us.
I have been reading about the history of Chinese
Americans. I am convinced that had early Chinese
Americans behaved differently, history may have been
different. Racial discrimination has many elements,
not only the color of one's skin. ....
Unfortunately, I still see the inward-looking attitude
of present-day Chinese in America. It seems they are
content to live in a China in the US, without trying
to learn the dynamics, people, and politics of this land.

A Tale of Two New Immigrant Groups � Irish & Chinese
The Irish and the Chinese came to American in large numbers at about
the same time, around the 1850s. At first, both were blatantly
discriminated and exploited in workplaces.
The Irish used the political process to seek equal opportunity.
That is, they applied their community's money and votes in a bloc to
reward politicians who cared for them, or punish those who didn't.
Soon, the power of the government was used by politicians, who sought
Irish votes, to prosecute discrimination against the Irish. Good jobs
opened to the Irish. They became an equal partner in the making of
the American Dream.
The Chinese, owing to language & cultural barriers, used the court
process instead of politics to fight discrimination. They didn't want to
change their citizenship while they could prior to the Chinese Exclusion
Act, because they didn't knowing the importance of group political
clout for a minority in a democracy. Even after they became eligible for
citizenship they stayed away from politics.
The difference in consequences is painful and heartbreaking. The
Chinese emphasized so much about living for their children. But they
failed to realize that for their own children's sake, they needed to
establish Group Political Clout.
What about this generation of Asian Americans?
Most of us are highly educated and do not have language difficulties.
However, the failure to appreciate the importance of Group
Political Clout to our children's future remains. Consequently, so does
the glass ceiling, except for that in the federal government,
which 80-20 helped to shatter via the 2000 presidential
election.

People, especially politicians, welcome or reject immigrants
according to their own needs. That's why the Gov. of CA, Leland
Stanford, flip-flopped repeatedly regarding Chinese immigrants. First,
when there was resentment against cheap Chinese labor, he voiced
"yellow peril." When he headed the "Railroad to the East" project, he
employed cheap Chinese railroad workers en masse & honored their
high achievements. When the political wind shifted again, he
voted for the "Chinese Exclusion Act," as a US senator from CA.
"Democracy is the worst form of government until compared with
all others," said Winston Churchill. I agree 100%. Part I, however,
showed an ugly part of democracy. Getting power and votes drove
politicians to advocate the "Chinese Exclusion Act." Ideals and reasons
be damned.
Lesson: All minorities, especially the new immigrants, must find
their own powerful ways to "reward or punish" politicians in order to
balance mass hysteria when it comes, as during the "Chinese Exclusion
Act." Otherwise, our interest will be ignored. To most politicians,
winning the next election is what counts. Past service to America or to a
politician by a group or an individual, personal relations, reasoning, ...,
etc. unfortunately don't count very much.

microcosm of immigrants' experiences in America. It applies

Part 1 illuminates the experience of early Chinese immigrants --
taking on jobs considered undesirable by American males. The Irish
had the same experience. For example, in the 1860s, Irish and Chinese
made up the bulk of railway workers.
Part 2 records the repercussion against the existence of "cheap
immigrant labor," especially in hard times and in areas where the
immigrants congregated. For the Chinese it was San Francisco. For
Irish, it was Boston. "No Irish Need Apply" was blatantly displayed
in newspaper ad in Boston.
Part 3 records the major improvement for Chinese as a result of
America's political needs. PBS stated: "At war with Japan, China
became an American ally. Chinese Americans found themselves
suddenly embraced by America's political establishment, and the
exclusion laws were quickly repealed. Chinese men and women moved
into factory jobs, the military service and other arenas formerly closed
to them."
Similarly, Irish won better opportunity in workplaces through
politics. The Irish became highly politically organized. Boston became
a political base. The fabled "Irish Mafia" in politics later propelled
John F. Kennedy into the Presidency in 1960.
As you watch the 3-part series, see if you would agree with 2
observations offered by 80-20:
(1) San Francisco and Boston were respectively locations where
repression against Chinese and Irish were the strongest. However, the
same two cities become the source of political power for Chinese Ams.

