Yahoo & eBay Shut Down "Ghettopoly,"THANKS TO YOU!

Dear 80-20 supporters:

Thanks to you, who took your precious time to e-mail, &/or fax
&/or phone, both YAHOO & eBAY HAVE DECIDED TO SHUT DOWN
"GHETTOPOLY." It is another wonderful demonstration that "Together,
we shall overcome." For 80-20's other effective actions to enhance

Unfortunately, David Chang remains un-repentant. However, now
that he is facing the consequences, we hope that he would reflect upon
what he has done. For details please see below.

America "a more perfect Union." 80-20 shall continue to monitor sites
related to "Ghettopoly" for a while. We are also contacting the maker
of "monopoly" whose patent rights may have been violated, to ensure
the effective boycotting of "Ghettopoly."

Should we banned every single black comedian who makes jokes about
Asian Americans? Is Jay Leno a racist because he made a comment about Asian
people eating dogs? How about Dave Chappell, is he a racist too? Do
you think the puppets they use on Crank Yankers are stereotypical too? How
about Snoop dog, is his show on MTV racist too? What do you think when
Rappers rap about " Chink eyes"or "eyes slanted like " are they all
racist too. Or how Asians are portrayed in Black Movies. I think before you
pass judgment on my game, you should first see it. I am sorry that my last
name is of Asian decent, maybe if my last name is of Simmons, you would
not be so harsh. There is all ethnic groups in Ghettopoly. Including
Asian, Irish, Jewish, Hispanics, White, Italians, just like the real
Ghetto. Remember, the game is called Ghettopoly not Blackopoly. Look
up in the dictionary of the meaning of the word Satire.

I hope from this email that you know I am not a racist person but a
person who simply decided to make a game that is not boring. I am sick and
tire of Asians being treated as weaklings with no real voice in this
Country. If all Asian-Americans stood up and addressed injustices from all races
they have felt, then we wouldn't be the silent majority we are now. It
is so sad that when for once Asians finally gather enough courage to
speaks up and is against one of their own. Stop living in fear, no one if
better than you or tougher than you. Do a little research first

CALL FOR ACTION

80-20 stands with civil rights organizations in condemning the
"Ghettopoly" game. This game perpetrates harmful stereotypes against
African Americans, which is not a matter of humor, as the game
creator, David Chang, may suggest.

The game's stated objective is "to become the richest playa through
stealing, cheating and fencing stolen properties." Game pieces include a
cannabis leaf, crack cocaine, and a gun. Properties are not houses and
hotels as is the case in "Monopoly," but crack houses and public
housing projects. The object of the game is to build as many projects
and crack houses as possible while avoiding jail, car jacking, addiction
or death.

The game not only perpetuates massive stereotypes along racial lines, it
insults African American history - particularly Martin Luther King Jr.
and Malcolm X, who are both lambasted with insensitivity. For
example, "Martin Luthor King, Jr.," intentionally misspelled in the
game, is shown scratching his crotch and saying, "I have an itch." The
game also plays on Asian American stereotypes with an Asian brothel
as one of the spaces on the board.

This game is not meant for people to "laugh at themselves," as David
Chang, said. At a price of $32 a game, it can hardly be said to be
targeted at the ghetto demographic. It pokes fun at poverty, at crime,
at black history and at living in city slums.

David Chang immigrated to America from Taiwan when he was 8. His
father owned a Chinese restaurant. He is a graduate of the Univ. of
Rochester, and lives in PA. It is embarrassing that an Asian American,
who probably himself has experienced a lot of stereotypes is now the
creator of a such game perpetrating stereotypes against another
community.

Giving $ to Politicians is NOT Always Good

The campaign season has started. Let's learn a lesson from the
"campaign finance scandal" of 1996, which the NY Times termed "The
Asia Gate."

APAs gave about $4,000,000 to the Democratic Party, and
probably the same or more to GOP. IN RETURN, WE GOT TRASHED.
Let's review the facts:

A] From 1996-98, the image of our entire community was tarnished
for the misdeeds of a few. Our image as the "perpetual foreigners"
whose loyalty to America is questionable was greatly enforced.

B] After the scandal attracted media attention, Democrats &
Republicans competed to distance themselves from ALL Asian
Americans. They took $8 million from us; they should at least have
spoken up and pointed out that the misdeeds were done by about a
dozen corrupt APAs ONLY. Where were our community's fundraising
leaders, when we needed their political connections to get the
politicians to speak on our behalf?

Let's learn the lesson. Before giving generously to political
leaders, ask them what they will do for the APA community in return.
If their answers sound good, ask them to do some of the deeds for us
NOW. Otherwise, most'll simply take your money and forget you.

We still have glass ceilings above us and our children. We still
don't enjoy equal justice if you'll remember the Wen Ho Lee case.
Measure what you have given financially to 80-20 and what it has
done for our community and what you are planning to give to the
presidential candidates and what they have or will do for our
community.

Above all, spread words about "THE FOUR DON'TS" listed below:

DON'T give thousands of dollars just to get a picture with a
presidential candidate. Are we that shallow?
DON'T raise hundreds of thousands of dollars for a politician just
because the politician has flattered you. Are we that naive?
DON'T help those APA fundraisers who are always the FIRST to
organize fundraisers for politicians and the LAST to stand up to fight
for our community. Are we that forgetful or dumb or self-centered?
DON'T give illegally !!! This is USA!

