80-20 Endorses Republican Whitman for CA Governor

The 80-20 PAC applauds the recommendation of the 80-20 California
Coalition and has endorsed a Republican Meg Whitman for California
Governor.

When Whitman wins, WE win. Here is why.

Meg Whitman has actually gone above and beyond what 80-20 had
asked for in its questionnaire, and gave us more.

In Q1 through Q3, 80-20 looked for a yes/no answer from Whitman and
Brown to address
1) the glass ceiling above Asian Ams in CA's state government,
2) the paucity of Asian Am. university trustees , and
3) the lack of Asian Am. state judges.

Brown said he didn't care to answer. Click on

Whitman's answer was "I'll go beyond that. I'll not only appoint
APIs to the positions referred to in your questionnaire, I'll give you
input to who are to be appointed. The glass ceiling problem shall be
solved the same way. Help me appoint the best high level officials who
have the authority to shatter the glass ceiling for Asian Ams."

Are these her exact words? No. But it could be what she could legally
state, given the dictate of CA Proposition 209 which explicitly
prohibits "political institutions to consider race, sex or ethnicity." Go

Her reply to us is sown below.

Only the sentences shown in red (emphasis added) are substantive. All
the rest may just be sweet words signifying nothing.

What is her answer to Q4? Her answer is why wait till the 3rd year to
check my performance? See me "early in my term" so that I'll make
the kind of appointments that will yield the desired results for Asian
Ams.

Why didn't she answer yes to Q5? Because CA's Legislature (Senate plus
Assembly) has already formally apologized in July 2009 to Asian Ams for
its past wrongs. Click on

Is 80-20 absolutely certain that Whitman will do that much good for
us? NO. That is the defect of a statement. However given the dictate of
Proposition 209, Whitman's reply "meet with me . . . to discuss API
appointments" does seem the best she can do, perhaps a bit more
than what we asked for.

80-20 is not without a recourse, if those were empty promises.
There is always Whitman's NEXT election! We choose believe her for now.

Use your imagination to help Whitman win. When Whitman
wins, WE win. [5 "W" words? Do a high-five for the 5 Ws & be a
Whitman supporter. :) :) ]

PS Additional News! 80-20 brings values to Asian Am voters. Politicians
now chase after Asian Am. voters, like they do other voters. Example?
(1) Whitman bought political TV ads in Asian Am. community, a historic
first for any major non-Asian politician in CA.
(2) Brown sought out Dr. Albert Wang of Fremont, CA to be a
"talking head" for Brown. Albert, an 80-20 Life Member, showing
solidarity with 80-20, declined.

AsAms versus Jerry Brown in CA

ALL OF US WILL BECOME EQUAL CITIZENS, if we have the courage to
reward our political friends and punish our foes, instead of selfishly
calculating how it'll benefit "ME"!

Of course, we MUST exercise due diligence to know which politicians
are truly our friends or foes. The ones showering us with sweet words
may not be our friends, nor those with the "right" party affiliation whether
R or D. We look at the DEEDS of a politician.

That is where Jerry Brown comes in. He said he has no time to
answer our questionnaire expressing our concerns -- a BAD SIGN. A
candidate must share its voters' concerns. If Brown is NOT willing to
share our concerns now, he'll NOT share our concerns if he wins
the election.

That brings us to LA. Assemblyman Mike Eng, a friend and an 80-
20 member, who has without knowledge of Brown's unwillingness to
address our concerns, scheduled a rally to appear with Brown in LA to
get Asian Am votes. Upon learning of that rally, 80-20 immediately
emailed Mike to ask him to stop that rally, unless Brown answers
our questionnaire positively.

Mike is working on it. 80-20 expects Mike to refuse the appearance, if
Brown doesn't answer positively. It's time for our political leaders to stop
endorsing candidates, unless there is a concrete benefit back to the
community.

At the worst, 80-20 will organize a demonstration against Brown
in LA on 9/8 (Friday) . If 80-20 calls for a demonstration, I'll of
course be there.

On a different front, 80-20 rewards it friends. 80-20's Exec Comm. has
authorized $15K to $25K to help get Sen. Boxer elected in CA, because
she responded to 80-20's appeal to recommend Asian Am. jurists to
President Obama.

80-20 has begun an aggressive media buy for the last two weeks of the
election to reward Sen. Boxer and punish Jerry Brown, since he said no to
us first perhaps encouraging Meg Whitman to do the same. In any respect,
hitting both punishes neither. We must punish the one who said NO to us
first.

Mark my word. Even when Brown wins, he'll come court us for his next
election, IF our punishment is effective this time. This is how American
politics works. If Brown answers with all yeses, we'll then swing our army
to confront Whitman.