(2) The level of YOUR achievement is linked to politics.
The bigger the group political clout the more individuals in that group
will be allowed to live to the maximum of their potential. Ponder a
moment the dramatic increase in the level of achievement of women,

truth. There are still glass ceilings above us. Please do your share to
help build our group political clout.

Victory IV
1) Exceeding our Goal -- 7491 signed instead of 6000:
In one month, 7,491 have signed the petition to the Republican
leadership requesting their help to induce Rep. Coble to apologize and
resign as Chair of the Homeland Security Subcomm. We aimed for 6,000

Party affiliations of signers are as seen below. The numbers don't
add up to the 7491, because some signers left party affiliation unfilled.
Independent: 2733; Republican: 869; Democrat: 2349; Others: 971
2) More Heat on Coble:
When Sen. John Edwards, a Dem. presidential candidate, spoke up
against Rep. Coble who is from the same state of North Carolina,
another NC Republican Rep. Richard Burr criticized Sen. Edwards for not
being loyal to a fellow N. Carolinian.
This got Sen. John Kerry, another Dem. president candidate, to work
in another shot at Rep. Coble. Kerry said:
"It's discouraging to see that Richard Burr believes that to be loyal
to North Carolina you have to remain silent about Howard Coble's
indefensible remarks. ... I proudly stand by what I said two weeks ago.
Howard Coble's suggestion that the internment of Japanese
Americans was necessary for our national security takes us backwards
and calls into serious question not just his judgment, but his ability
to serve as Chairman of the newly organized House Subcommittee on
Homeland Security."
3) Republican Leaders Criticized for "Selective Outrage":
Last week, Dem. Rep. Jim Moran made insensitive statements about
the Jewish Ams. He apologized and lost his post as one of the 24
Regional managers of the Dem. House Caucus. Prior to that GOP Leaders
criticized Moran severely. A CNN commentary observed:
"White House spokesman Ari Fleischer called Moran's words
"shocking," while House Majority Leader Tom DeLay, R-Texas, not
surprisingly found Moran's comments "very damaging."
Both Fleischer and DeLay stand accused of selective outrage.
Neither man uttered a critical word about Rep. Howard Coble, R-North
Carolina, who publicly stated recently that the internment of
Japanese Americans during WW II was the appropriate thing to do."

When Sen. John Edwards, a Dem. presidential candidate, spoke up
against Rep. Coble who is from the same state of North Carolina,
another NC Republican Rep. Richard Burr criticized Sen. Edwards for not
being loyal to a fellow N. Carolinian.
This got Sen. John Kerry, another Dem. president candidate, to work
in another shot at Rep. Coble. Kerry said:
"It's discouraging to see that Richard Burr believes that to be loyal
to North Carolina you have to remain silent about Howard Coble's
indefensible remarks. ... I proudly stand by what I said two weeks ago.
Howard Coble's suggestion that the internment of Japanese
Americans was necessary for our national security takes us backwards
and calls into serious question not just his judgment, but his ability
to serve as Chairman of the newly organized House Subcommittee on
Homeland Security."
3) Republican Leaders Criticized for "Selective Outrage":
Last week, Dem. Rep. Jim Moran made insensitive statements about
the Jewish Ams. He apologized and lost his post as one of the 24
Regional managers of the Dem. House Caucus. Prior to that GOP Leaders
criticized Moran severely. A CNN commentary observed:
"White House spokesman Ari Fleischer called Moran's words
"shocking," while House Majority Leader Tom DeLay, R-Texas, not
surprisingly found Moran's comments "very damaging."
Both Fleischer and DeLay stand accused of selective outrage.
Neither man uttered a critical word about Rep. Howard Coble, R-North
Carolina, who publicly stated recently that the internment of
Japanese Americans during WW II was the appropriate thing to do."