Students -- Our Future Leaders

(A) Student membership, with full rights & privileges, is initiated

(B) Tien Chang-Lin Student Internship

80-20 instituted the Internship this past summer. If interested,

(C) Sherry Zhang, A Tien Chang-Lin Summer Intern in 2003

Sherry Zhang was 16 and the only intern who is still in high
school. She was on Voice of America twice and on A.M. 1300 radio
station of Los Angeles for about 30 minutes as our intern. She
recruited more members than 80-20 had expected, including one Life
Member. She returned 80% of her stipend back to 80-20, in spite of
80-20's repeated request for her NOT to do so.

Her last act as an intern was to VOLUNTARILY write out her intern
experience for the benefit of our next summer's intern. Why? She was
planning ahead for 80-20. She so cares for 80-20 to succeed, perhaps
because she learned from her internship how much our community
needs political awakening.

1. A Strong Will Is Important

I considered quitting the internship several times.

When I applied, I thought as the chief-in-editor of the newspaper
of my Chinese school, 3500 families (about 10,000 people) had heard
my name for years, so it wouldn't be difficult for me to achieve my
intern goal. However, after I sent emails to the 14 branch school
principals, only one school was willing to mention 80/20 to their
school list. Since the schools were restricted from participating in
political activities, I could not get an email list from them. My action
plan was ruined and I had to start from scratch. On my first day of
recruiting at Chinese school, three close friends of mine said "No, NO,
and NO to me. One couple I sat down with started screaming and
cursing at me. They made me cry because I had not been treated that
way for 16 years of my life. I considered quitting then. ......

These types of situations made me consider quitting the
internship. I would be ashamed if I quit. ....... I repeatedly said to
myself, "I will reach that goal." I should not break my promise. That's
my will."

..... This internship taught me to believe in hard work and
determination, but more importantly, I've seen just how important it
is to have great friends who believe in you. I'll be hosting a family
party at the end of this month to thank all my recruits. ..."

S. B. Woo's reaction after first reading Sherry's essay:
All of a sudden I felt 20 years younger. My face was
flushed & my heart full of hope. The APA community is
the LAST best in political clout among minorities. We,
therefore, need future political leaders who will be the
best, the brightest AND THE TOUGHEST.

Gov. Dean & 2 Precedents Empowering Our Community

80-20 is proud to report that, thanks to YOU, it has set two
precedents helping to empower the APA community politically
. Both
precedents were established this past weekend at 80-20's Luncheon in
Los Angeles in which Gov. Howard Dean was the keynote speaker.

(1) The Leading Democratic Presidential Candidate Keynoted
An 80-20 Fundraiser.


APAs raising funds for a presidential candidates is common. A
presidential candidates keynoting an APA fundraiser is
news. However, the latter is common in the mainstream
society. Therefore, inducing the same to happen in the APA
community is politically empowering.

(2) Governor Grey Davis of California Requested To Attend The
80-20 VIP Reception


APA organizations requesting the presence of the Governor at their
events is common. The Governor initiating a request to
drop by an APA event is news. To be sure Governor Davis'
request is possibly related to the pending "Recall" election in CA.
Nevertheless, Governor Davis would not have made the request, if
he didn't think that 80-20's event was significant.

Besides setting good political precedents, 80-20's fundraiser was
well attended. 300 plus people packed into a ballroom decorated
with a patriotic theme. Everything was in red, white and blue. A huge
crowd of ethnic and mainstream reporters followed Govs. Dean and
Davis when they arrived at the VIP Reception room. Camera were
flashing, The bright lights of TV cameras lit up half of the room. It
was a big morale booster for 80-20 supporters and it increased our war
chest for the presidential election next year.

Gov. Dean got a standing ovation before and after his speech.
Our supporters appreciated Gov. Dean's outreach to us that set a
wonderful precedent. He gave his usual campaign speech.
Afterwards, while interviewed by an ethnic TV crew he said, "Should I
be someone 80-20 would like to help, I would be very helpful to
80-20 because we would love to have your votes.
" In the next few
months, 80-20 will be seeking the views of all presidential candidates on
key APA issues, including those of the Gov. Dean and President Bush.

Why is 80-20's LA Event Significant?

Many APA individuals and organizations have done fundraisers for
presidential candidates. This event is the opposite. A presidential
candidate, perhaps the leading candidate, comes to an event where an
APA organization holds, not an annual convention, but a fundraiser.

It is significant for 2 major reasons.

First, it affirms 80-20's strong faith that if we, the APAs, get our acts
together, our political system will respond. When we have political
clout, we can win equal justice and equal opportunity in workplaces for
us and our children.

Second, Gov. Howard Dean, perhaps the leading Democratic presidential
candidate, by chartering a plane to come to LA just to make the 80-20
event is warmly reaching out to the APA community.

Talking about reaching out, we regret to inform you that President Bush
will not be coming. 80-20 appreciates the courtesy and careful
consideration extended to it by the White House scheduling office. All
of that may also be a sign of our community's growing clout.

The following wonderful individuals helped greatly. As a
result, 290 of the 300 tickets have been reserved. Every major
component of the APA community has at least one table at the event.

Lots of Good News

1) Record Number of Dues-Paying Members:

1661 members and growing ! That is 61 or 4% more then last year's
1600 members. 80-20 anticipates a 20% increase ANNUALLY. That
hefty annual increase and a 650,000 address e-mailing list will mean
Group Political Clout for OUR community.