Watch us. 80-20 fights for you like no other Asian Am. orgs have ever
done in the history of America.

AsAms mad at Jerry Brown

Calls and faxes poured into California Democratic candidate for
Governor, Jerry Brown's headquarters. All saying that if he is unwilling
to share our rightful concerns, then we'll not vote for him or we'll
reconsider our earlier intention to vote for him.

Among the faxes copied to me, there are many very thoughtful
observations and comments:

1) . . . Even Hillary Clinton and Barack Obama had time to answer our
questionnaire when they ran, why not you?

2) . . . Lacking in energy at your age?

3) . . . Even if your office are too busy to fill out the questionnaire prepared
by (80-20 California Coalition), would you please address those grievances
in your own way and say what Mr. Brown is prepared to do to relieve the
grievances stated in the questionnaire, if elected?

4) . . . If you lack resource and time for appropriately responding our
request, then I don't think you will have time and energy to take care us in
the future.

Please keep on calling Jerry Brown's headquarters 510 628-0202 or

faxing 510 629-0909. Keep up the pressure. Let Jerry Brown know that
Asian Ams will not tolerate being treated as tokens today. We are NOT like
the olden days when he was the Governor from 1975 to 1983.

We heard that there may be a Brown event in LA on Oct. 8th aiming at
Asian Americans. We may organize a demonstration at that event.
Those of you who may want to participate in the demonstration, please let

TO: All Asian Ams. who reside in or have friends in California

It's time to rise and be heard. It is Call To Action!

California is a state that Asian Ams. should enjoy EQUAL opportunity.
We have an 8% share in voting population and a 15% share in general
population -- large enough to be politically effective with the state
government. Right?

Unfortunately, no! Indeed in some areas, CA is worse than other states.
Examples?

(1) huge % of Asian Am. students in state universities, but only
3.4 % of presidents/Chancellors,
(2) 15% population, but much less % of judges in state courts. Indeed,
in CA Appeals Court - San Francisco, it is 0% among 25 judges, &
(3) The glass ceiling on Asian Am state employees is as low as other
states.

Therefore, 80-20's "California Coalition" has sent a questionnaire (see *) to
the 2 gubernatorial candidates Meg Whitman & Jerry Brown hoping that
their positive answers will assure equal opportunity for Asian Ams in CA.
The candidates were given two weeks to reply, ending on Oct. 3.

Jerry Brown didn't even wait till the deadline to say NO to us. To see his

VERY IMPORTANT Update

Will the Senate confirm Goodwin Liu & Ed Chen? It may mostly depend
on how Sen. Scott Brown of Massachusetts, a Republican, reacts to
80-20's offer to help him in his 2012 re-election campaign.

How so? Pls read on.

So few Asian Am. are federal judges owing to the benign neglect of
Asian Americans by BOTH political parties. Now the Democrats, under
Pres. Obama, are trying to remedy the shameful situation. However, the
Republican Party seems determined to continue its old ways -- keeping
us down.

The Republicans say that the 2 jurists are too liberal. Is that the real
reason? Think! Since they didn't appoint many conservative AsAm judges when
they had the chance, could it be that they just didn't want many Asian Am
federal judges?

On November 2, the election day, 3 million Asian Am. voters will
reward those who vote to confirm and punish those who thwart us by
blocking the nominations. It is the day of reckoning!

A Summary of the Relevant Past Events:

1. President Obama nominated 7 Asian Am. federal judges since he took
office 2 years ago, almost doubling the original number of 8 Asian
Am. federal judges
2. In Augest, the Senate Republicans used a rarely applied Senate rule to
"kill" the nominations of Goodwin Liu and Ed Chen,
3. Two days later, 80-20 set up a petition site gathering 3300+ signers
asking Pres. Obama to RE-nominate the 2 jurists.
4. Pres. Obama heard our voice and RE-nominated.
5. A few days ago, the Senate Judiciary Committee once again approved
the nominations of Liu & Chen aiming to move the nominations to a
full Senate debate.

The Upcoming Battles

The Senate Republicans will likely block the two nominations from
getting a full-senate debate. This means that 60 votes will be required to
break the block, before the nominations can be confirmed requiring only
51 votes. Since Democrats can only deliver 59 votes, our community must
find ONE Republican Senator to cast the 60th vote to break the block --
80-20 has focused on Sen. S. Brown of MA.