Who suspect Discrimination In The Workplace *****
1) WHAT IS THE FIRST STEP IF YOU SUSPECT DISCRIMINATION
AGAINST YOU BASED ON NATIONAL ORIGIN OR RACE?
If you suspect that, your first step should be to file a complaint
with the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC). You can
file a complaint by contacting your local EEOC office in person, by
phone, or by mail. Such a list can be found at:
http://www.eeoc.gov/teledir.html . You may call toll free at: 800-669-
4000 for more information if a field office is not close to where you live.
However, charges must be filed within 180 days of the discriminatory
act. You can find more information on the EEOC web site at:
http://www.eeoc.gov/qs-employees.html . If you can afford it, you may
also contact a lawyer to guide you through the EEOC process. See the
next question, if you need help in finding a lawyer.
2) HOW TO FIND A LAWYER, IF EEOC AGREES WITH YOU?
If the EEOC deems that your complaint can be subject for a
lawsuit, then you may want to file a private or class-action lawsuit. In
that case, you will want to find an attorney who can assist you on a
contingency basis, which means he will only collect a fee if he wins a
settlement or a case in court. When you win the case, you may be
awarded both compensatory damage and punitive damage. The
amount of compensatory damage is normally not large. It may
include the salaries you've lost and the lawyer's fees. The amount of
the punitive damage could be very large, if the discrimination is
blatant and malicious. A lawyer working on a contingency basis,
normally takes one third of the award.
A list of Asian American lawyers can be found at the NAPABA
(National Asian Pacific American Bar Association) web site,
www.napaba.org if you join as a member. Or you can use the law
directory on http://directory.findlaw.com/ for free. Pro Bono services
can be found at: http://www.abanet.org/legalservices/probono/home.html
Often you may need a lawyer who is familiar with the laws of
your state or locality. You can look up the yellow pages in your
telephone book, under "lawyer." There will be hundreds of names
there. Don't be fazed by that. Look for those lawyers who have ads in
the yellow page that specifically list discrimination as one of their
preferred areas of practice. You'll find out that the number of such
lawyers is quite small. Call some of them to find out if they'll handle
your case on a contingency basis. Tell them that you've already
contacted EEOC, and that it deems that you may have a valid case.
Most lawyers do not take a case on contingency basis unless EEOC has
already done the first layer of screening.
WILL LIFE BE EASIER IF IT IS A CLASS ACTION SUIT?
Most lawyer are more willing to take a case, if you have a
"CLASS ACTION" suit. A class action suit requires a minimum of 15
plaintiffs. If you have many colleagues who have been laid off on
suspected "racial or national-origin grounds," then you have a much
stronger case. You will also be subject to a lot less personal scrutiny

15 persons to form a class action suit, it will definitely be worth your

CALL TO ACTION II!
Both Time and Newsweek quoted Rep. Coble in their latest issue!!!
Newsweek, p.25, "Perspectives":
" 'We were at war. They were an endangered species.'

The reports by both magazines were completely neutral. What
does it mean to Asian Pacific Americans?
If NO one writes in to the two magazines to point out the
fallacy of Coble's logic and his mistaken historical facts, Coble has

THANKS TO YOU, we've achieved the first step. On Feb. 8, Associated Press reported: "U.S. Rep. Howard Coble said he won't apologize for comments ..." At about 4 p.m.Feb. 10, Rep. Coble apparently changed his mind and issued his "apology." See end of this e-mail.

CALL TO ACTION!
In times of uncertainty, fear, economic turndown, and/or war,
people in general, politicians in particular, seek to scapegoat.
Minorities are usually the targets. That happened in WWII. Jews
were slaughtered in Germany. Japanese Americans were interned
-- a form of imprisonment, though not comparable to the Holocaust.
Politicians are scapegoating again. Two months ago, Sen. Lott
reminisced segregation. A few days ago, Rep. Howard Coble,
Republican, NC, said that he agreed with the internment of
Japanese Americans.
Coble said, "We were at war. They (Japanese Americans) were an
endangered species. For many of these Japanese Americans, it wasn't
safe for them to be on the street. ... Some probably were intent on
doing harm to us ...."
Truth or a lie? Let's see what a blue-ribbon government
commission** had to say in 1983:
"In sum, Executive Order 9066 (Pres. F.D. Roosevelt's order to
intern) was not justified by military necessity .... The broad
historical causes that shaped these decisions were race
prejudice, war hysteria, and a failure of political leadership."
In fact, Coble's comment was spurred by a radio show caller, who
pushed for interning Arab Americans. Coble disagreed with that caller
because the U.S. isn't being attacked by "a sovereign nation." The
chilling implication is that he thinks internment may be ok if our
country is being attacked.
Can you be sure that only Arab Americans are in trouble? Could it
one day be Chinese Americans, Korean Ams., Pakistani or Indonesian
Ams. depending on where our nation is having conflicts? Rep. Coble
has power in a critical position. He is the Chairman of the Crime,
Terrorism and Homeland Security Subcommittee.
Mind you, politicians scapegoat AND fly trial balloons. If
YOU sit back & do nothing, who knows what may happen.