2) Tickets for the LA Event About To Be Sold Out:

260 of the 300 tickets for 80-20's 9/6 Historic Luncheon in Los
Angles have been reserved.

So many prestigious individuals have committed to be Co-Chairs,
Honorary Chairs and The Chairman of the event. Their names will
soon be announced in a press release.

3) 80-20's Intern To Be On Voice of America Again

Sherry Zhang, one of our Tien Chang-Lin summer interns whose
interview with VOA was broadcast live to China on 6/11, will be
interviewed again by VOA on 8/20.

She has recruited 34 members including one Life Member in one
month exceeding the target set for interns. In addition she wants to
give 80% of her pay back so that 80-20 may in the future invite more
"Asian American youth to gain the invaluable experience." Sherry is a
ROLE MODEL for not only our youth but also for all of us. In her we
find the combination of the best of Chinese and American culture.

Q & A on 80-20

1) WHAT IS 80-20 ALL ABOUT?

80-20 is a political action committee, PAC. It advocate using a
SWING bloc vote to win equality for Asian Pacific Americans, APAs. As
A PAC, 80-20 is legally permitted to either support or oppose political
candidates. Tax exempt organizations are NOT.

Two independent evaluations verified 80-20's political clout. One
was a nat'l poll on how APAs voted in the 2000 election sponsored by

candidates. Each office has a term limit.

A Salute to Governor Gary Locke

80-20 salutes Governor Gary Locke of the State of Washington who
announced yesterday that he would not seek a third term as
governor. His second term will end in January 2005.

Gary is the first Asian American to be elected governor in the
continental USA. He was the chair of the Democratic
Governors Association,. He also represented the Democratic Party in
commenting on President Bush’s State of the Union speech in 2003.

80-20 salutes this role model and trusts that our community will
continue to hear from him politically and through service to the APA
community.

political organizations in the 2000 election by a recent book: "Click
on Democracy -- The Internet's Power to Change Political Apathy

Be Passionate About 4th of JULY

We are less than a week from one of the most important Holidays of our
Nation, so it is time to remember ...

4TH OF JULY

Have you ever wondered what happened to the 56 men who signed
the Declaration of Independence?

Five signers were captured by the British as traitors, and tortured
before they died.

Twelve had their homes ransacked and burned. Two lost their sons serving
in the Revolutionary Army; another had two sons captured.

Nine of the 56 fought and died from wounds or hardships of the
Revolutionary War.

They signed and they pledged their lives, their fortunes, and their
sacred honor.

What kind of men were they?

Twenty four were lawyers and jurists. Eleven were merchants, nine were
farmers and large plantation owners; men of means, well educated, but
they signed the Declaration of Independence knowing full well that the
penalty would be death if they were captured.

Carter Braxton of Virginia, a wealthy planter and trader, saw his Ships
swept from the seas by the British Navy. He sold his home and properties
to pay his debts, and died in rags.

Thomas McKeam was so hounded by the British that he was forced to move
his family almost constantly. He served in the Congress without pay, &
his family was kept in hiding. His possessions were taken from him, &
poverty was his reward.

Vandals or soldiers looted the properties of Dillery, Hall, Clymer,
Walton, Gwinnett, Heyward, Ruttledge, and Middleton.

At the battle of Yorktown, Thomas Nelson, Jr., noted that the British
General Cornwallis had taken over the Nelson home for his headquarters.

He quietly urged General George Washington to open fire. The home was
destroyed, and Nelson died bankrupt.

Francis Lewis had his home and properties destroyed. The enemy jailed
his wife, and she died within a few months.

John Hart was driven from his wife's bedside as she was dying. Their
13 children fled for their lives. His fields and his gristmill were laid
to waste. For more than a year he lived in forests and caves, returning
home to find his wife dead and his children vanished. Some of us take
these liberties so much for granted, but we shouldn't.

So, take a few minutes while enjoying your 4th of July holiday and
silently thank these patriots. It's not much to ask for the price they
paid.

Remember: freedom is never free!

Victory VII & Other Good News

A) Victory VII & Salute to APILC, Asian Pacific Islander Legislative
Caucus of California (Co-Chairs: Assemblymembers Wilma Chan &
Carol Liu
; Members: Assemblymembers Judy Chu, George
Nakano, & Leland Yee
)

The California Senate voted unanimously on June 2 to condemn
remarks by Congressman Howard Coble (R-N.C.) regarding the
Japanese American internment and called for him to resign as chair
of the House Sub-committee on Homeland Security. The resolution
was introduced by APILC. The California Assembly took the same
action about 2 weeks earlier.

A copy of the resolution will now be sent to every member of Congress
and every member of North Carolina's Legislature and the Governor.

B) Good News -- GOP Leaders Are Dropping 80-20's Name In
Press Conference

80-20 didn't get much respect from GOP in the 2000 presidential
election. However, things seem to be changing. John Tsu who will
chair the "Asian Am. & Pacific Islanders for Bush/Cheney 2004" stated
during the press conference announcing its formation that 80-20
might join this campaign organization after 80-20's Endorsement
Convention.

While the statement is technically true, it is not news. 80-20 is just as
likely to support the Democratic presidential nominee after 80-20's
Endorsement Convention. The nominee of the major political party
that has performed more good deeds for our community in the
preceding 4 years gets 80-20's endorsement.