If the Republicans choose to block, they are blatantly ignoring the
expressed will of Asian Ams which include the following:

i) 3300+ signed on 80-20's petition to Pres. Obama,
ii) numerous Asian Ams sent automatically generated letters to
Senate leadership - Sen. Reid (D) & Sen. McConnell (R) - to move the
nominations for a full senate debate without a block. The site was
set up by NAPABA, AAJC and OCA.
iii) Supporters of 80-20 poured an estimated 100 to 150 faxes into
Sen. Scott Brown' D.C. office, urging him to cast the 60th
vote to break the block, should it occur. They are mostly
MA voters writing their own letters, signing and giving their
home addresses.

Sen. Brown, a Republican, faces a very tough re-election bid in 2012 in
MA which is just about the most Democratic state. Since 19 years ago, no
Republican Congressional delegate has EVER won re-election. Brown will
need every vote he can get to be re-elected. So if he helps us, we'll
help him. 80-20 shall lead an Asian Am. bloc vote in Brown's favor in
2012, if he casts the 60th vote to break the block.

PS: Lena Tam, an 80-20 Board Member, is running for re-election as a
councilwoman of the Alameda City. She is the first Asian Am. elected

official who is serving 159 on 80-20's Board, and is a great public servant. We
need to make sure that she is re-elected. She faced completely false
accusations from some dirty politicians. Alameda County D.A. had just
completely exonerated her on 9/8/2010.

How Tough Are We?

When the going gets tough, the tough gets going. That quality
is as important in organizations as is in individuals. America admires
toughness be it in athletes, CEOs, workers, teachers, politicians or
organizations.

When two superbly qualified Asian Am jurists, recommended by the
Senate Judicial Committee, were blocked by the Senate Republicans on a
technicality*, 80-20 rose to petition Pres. Obama to RE-NOMINATE them.
We don't give up just because the powerful says NO to us. We want to
know their reasons for reject those 2 nominees.

Blocking on a technicality* is a devious act. Let the 2 nominees go to a
full senate hearing. Then the Republicans senators may state their reasons
of objection publicly on the senate floor.

The days of simply telling us no, and betting on that we'll quietly go
away is gone. Not when 80-20 is around. The following is a true story.

Sen. John Kerry of MA once said to me, "S.B., do you know why
Asian Ams are not effective in politics? It is because both Parties and the
national media know that EVEN YOUR ACTIVISTS will go away
quietly, when told NO or when having been ignored long enough."

80-20 rose 11 years ago to change that image for our children.

Important Notice: New Blood in TOP Leadership

80-20 has long planned the infusion of new blood into its top leadership, while
maintaining continuity and success. To accomplish these goals, the following
changes have occurred or will occur.

80-20 has hired a fulltime Executive Director, Daniel Feng of Davis, CA to begin
in Sept. 1, 2010. Suzanna Lin, M.D., will continue to serve as Special Assistant to
the President/Exec. Director. To ensure smooth transition, S. B. Woo was asked
by the Board to help tune in and assist Feng for the remaining 4 months of 2010
as the Acting President.

Effective now, 80-20 actively seeks candidates for president and vice president
in 2011 to serve 80-20. The membership-wide election shall occur in the 2nd
week of November, 2010. S. B. Woo has stated that he shall not be a candidate
for either of those positions, though he'll continue to serve 80-20 in the second
line including advising Feng. Additional information about Daniel Feng is shown
below.

Daniel Feng is registered as a Independent or "Decline"in Calif.
i.e. not associated with any political party. He has been a dues-paying
member for the last 4 years, and was a Delegate to 80-20's 2008
Endorsement Convention, flying at his own expense to attend the Convention
in Foster City, CA from Boston, MA where he then resided.

Professionally, Mr. Feng has over twenty years of experience with progressive
management responsibilities in a variety of industries and services institutions.
He has also actively participated in and made significant contribution to many
local and national elections, in which he worked vigorously to promote Asian
Americans’ interest. He was highly praised by those leaders of our community
who know him.

Call To Action -- sign a petition to President Obama

A. Background Info. - 2 Asian Am. judicial nominees, given the highest
rating - "unanimously well qualified"- by the Am. Bar Assoc. and approved
by the Senate Judiciary Comm., were "blocked" by Senate Republicans.

As you may know, 4 years ago, only 6 or 0.7% of the federal judges were
Asian Ams, all at the lowest rank of District Courts. 80-20 found it
outrageous. YOU and 80-20 made an effective issue of it getting Pres.

Obama's commitment to appoint more in writing.

By Aug. 1, we were well on our way to having 15 Asian Am. life-tenured
federal judges, two at the higher rank of Appeals Court Judges, one rank
below the Supreme Court Justices. However, the Senate Republicans
invoked a rarely used senate rule to "return to President" the nominations
of Goodwin Liu for Appeals Court and Edward Chen for the N. CA
District Court."