Good News for Our Community
(1) Gov. Gary Locke will give the rebuttal on behalf of the Democratic
Party to Pres. Bush's State of the Union address on 1/28. An APA has
never had this honor before!
(2) "USA Today" reported that the minimum length of admission
for B-2 non-immigrants visits would probably be extended to
3 months from the 1 month that was proposed after "9/11"!
Parents of many APA immigrants use this visa to visit their children
and have a lengthy stay in the USA. 80-20 was the organization that
provided you with the e-mail and postal addresses of INS and other
relevant branches of our government so that your voice can be heard in

(2) "USA Today" reported that the minimum length of admission
for B-2 non-immigrants visits would probably be extended to
3 months from the 1 month that was proposed after "9/11"!

The Significance of Inducing Sen.Lott's Resignation
Why? Why did 80-20 help to induce Sen. Lott's resignation from the Majority Leader's position? Here is why.
(1) America has leaned significantly to the right since 9/11. Since 9/11, our country is much more strict in immigration policy, less pro-diversity, and shows less respect for civil rights and minority concerns. All of that might be temporarily necessary to counter terrorism. But 80-20 is not that sure. It reserves its judgment for now.
(2) Talks could lead to actions. If pro-segregationists statements could be made with impunity in the guise of today's anti-terrorism atmosphere, who knows if the "clock can't be turned back."
(3) Human nature is such that the weakest is the most vulnerable. The APA, being the smallest of minorities and therefore perhaps the weakest, will be the first to be discriminated against, should the majority, God forbid, decide to turn the clock back.
Given those 3 reasons, a politician who made pro-segregationist statements MUST BE PUNISHED severely, so that no other politicians will dare to try turning the clock back. That is why 80-20 decided to induce Sen. Lott's resignation.
Please be aware that no APA individuals, regardless of how wealthy and powerful, can effectively impact such an event. Only a group like 80-20, that has the group political clout to deliver a bloc vote to either party in the next presidential election, could induce the political will forcing Sen. Lott's resignation.
In inducing that result, 80-20 has protected you from gradual shift in political atmosphere detrimental to you and your children.

80-20's latest success is related to its last e-mail to you entitled "80-20 Calls for A New Vote on Senate Majority Leader." At 11 a.m. on that day, S. B. Woo faxed the Senate Republican leaders and Andrew Card requesting a re-vote for its majority leader. Only five hours later, at 4 p.m. the same day, the GOP Caucus announced
that it would conduct a re-vote, to be held on 1/6/03!
On Dec. 20th, Senator Lott has resigned as the majority leader.
Of course, 80-20 didn't induce all that all by itself. However, just as certain, it showed that 80-20 knew politics and timing, and made the APA voice, YOUR VOICE, count. In this episode, 80-20 aimed to use its political clout strategically to become "the feather that breaks the Camel's back." We succeeded.