What is news is that Prof. Tsu, by working in 80-20's name in the press
conference, is recognizing 80-20's unique power to deliver a bloc vote.
What a difference that 4 years make!

80-20's growing prestige in the political arena is due to ALL OF YOU
who sacrificed your money and time to nurture 80-20. Keep up
with your history-making support.

C) Our interns are recruiting members very successfully. Thus far
Paul Jung, an intern from the Korea American community, has
recruited the most members.

D) Prof. Jerry Yang, an 80-20 Board Member was honored by the
Asian Am. Heritage Foundation of NJ, which was founded many years
ago by Dr. Steven Ko, another 80-20 Board member.

One of our Chang-Lin Tien interns, Sherry Zhang of NJ will
be interviewed on The Voice of America, VOA
-- live broadcast
to China from 7:30 to 8:00 a.m. E.C.T. on 6/11.

Here is how it came about.

As interns for 80-20, they undergo two weeks of intense training.
After that they'll go into our community to recruit members for 80-20.
The purpose is to let them learn how to organize which is the
essence of politics
. Part of the training is for each intern to try get
a press release about their joining 80-20 into their respective local
papers. What follows best illustrates how "A little spark can start a
prairie fire."

1) 80-20 issued a press release in English and urged each intern
to try get it published in his/her local papers,
2) Sherry Zhang translated the release into Chinese and submitted
it to various news outlets in her locality as did other interns,
3) The Chinesenewsnet among other media published the translated
release,
4) VOA saw the news on Chinesenewsnet, and contacted Sherry,
5) Sherry accepted the invitation to go on live in VOA's broadcast to
China on 6/11 at 7:30-8:00 a.m., E.C.T.

So that's our 80-20's interns, OUR young lions are at work and
play
. Getting a press release about oneself published and then getting
interviewed by VOA in a live broadcast to China is certainly work and
fun. One of our interns may try to recruit you as an 80-20 member
soon. Please respond generously.

This internship program will continue next year. Offspring of 80-
20 members will be given preference

Parents who don't speak English can be citizens!

Do you have parents who don't speak English? Do they want to attain citizenship? If so, there are four possible exceptions to the rule of taking an English test.

The literacy requirements does not apply to any person
(1) with "physical or developmental disability or mental impairment," or
(2) over 50 and have had a green card for over twenty years, or
(3) over 55 and have had a green card for over 15 years.

In addition, the Attorney General may give "special consideration, as determined by the Attorney General," to any person who is over the age of 65 and have had a green card for over 20 years.

The sections of the Immigration and Nationality Act are: 312(b)(2)(A) and section 312(b)(2)(B). [INA: act 312 - requirements as to understanding the English language, history, principles, and form of government of the united states sec. 312. [8 u.s.c. 1423]

ANNOUNCEMENT: China Press (Chao Pao) will be publishing a
series of three articles on 80-20 on May 29, 30, and 31.

According to its Special Correspondent Ms. Dajiu Li, its "newspaper will use three almost full pages to publish this article on the special page 'news pursuit'. A Shining Example of Overcoming SARS Hysteria

The New York Chinese Cultural Center (NYCCC) and The 80-20
Initiative (80-20) jointly announced today that a potentially
dangerous precedent
against all persons of Chinese descent in the US
has been turned into a positive and inspiring precedent.

On May 4, five artists sent by NYCCC to a middle school in Vineland,
NJ were denied the opportunity to perform their contractual duties at
the school owing to fear over SARS. The five have not been to "SARS
affected areas" in the last two years, and the school knew about it in
advance. Should this hysteria over SARS have been allowed to stand
and spread, extreme harm could come to all persons of Chinese
descent in the USA. Fortunately, under the inspiring leadership of
Superintendent Clarence C. Hoover, III and Assistant Superintendent
Mary Adair of the Vineland School District, the bad incident has been
turned into an inspiring and positive precedent of how to overcome
the SARS hysteria.

Dr. Hoover said, "As the Superintendent of the Vineland Public
Schools, I am making a public apology to all of these performers ...
"
He also said that the unfortunate incident will be used by the School
District as "a teachable moment." He said, "Over the next several
weeks, we will be working with our schools to heighten public
awareness of SARS and .. to create a climate of understanding
."

The artists will be paid for the week as contracted. Their program will
be re-scheduled if not this semester, then the next semester.

Amy Chin, Executive Director of NYCCC, said, "I am happy to report to
our community that this incident has been resolved to our Center's
complete satisfaction. I want to acknowledge the enlightened
leadership of Dr. Hoover and others. I also want to thank The 80-20
Initiative for its support to the Center and the Chinese community
during this episode. In addition, the outpouring of letters and calls
from concerned individuals and organizations from folks across the
country has been very heartwarming for me and all the artists. This
incident has truly strengthened our community in untold ways."

Is 80-20 a Front for the Democratic Party?

Hi.

1. Is 80-20 a front for the Democratic Party?

No. 80-20 is non-partisan. Its strategy is to induce
Democratic & Republican Parties to compete in serving our
rightful interests. The party that helps our community the most,
get 80-20's help in the presidential election.