80-20 Calls For a New Vote on Senate Majority Leader
80-20 today called for the Senate Republican Caucus to hold another vote on its majority leader. It urges YOU to do YOUR part to support that position.
The APA is the smallest minority, and therefore perhaps the most vulnerable. There are times that we must speak out to protect our interest. This is such a time, in light of Sen. Lott's repeated pro- segregationist statements.
As a result, 80-20 has issued a press release . S. B. Woo, President of 80-20, also faxed a letter to GOP Senator Don Nickles, the number two person in the GOP Caucus today. It supported Nickles' call for another vote on the majority leader. Copies were sent to other Senate leaders and the White House.
Beware, however, 80-20 is only as strong as you are. Its press release doesn't mean much unless you take the time to support its position. We urge you to fax(preferred) or e-mail the following leaders.

Then They Came for Me

Then they came to detain immigrants indefinitely solely upon the
certification of the Attorney General, and I didn't speak up because I
wasn't an immigrant.
Then they came to eavesdrop on suspects consulting with their
attorneys, and I didn't speak up because I wasn't a suspect.
Then they came to prosecute non-citizens before secret military
commissions, and I didn't speak up because I wasn't a non-citizen.
Then they came to enter homes and offices for unannounced "sneak
and peek" searches, and I didn't speak up because I had nothing to
hide.
Then they came to reinstate Cointelpro and resume the infiltration
and surveillance of domestic religious and political groups, and I
didn't speak up because I had stopped participating in any groups.
Then they came for anyone who objected to government policy
because it aided the terrorists and gave ammunition to America's
enemies, and I didn't speak up because ... I didn't speak up.
Then they came for me. By that time no one was left to speak up.

Our Shared Dream & Your Membership
It's Thanksgiving day. 'Tis the time to be thankful to our Life Members; to regular members whose membership expires on 12/31; to those who support our cause but who are not yet members. 80-20 needs you to renew or upgrade your membership, or join as new members.
Why does 80-20 need YOUR membership?
It's not because we need your money to make a living, since all leaders of 80-20 work as volunteers. We need you, because we want to REALIZE OUR SHARED DREAM -- building up our community's political clout to win equal opportunity for you and your children.
80-20 can do things for YOU that you yourself can not hope to get done, regardless of how much personal wealth and power you may possess. Certain things can be done by group political clout only.
Group political clout depends on numbers. We have 630,000 APA families on our e-mail list, which is very impressive. However, we have only 1600 dues-paying members which is embarrassingly small except for the fact that it was 80-20's first attempt at instituting a dues system.
Therefore, 80-20 must redouble its effort, while hoping that YOU will help personally.

Stopping Racist Attacks -- Unity Is Power
updated for 2004 election
You may recall that there were two racist attacks against APA candidates by their political opponents in the 2002 PRIMARY election. As a result, 80-20 announced a tough policy aiming to stop such attacks.
Resources were set aside. We mapped out tactics to punish such guilty politicians and their political consultants. S. B. Woo, 80-20 president announced:
"There is only one way to stop such attacks: when politicians and their consultants find out that a racist attack on any APA candidate anywhere in the nation means an invitation for 80-20 to come in and defeat them in either this or the next election."

Was the policy effective? Did similar racist attacks occur in this year's GENERAL election?
80-20 is proud to report to you that thus far its policy has proven to be 100% effective in the GENERAL election in 3 fronts:
First, The one and only candidate, Ralph Appezzato, who was explicitly named by 80-20 for alleged racist attacks on Alice Lai-Bitke in the PRIMARY election for an Alameda County Council seat, committed suicide recently. He and Alice were to have a run-off in the GENERAL election. Since he was deceased, Alice Lai-Bitke won easily by 71% to 29%.
Secondly and more importantly, no racist attacks on APA candidates were reported to 80-20 anywhere in the nation during the GENERAL election of 2002, except for one case.
Thirdly, even in that singular case where a Republican candidate, Karen Balderston, mounted a racist attack against her Democratic opponent, Swati Dandekar who is an Indian Am., in an Iowa House of Representative race, Balderston was immediately jettisoned by her own party. The Iowa GOP rejected Balderston by: (a) unlisting her from the Iowa GOP web site, and (b) yanking financial support and direct mailings assistance for her. In addition, the chair of the Iowa Republican party, Chuck Larson, said: "The recent statement by Karen Balderston is not acceptable and does not reflect the philosophy of the Republican Party or its leadership."
On election day, Dandekar won.
Since the 2000 election, the Republican Party has served APA interests well in two particular aspects. First, President Bush has appointed more APAs to significant federal level positions than President Clinton. Secondly, GOP's immediate rejection of its own candidate owing to her racist attack on an APA candidate was
exemplary. The Democratic Party may have some things to learn from the Republican Party in these aspects.
To induce both political parties to compete in serving the rightful interests of the APA community was the reason for 80-20's advocacy of a SWING BLOC VOTE. It seems to be working. UNITY IS POWER.