2. Didn't 80-20 endorsed Gore, a Democrat, in the 2000 election?

Yes. It was because the Democratic party had done more for
our community in the preceding 2 years. First, Pres. Clinton had
appointed the historic first APA cabinet member, Norm Mineta.
Second, the Dems. were more supportive of immigration and anti-
hate crime legislations. Both are important to the APA community.
Thirdly, Gore wrote 80-20 to state that he would strongly support
80-20's specific programs designed to win equal opportunity and
equal justice for APAs, should he become the President, but Bush
didn't. Bush sent an indirect letter to 80-20 filled with general
platitudes.

3. Isn't 80-20's President, S. B. Woo a Democrat?

No. S.B. Woo is now registered as an Independent. He has
also announced never to run for an office or accept a federal
government appointment .

4. Why has 80-20 criticized the Republican Party so often?

Not often. Only twice since 2000. Both because the
Republican Party deserved it. The first time was when Senator
Lott reminisced about the good old days of segregation. The
second time was when Congressman Coble said that the
internment of Japanese Americans during WW II was proper. If
80-20 didn't spring to action during those incidents, 80-20 would
be guilty of not doing its job for our community.

5. Has 80-20 ever criticized the Democratic Party?

Yes. In 80-20's e-mail message of 10/2/02, entitled "Senator
Torricelli/ David Chang/ Asia Gate," we stated "John Huang raised
$3,000,000 from our community for the Democratic Party. Result?
Our community got trashed instead of gained political clout."

6. Has 80-20 ever praised the Republican Party?

Yes. In a 11/12/02 e-mail, entitled "Stopping Racist Attacks ­
Unity Is Power," 80-20 stated: "Since the 2000 election, the
Republican Party has served APA interests well in two
particular aspects
. First, President Bush has appointed more APAs
to significant federal level positions than President Clinton. Second,
GOP's immediate rejection of its own candidate owing to her racist
attack on an APA candidate was exemplary. The Democratic Party
may have some things to learn from the Republican Party
in these aspects.

7. Why did some APA Republican leaders describe 80-20
as a "front for the Democratic Party?"

If and when 80-20 endorses the Republican presidential nominee,
APA Dem. leaders will describe 80-20 as "a front for the Republican
Party." Such things come with the turf. :-)

8. Is 80-20 trying to distance itself from the Democratic Party
through this e-mail now?


No. 80-20 will continue to pressure both political parties to
respond to our rightful concerns. The response of the Republican
leadership to our concern over Congressman Howard Coble is
unsatisfactory. 80-20 will continue to press for the desired result.
Note that to be effective in politics in America, one must use
"carrots and sticks."

A. Effective In Standing Up for Our Community:

1. 10/27/00: 80-20 single-handedly forced the infamous "Daisy TV Ad"
off the air. The ad fanned "yellow peril," and was aired by a
Republican group in the Mid-West region. Time required: 1 day
2. 2/22/02: Induced the second and serious apology from The Seattle
Times regarding Michelle Kwan. Timed required: 8 days
3. 4/17/02: Induced Abercrombie and Fitch to take its new line of 4 T-
shirts, that denigrated the APA community, off the market. Time
required: 3 hours
4. 12/16/02: Induced the Republican Senate Caucus to take a re-vote
on Sen. Lott's leadership position. Time required: 6 hours, although
80-20 probably only functioned as the "last straw" in this matter.

B. Effective in Empowering Our Community Politically

1. 12/27/00: Urged the Bush Administration to appoint an APA
cabinet member. 2 days later, Vice President Cheney approached
Norman Mineta.
2. 6/9/02: Urged the community to display flags on July 4th to help
erase the "foreigners" image. 80-20 spent big $$ to buy ads in
radio, and newspapers in big cities with large APA population to get
the message out. By now, our community's growing tendency to
display flags to identify with America is quite evident.

C. Effective in Protecting Our Community's Political Candidates & Scientists

1. 5/1/02: 80-20 publicized a warning to political candidates who
would mount racist attack on APA candidates, stating that such an
attack would bring 80-20 into the election campaign. Result: 100%
success in the general election of 2002.
2. 2/6/03: Announced a policy to protect APA scientists from trumped
up charges and abusive government investigative techniques that
fail to stand up in court. Such a result will cause 80-20 to join
the victim in suing the government for damages. No such cases have
popped up since.
3. 4/17/03: A policy to stop biased media reports relating to SARS/Spy
from spreading in the mainstream media. Result: too soon to
evaluate.

D. Fighting Harder, When the Pressure Is On -- The Coble Case

This is another area where 80-20 may be uniquely valuable to YOU.
80-20 doesn't just issue press releases to condemn this and
that, and end up meekly walking away when ignored or mocked
by the offending organizations or individuals. 80-20 increases the

SARS: Calming News and Caution

1) Facts:
"There are only 39 cases of SARS in the US as of 4/22/03. None
resulted in death. The thing to watch out for? NOT TO OVER-
RREACT," Dr. Anthony Fauci siad yesterday on CNN. He is the
Director of Nat'l Inst. Of Allergy & Infectious Diseases, NIH.

2) Careless Spreading Of Rumor Can Hurt A Lot Of People:
A supporter wrote in: "As you might have heard that there were
unfounded rumors circulating in the Internet about a Chinese
restaurant owner in both Chinatowns of San Francisco and New York
City that died of SARS and consequently the rumor called for people
to stay away from Chinatowns!!

The business in both places have since suffered tremendously. The
NYC's Chinatown has been hardest hit from 9/11 attacks, now this!!

As an influential organization, I thought you should use your mass
mailings to educate and to call attention to fellow citizens the
unwarranted "boycott" of our own communities."