Vote This Comming Tuesday
Vote this coming Tuesday.
If every registered APA votes on that day, the national % of APA voters may just be reported as 3%. How come? Because the number of non-APA voters will drop off significantly in any off-election year. However, if we vote, then an above 2.5% participation will be reported as the historic 3%. Will that increase our political clout!
The Asian-American Village web site, perhaps the most popular commercial site designed exclusively for Asian Americans, has launched its election week series, "APAthy to Action." The title of the series is a take-off from a new book, entitled "Click on Democracy: The Internet's Power to Change Political Apathy to Civic Action."

A Giant Passed Away
Chang-Lin Tien, the principal founder of 80-20, former Chancellor of UC, Berkeley, passed away last night. Our community lost a pillar of strength. I lost a dear friend.
Chang-Lin has achieved highly. Yet he was willing to take risks on behalf of our community. He didn't care about protecting his own feathers. He cared about doing the right things. Such persons are rare in our community. I hope his death will motivate us to emulate him and try to fit into his huge shoes.

Chinese are not uninterested in politics. Thousands of years of palace
Intrigue have taught us to be very astute at it. However, the lesson
learned is not suitable for the modern US scene. Chinese learned
politics as a self-centered and individual-oriented art. What can my
contribution do for me and which politician I should become buddy
with? We have not learned that there are certain things only a group
can do. Politicians and emperors come and go. Selfish interest and
ambition do not protect our public good. My two cents worth of

community? I know many of my friends want to be more active than
passively following. Anything along this line would be good.

donated money to Torricelli or his party at some big convention
(forgot the details). Then T. wrote a rousing letter, which I read, to
Hsing supporting the cause of the plight of victims of Japanese
tyranny. It was at the height of our trying to push the Feinstein
bill. So I organized a group to go to Washington to drum up support
from the aides of some sympathetic members of Congress, & Torricelli
was on my list. I was surprised that I was able to get an appoint-
ment to see his chief of staff (she) so easily. When we got there, she
asked for the purpose of the visit. (I thought she understood it.) I
showed T.'s letter and the group showered her with book, pamphlets,
letters, package on Comfort Women. She read the letter and then
ponderously replied: "I don't know how committed Sen. T. is to
this." So we left with hopes of an ally.
What happened next was a big black hole. Lesson learned -- Some
politicians say things that people like to hear to get their money or
votes. So what else is new? JJ

Senator Torricelli/ David Chang/ Asia Gate
What can we learn from Senator Torricelli's downfall, David Chang's imprisonment, and the campaign finance scandal of 1997, that The New York Times christened "Asia Gate.?" Remember those days, when our entire community was tarnished for the misdeeds of a few?
80-20's conclusion is: Don't engage in illegal political activities. While that is obvious, there is also a subtler message: Gaining political clout is much more complicated than giving money to politicians, even when one were willing to do so illegally! David Chang of NJ, John Huang, Johnny Chung, Maria Hsia and Charlie Trie, ..., etc. all found that out the hard way.
Politics must be learned, like all other subjects. However, there is no book on how to gain political clout. Hence, those individuals in our community with political field experience (electoral politics, appointive politics, and political action committee experience) must be looked to for advice. Never again shall we follow those APAs with little political experience and little substance, but driven by blind ambition to seek political power and business profit.
If you believe that our community needs political clout, give your money to political organizations that have the experience and the track record of gaining political clout for you. Don't give money to politicians who don't share our rightful concerns.
Want to know how much money 80-20 has given to politicians in its 4.5 years? $500. $100 to each of 5 politicians in order to qualify as a multi-candidate political action committee, in accordance with Federal Election Commission requirements. But, look how much 80-20 had gotten done for our community, thanks to YOUR SUPPORT for a bloc vote and YOUR PAYMENT of membership dues.