3) Rumors on SARS May Hurt You or Your Own Business:
What a shameful e-mail title: "PLEASE BE CAREFUL!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! SARS
IN CHINATOWN,NYC" The person was later really embarrassed
& repentant.

4) "There is nothing to fear, except fear itself." -- F. D. Roosevelt.
I, S. B. Woo, intend to eat in a restaurant in Chinatowns of big
cities, anytime I have a chance.

5) After 80-20's "Vigilance on SARS/spy ..." e-mail, The Asian American
Journalist Association, AAJA, issued:
ADVISORY AND RESOURCES ON MEDIA COVERAGE OF SARS

"SARS or Severe acute respiratory syndrome is a respiratory illness that
has been reported in Asia, North America, and Europe. Because of panic
and in some cases -- backlash directed at Asians or Asian Americans
--journalists reporting on SARS are encouraged to keep up with factual
reporting of cases and events and to exercise prudence in making
references to this illness:

SARS is no longer a "mystery" illness. .... Although SARS was first
reported in some countries in Asia, this illness should never be referred
to as an "Asian disease," in the same way that HIV/AIDS should not be
called a "gay disease," or mad cow disease a "British disease." Some
rumors have spread that Chinese restaurants in Asia and the United
States are potential sources of SARS. Focusing on the facts - symptoms,
risk factors, as well as known or probable cause of SARS will help dispel
these rumors. ....."

Be Vigilant On Spy/SARS Related Reports

Two recent events require our vigilance. If we are to overcome,
80-20 needs YOUR help.

SARS:
An authority on Asian Am. affairs, Don T. Nakanishi, Director of
Asian American Studies Center, UCLA, e-mailed 80-20 asking: "What is
80-20 doing with SARS?... I think there is a potential for some very
ugly stereotyping, hate crimes, and loss of civil liberties like
unnecessary quarantining."

Alleged Chinese Double Agent:
Katrina Leung a successful business woman in Los Angeles, was
accused and arrested as an Chinese double agent. See Newsweek,
Periscope, 4/21/03 issue. 80-20 takes no stance on her guilt or
innocence. However, 80-20 will try to ensure that the image of our
community is NOT tainted by the possible misdeeds of one or two
individuals.

80-20 TAKING PRO-ACTIVE ACTION
For biased media reports relating to SARS/spy that insinuate
Asians are more subject to SARS or cast doubts on the loyalty on all
Chinese Americans or make similar groundless statements placing our
community's interest in jeopardy, please

(1) tape the broadcast or cut out the article and send it to Jing Li Yu
(address shown below),
(2) relate what you've taped or cut out to 80-20 via sbw@udel.edu ,
(3) call or write to the careless/biased media outlet YOURSELF and
copy 80-20 in, and
(4) 80-20 will follow up on such media reports that are substantiated
by a tape or an article.

Biased reports must be nipped in the bud, although 80-20 believes
that such reports are less likely today. After the W.H. Lee episode,
many APA organizations have worked to raise the conscience of the
mainstream media. Such efforts include 80-20's annual effort via
radio, tv, newspaper ads and mass-emails urging the entire APA
community to display flags on July 4th, and right after 9/11. 80-20
believes that eliminating our "foreigners" and/or disloyal image is
critical to our winning equal opportunity and justice.

Prestigious Student Summer Internships Available

Chancellor Chang-Lin Tien Student Internship
for Summer, 2003
In memory of Chancellor Chang-Lin Tien, a key founder of 80-20
and the first Asian Am. to become the president of a major university
(The Univ. of Calif., Berkeley), 80-20 will sponsor up to 3 student
interns in 2003. The stipend is $1000 per month from June 1 to
August 31,2003. Only the best and the brightest who are prepared
to work long and hard for public service need apply.

The Memorial Fund was started by classmates of Chang-Lin Tien, the
Mechanical Engineering Class of 1955, National Taiwan University. 80-
20 is proud to sponsor this Memorial Fund, not so much because of
Tien's high academic achievement but rather his legacy in fighting for
justice and equal opportunity for all Americans. When he was a young
college student in Kentucky, he protested discrimination against blacks
on city buses by walking to school for a year. Unlike some successful
Asian Americans who shy away from our community, Tien was a pillar
of strength for our community. He was not concerned about protecting
his own feathers. He cared about doing the right thing for the Asian
American community and the nation.

ORGANIZE, ORGANIZE & ORGANIZE! That is the key to political
success. Today, tens of young staff are working 14 hours/day and 7
days per week in Iowa and New Hampshire organizing for presidential
candidates. If the Asian Am. community is to have its share of
political clout, we need youths who know how to organize politically
-- cutting their teeth in the real world.

The Interns will be trained intensively for 2 weeks and then let go to
recruit dues-paying members for 80-20 under semi-weekly supervision.
The expectation is for each Intern to recruit sufficient members whose
dues will equal to an intern's stipend. In this manner, the Memorial
fund will be self perpetuating, thereby providing a last memory of
Chancellor Tien. At the same time, the program will provide our
youths with the real world experience of the joy and frustration
of organizing the Asian American community.