John Huang raised $3,000,000 from our community for the Democratic Party. Result? Our community got trashed instead of gained political clout.

80-20's leaders are answerable to YOU only, not to politicians. Ponder that point a moment. You will know which ones deserve your financial backing. Thank you.

Update on 80-20's Political Actions
80-20's modus operanti is to reward politicians who share APAs' rightful concerns and punish those who don't. Since its inception, it has shown its effectiveness in many ways, including non-political events such as asking Abercrombie and Finch to withdraw its offensive t-shirts, and expressing our displeasure at Seattle Time's headlines on Michelle Kwan. Here is a report updating 80-20's effectiveness in political matters.
(a) At its inception, 80-20 sent in writing to both political parties, its aspiration to see an APA appointed to a cabinet office. That request has been honored by both President Clinton, a Democrat, and President Bush, a Republican.
(b) Since its inception, 80-20 has issued only one DIRECT political demand. It demanded that the Republican party withdraw an infamous "Daisy" TV ad. It was done the next day.
(c) Since its inception, 80-20 has endorsed only one candidate -- Gore. Although Gore didn't win, 80-20 delivered "more than 2 out of every 3 APA votes to Gore," according to a formal national poll, partially funded by the Nat'l Science Foundation. 80-20's success in delievering a bloc vote is now written up in not only articles but also a book "Click to Democracy: The Power of the Internet to Change Political Apathy into Action," which discusses how the CNN polls also show 80-20's success. The other was Ralph Appezzato, Mayor of Alameda, who made a racist attack on an APS candidate Alice Lai-Bitker in a party primary for supervisor in Alameda County.
Since our censure of Mr. Cox, he has(a) hired a person to handle public relations for him with the APA community, and (b) approached C-100, a well-known Ch. Am. organization, and asked for a meeting.
Mr. Ralph Appezzato, who was to be in a run-off with Bitker, unfortunately committed suicide on 9/16/02. While 80-20 censured Mr. Appezzato for his racist politics, and obviously meant to put pressure on him, it never intended to wish him ill in a personal sense. He was known to have prostate cancer. 80-20 shares the grief of his family.
What does all that prove? UNITY IS POWER.

The November election will be here soon. Two types of persons need to
register: (1) those who've never registered, and (2) having registered
but have moved to a new address.
Don't waste your political power. When we VOTE AS A BLOC, every

Here is the EASIEST WAY to register to vote! It will be the most
meaningful 10 minutes you'll spend in your life for your offspring.
Step-by-step instructions are given to help NEW IMMIGRANTS & people
who have NEVER registered before. All you need is your computer, a
printer and the adobe Acrobat software. If you don't have that
software, you will be given instructions to download it.

News on 80-20's Election

To encourage participation in its election, 80-20 tried hard to encourage female and non-Chinese American candidates. In addition, 80-20 will pose the following header on its web page where voting occurs:
"As you vote, please beware that diversity in ethnic background, gender and geographic distribution in 80-20's leadership will likely make 80-20 stronger. Please also note that 40% of Asian Americans reside in California, and that California is the state where our votes could make the largest impact on the outcome of presidential elections. "