"Becoming American � The Chinese Experience" will be aired
AGAIN in the greater Los Angeles area! All 3 parts will be shown
In a 5 hour segment, interspersed with interesting interviews with
well known Chinese Americans who are all 80-20 supporters.
Station: KOCE tv station, one of the two affiliates of the Public
Broadcasting Service (PBS) in LA.

partly because some seniors protested against his presence in light

80-20 never stops until a conflict is resolved to 80-20's or our
community's satisfaction, although 80-20 always aims for a win-win
ending if at all possible. Yes! If a person or an organization harms our
community but is willing to make amends, 80-20 loves to making the
repentant former offender a winner. If otherwise, however, 80-20 will
apply unrelenting pressure until the opposition knows never to do it
to our community again. Either way, 80-20 achieves its objective.

In the past, some APA organizations were known to be quick in
mounting a protest, but when ignored by the offending entity would
meekly walk away. While such reactions to perceived affronts were well-
intentioned, their lack of persistence to follow up had unexpected
consequences. Such practice had formed a very negative impression in
the institutional memory of both the Democratic and Republican
parties and the mainstream media. That was one reason why our
community's voice and/or interests were often ignored by those three
important institutions of America.

Act When You Still Have Time

YOU and 80-20 NEED each other. Don't believe it? Read on.

21 members of U. S. House of Representatives introduced a
resolution for a boycott of this year's Paris Air Show. Others wanted to
boycott Grey Poupon mustard, Michelin tires, and anything else made
in France . Restaurants replaced French fries on their menus with
"Freedom fries."

All that anger for what? Simply because France refused to support
us in a Security Council resolution on Iraq? Hasn't France been a long-
time ally? Aren't French people also of European origin? Is there any
fear that France will ever wage war against us?

Ponder the above a minute, and ask yourself what will happen if,
God forbid, we go to war against an Asian nation** ?

What kind of reaction will come from politicians then? Much
stronger? Will the number of sponsors be 21 or 210 or 450 at that time?

Think about what will happen to the Asian Americans who have
traded, or visited, or done services for that "enemy nation!" Will they
be examined under a microscope and scrutinized under dire conditions?
Will they be place in internment camps? Read a Washington Post
article about the fears of Arab Americans, not just the Iraqi Ams ***.

Get involved, while there is still time.

The only way you can protect yourselves politically is to form a
powerful political voice that can affect the next election. Politicians
care most about winning the next election. When they sense that WE
could make them win or lose the next election, they will begin to
address our rightful concerns.

80-20 is the only Asian American organization that has the
experience (4 years), the foundation (650,000 on its e-mail list, and an
organization that is open, democratic and transparent) and the legal
status to organize a powerful political voice. Civic organizations that
enjoy tax exempt status are FORBIDDEN to engage in political activities.
80-20 is registered with the Federal Election Commission as a political
action committee, and has the legal rights to help elect or defeat
political candidates.

Join 80-20 now. There is not a day to lose. The election is only 1.5

Becoming American"-- a LESSON for All Asian Ams.

After watching "Becoming American," a supporter e-mailed asking
what "if early Chinese Americans had behaved differently"?
Mr. Wan referred to "Chinese Americans." However, the discussion
is relevant to all Asian Americans. See below.
"Mr. Woo:
... We Chinese Americans must be more politically
astute. We cannot live in our shells, ignoring what
is going on around us.

I have been reading about the history of Chinese
Americans. I am convinced that had early Chinese
Americans behaved differently, history may have been
different. Racial discrimination has many elements,
not only the color of one's skin. ....

Unfortunately, I still see the inward-looking attitude
of present-day Chinese in America. It seems they are
content to live in a China in the US, without trying
to learn the dynamics, people, and politics of this land.

The following is S. B.'s observation:
A Tale of Two New Immigrant Groups � Irish & Chinese

The Irish and the Chinese came to American in large numbers at about
the same time, around the 1850s. At first, both were blatantly
discriminated and exploited in workplaces.

The Irish used the political process to seek equal opportunity.
That is, they applied their community's money and votes in a bloc to
reward politicians who cared for them, or punish those who didn't.
Soon, the power of the government was used by politicians, who sought
Irish votes, to prosecute discrimination against the Irish. Good jobs
opened to the Irish. They became an equal partner in the making of
the American Dream.

The Chinese, owing to language & cultural barriers, used the court
process instead of politics to fight discrimination. They didn't want to
change their citizenship while they could prior to the Chinese Exclusion
Act, because they didn't knowing the importance of group political
clout for a minority in a democracy. Even after they became eligible for
citizenship they stayed away from politics.

The difference in consequences is painful and heartbreaking. The
Chinese emphasized so much about living for their children. But they
failed to realize that for their own children's sake, they needed to
establish Group Political Clout.

What about this generation of Asian Americans?

Most of us are highly educated and do not have language difficulties.
However, the failure to appreciate the importance of Group
Political Clout to our children's future remains. Consequently, so does
the glass ceiling, except for that in the federal government,
which 80-20 helped to shatter via the 2000 presidential
election.

Learning from Watching Becoming American Pt. I

"With your indulgence, I like to share what I learned from watching
"Becoming American -- I" S.B.

Part I:

People, especially politicians, welcome or reject immigrants
according to their own needs. That's why the Gov. of CA, Leland
Stanford, flip-flopped repeatedly regarding Chinese immigrants. First,
when there was resentment against cheap Chinese labor, he voiced
"yellow peril." When he headed the "Railroad to the East" project, he
employed cheap Chinese railroad workers en masse & honored their
high achievements. When the political wind shifted again, he
voted for the "Chinese Exclusion Act," as a US senator from CA.

"Democracy is the worst form of government until compared with
all others," said Winston Churchill. I agree 100%. Part I, however,
showed an ugly part of democracy. Getting power and votes drove
politicians to advocate the "Chinese Exclusion Act." Ideals and reasons
be damned.

Lesson: All minorities, especially the new immigrants, must find
their own powerful ways to "reward or punish" politicians in order to
balance mass hysteria when it comes, as during the "Chinese Exclusion
Act." Otherwise, our interest will be ignored. To most politicians,
winning the next election is what counts. Past service to America or to a
politician by a group or an individual, personal relations, reasoning, ...,
etc. unfortunately don't count very much.

A TV Show You Don't Want to Miss

"BECOMING AMERICAN: The Chinese Experience"

It's a 3-part Bill Moyers Special, each of 90 minutes. It is the
microcosm of immigrants' experiences in America. It applies
not only to Chinese, but all immigrants from Asia & Europe,
including the Irish, Polish, Italians and Jewish.

Part 1 illuminates the experience of early Chinese immigrants --
taking on jobs considered undesirable by American males. The Irish
had the same experience. For example, in the 1860s, Irish and Chinese
made up the bulk of railway workers.

Part 2 records the repercussion against the existence of "cheap
immigrant labor," especially in hard times and in areas where the
immigrants congregated. For the Chinese it was San Francisco. For
Irish, it was Boston. "No Irish Need Apply" was blatantly displayed
in newspaper ad in Boston.

Part 3 records the major improvement for Chinese as a result of
America's political needs. PBS stated: "At war with Japan, China
became an American ally. Chinese Americans found themselves
suddenly embraced by America's political establishment, and the
exclusion laws were quickly repealed. Chinese men and women moved
into factory jobs, the military service and other arenas formerly closed
to them."

Similarly, Irish won better opportunity in workplaces through
politics. The Irish became highly politically organized. Boston became
a political base. The fabled "Irish Mafia" in politics later propelled
John F. Kennedy into the Presidency in 1960.

As you watch the 3-part series, see if you would agree with 2
observations offered by 80-20:

(1) San Francisco and Boston were respectively locations where
repression against Chinese and Irish were the strongest. However, the
same two cities become the source of political power for Chinese Ams.
and Irish Ams, once they've learned politics!

(2) The level of YOUR achievement is linked to politics.
The bigger the group political clout the more individuals in that group
will be allowed to live to the maximum of their potential. Ponder a
moment the dramatic increase in the level of achievement of women,
blacks and gays, we hope you'd agree that 80-20 is telling you the
truth. There are still glass ceilings above us. Please do your share to
help build our group political clout.

Victory IV

1) Exceeding our Goal -- 7491 signed instead of 6000:

In one month, 7,491 have signed the petition to the Republican
leadership requesting their help to induce Rep. Coble to apologize and
resign as Chair of the Homeland Security Subcomm. We aimed for 6,000

Party affiliations of signers are as seen below. The numbers don't
add up to the 7491, because some signers left party affiliation unfilled.
Independent: 2733; Republican: 869; Democrat: 2349; Others: 971

2) More Heat on Coble:

When Sen. John Edwards, a Dem. presidential candidate, spoke up
against Rep. Coble who is from the same state of North Carolina,
another NC Republican Rep. Richard Burr criticized Sen. Edwards for not
being loyal to a fellow N. Carolinian.

This got Sen. John Kerry, another Dem. president candidate, to work
in another shot at Rep. Coble. Kerry said:
"It's discouraging to see that Richard Burr believes that to be loyal
to North Carolina you have to remain silent about Howard Coble's
indefensible remarks. ... I proudly stand by what I said two weeks ago.
Howard Coble's suggestion that the internment of Japanese
Americans was necessary for our national security takes us backwards
and calls into serious question not just his judgment, but his ability
to serve as Chairman of the newly organized House Subcommittee on
Homeland Security."

3) Republican Leaders Criticized for "Selective Outrage":

Last week, Dem. Rep. Jim Moran made insensitive statements about
the Jewish Ams. He apologized and lost his post as one of the 24
Regional managers of the Dem. House Caucus. Prior to that GOP Leaders
criticized Moran severely. A CNN commentary observed:

"White House spokesman Ari Fleischer called Moran's words
"shocking," while House Majority Leader Tom DeLay, R-Texas, not
surprisingly found Moran's comments "very damaging."

Both Fleischer and DeLay stand accused of selective outrage.
Neither man uttered a critical word about Rep. Howard Coble, R-North
Carolina, who publicly stated recently that the internment of
Japanese Americans during WW II was the appropriate thing to do."

Victory III

More battle results !
1) Another Dem. Presidential Candidate Supports Us:
Senator & presidential candidate John Edwards of NC calls for Rep.
Coble's ouster from Homeland Security Subcommittee Chairmanship.
Senator Edwards is from the same state as Rep. Coble. That is
significant. In a press release issued on March 4, 2003, Senator
Edwards said,
"Someone who thinks it was OK for the United States to put
innocent Americans behind barbed wire fences in 1942
should not make decisions about how to protect Americans
in 2003 .... the Republican Party should seriously reconsider
keeping him on as chairman of the House Judiciary
Subcomm. on Crime, Terrorism and Homeland Security."

2) More than 2,000 Signers in 36 hours! Big Mo!
More than 6,400 signers and more are coming in. The petition site