A Role Model/ Paul Igasaki
(1) WHAT A ROLE MODEL
80-20 sponsored a contest for its members to help recruit new members. The winner of the contest would win a round trip, economy airfare ticket to Asia.
Susan Wu of Alabama won the contest with 9 recruits*. When she was offered the ticket, she wanted to donate it back to 80-20. When 80-20 replied and said, "Thanks, but you've earned it!" Susan Wu replied:
"I recruited 80-20 members because I believe it is our duty. I am only doing my part. My donation is from the bottom of my heart and I am sincere about my decision. "
Guess what? Susan Wu is only 70 years young. What a role model!
*If everyone of our 1600 members had done what she did, our membership would have increased to 14,400.
(2) Paul Igasaki -- VICE CHAIR & ACTING CHAIR OF EEOC JACL (Japanese Am. Citizens League) and OCA (Organization of Chinese Ams.) has each passed a resolution urging President Bush to re-appoint Paul Igasaki to the Equal Employment opportunity Commission (EEOC). A CHALLENGE to Our Best and Brightest
Will you run for an office in 80-20 in order to serve our community? There will be no pay, lots of work, lots of headache and some out of pocket expenses. That is 80-20's CHALLENGE to our best and brightest.
You may ask, why should I take this challenge? Here are two BIG reasons.
(1) Who gets cussed out the most in America, day after day?
Answer: The President of the USA, no matter who that person is. Statesmen have always known: "It's a privilege to serve. Criticism comes with the turf."
(2) Why would anyone be so masochistic?
It is because the best and brightest are steeled by a value
system, eloquently expressed by Theodore Roosevelt:"It's not the critic who counts; not he who describes how the mighty had allen; and how the doer of deeds could have done them better.
The credit goes to he who is actually in the arena; whose faced is marred with dust, sweat and blood; who tries valiantly; and who comes up short, time and again."
Our community needs you. 80-20 needs you.
There is no shame in wanting to serve and not getting elected.
There is only shame in not wanting to serve or not daring to run. Again quoting Theodore Roosevelt:
".. He (the one in the arena) is at least better than those timid souls who know neither defeat nor victory."

Mind you, however, that Group Political Clout depends on numbers. 80-20 already has an impressive e-mail list of 600,000 APA households and individuals. However, that e-mail list must be complemented by a fairly large number of dues-paying members to unleash its true prowess!!!

80-20 Rated Tops in the Nation
Three scholars of the Univ. of Syracuse will publish a book that rates 80-20 as one of the two most successful, perhaps even the most effective, cyberspace political organizations in the nation in the 2000 election season. The book's title is "Click on Democracy: The Power of the Internet to Change Political Apathy into Action" S. B. Woo, President of 80-20 , was invited to write a "Foreword" for the book, which will be published by a division of HarperCollins. Chapter 2 of the book states: ".. for a Woo- or Bogosian-style success story in 2004 or beyond .." By "Woo," the authors mean the 80-20 PAC, of which S. B. Woo is president. Bogosian, Joe is the head of Young Professionals for Bush, the other most effective cyberspace political org. The book devotes 1/3 of Chapter 8 to describing 80-20 and its successes.
The idea for this book came from Dean David Rubin of the S.I. Newhouse School of Public Communications, Syracuse University. He suggested to his faculty that the 2000 national election would be the first one in which the Internet could play an important part. He invited any faculty members interested in researching the internet's role to come up with a plan for the research, and possibly for writing a book.
Profs. Steve Davis, Larry Elin and Grant Reeher organized a research team of about 10 persons to monitor Internet efforts of political parties, traditional media, and other politically oriented groups. They rated 80-20 as perhaps the most successful cyberspace political organization in the 2000 election season in achieving its goals and creating SOCIAL CAPITAL. Social capital is the connection among individuals, giving rise to social networks, reciprocity and trustworthiness . This "capital" enhances general happiness, health, and the quality of participants' political life.
S. B. Woo said, "80-20 is greatly honored. 80-20 was only 3 years old when evaluated, and yet it was rated as one of nation's best two. To my knowledge, no other Asian American civic or political organizations have gotten that kind of attention -- selected for careful evaluation by prestigious mainstream organizations, twice in the last two years."
He continued, "The other assessment of 80-20's effectiveness was a national survey led by a group of professors from Utah, Harvard, Yale and Florida, and sponsored by The National Science Foundation. The national survey showed that APAs voted for Gore, as suggested by 80-20, 'by more than 2 to 1' in the 2000 election. The real message of the two evaluations is clear. Our community's political clout is winning respect from the mainstream society, and that 80-20 is a significant organization. The credit goes to all who support 80-20. Politics clout depends on numbers. 80-20 now has 600,000 supporters on its e-mail list."