That means that these two nominations are DEAD, reducing the counted
from 15 to 13. 80-20 is puzzled. Do the senate Republicans want to
perpetuate the grossly unfair under-representation of AsAms on the
Federal bench?

B. The Petition to Pres. Obama -- please RE-NOMINATE them

Let's turn our anger into positive actions. Pls go sign a petition to
Pres. Obama asking him to re-nominate those two Asian Ams. See below.
We need a fantastic response from you in order to achieve this goal.

"Dear Mr. President:

Please re-nominate Goodwin Liu and Edward Chen, when the
Senate comes back in session on Sept. 6. If you will kindly do so, I
(we) pledge to help find one Republican senator to give you the
60th vote for their senate confirmations.
You are the first president to publicly respond to expressed Asian
American concerns.

(1) You've increased the number of Asian Am. life-tenured federal
judges from 8, who were all at the lowest rank, when you took office,
to a potential 15, including 2 Appeals Court judges, and
(2) Your Labor Department has assured us, in writing, that Exec. Order
11246 will be enforced for Asian Ams. The Labor Dept. under Pres.
Bush had steadfastly refused to do so, resulting in Asian Ams having

not even half the national average odds to become managers/
administrators, i.e. glass ceiling.

Dear 80-20 Dues-paying Members:

80-20's Bylaws, similar to the US Constitution, need occasional
amendments to fit the changing needs and times.

The following amendments have been proposed by 80-20's Board. They
will need membership approval to become operative. In addition, YOU, as
a member, are entitled to a minimum of one month's advance notice,
before it is submitted to YOU for a vote.

The 3 amendments are shown below. They deal with "chapter
privileges" and the privileges of the Exec. Director, which 80-20 will soon
hire. 80-20 is tightening the Bylaws languages to offer the most cost-
effective service to the membership and the AsAm community.

The amendments would probably be classified by most people as "house
cleaning amendments"; They intend to improve efficiency without
adversely affecting your rights and privileges.

The original Bylaws are shown below in black, the changes and/or

[A] Bylaws provision 6.2.1 "Requirement To Be a Chapter" is amended
as follows:

c. elect its officers at least once every two years between November 1
and December 31 and submit the names and addresses of the officers to
National by January 15 of the following year. All names of officers, board
members and members shall be current, updated and posted on chapter’s
webpage.

d. register as an independent Political Action Committee, if the chapter
intends to endorse political candidates other than federal candidates, and
is required by state laws to do so.

[B] Bylaws provision 5.6 "Executive Director" is amended as:

The Executive Director shall be given a discretionary fund that is (delete
"that is") up to 5% of the annual budget or $10,000 per annum whichever
is the larger, but subject to modifications of the employment contract
which may provide a gradual increase up to $10,000 per annum."

Again, the above is just a notice to you that such proposed changes will
ask for your vote after a one month's notice.

The above exercise is the typical practice of a democratic institution. To
empower our community, 80-20 aims to be a model in following

Calif. & OH AsAms ask their governors ….

Great News: AsAms. in Calif. and Ohio, under 80-20' leadership, shall send
a questionnaire to their respective gubernatorial candidates asking for
commitments to provide equal opportunity in STATE agencies and
universities, BEFORE they'll decide which candidate to support using
their bloc vote.

Remember how effective 80-20's questionnaire in 2008 was with then
candidates Obama, Biden, Clinton and others that included the
appointment of federal judges? It's the SAME program expanded to
the state level!

NOTE: 1/3 of the states are re-electing their governors. That's the BEST
time to induce your gubernatorial candidates to do the right things for AsAms,
because they need your vote.

Why CA & OH but not the other states?
80-20 is strong in those 2 states.

(1) In CA, 80-20 has 8 of its 20 Board members; 700 dues-paying members,
and 5 affiliates, including CAPA & CBC -- both being big and effective
organizations. Many of the Asian Am. political leaders are also 80-20
members.

(2) In OH, 80-20 has established 3 chapters in 2 years. There are some
very capable AsAm leaders who are 80-20 chapter presidents/chairmen.
Hopefully a 4th chapter will be formed soon, centered about Columbus.

The stronger 80-20 is in a state, the earlier it can help AsAms in that state
achieve equal opportunity.

Shocking statistics on Asian American employment

Dear fellow Asian Americans,

Martin Luther King, Jr. said "Injustice anywhere is a threat to justice
everywhere. We are caught in an inescapable network of mutuality, tied
in a single garment of destiny. Whatever affects one directly, affects all
indirectly."

How true that is. Our nation's prosperity and strength is undermined
when any of her people is held back or obstructed from achieving their
full potential.

Asian Americans (AsAms) comprise one of the fastest growing ethnic
groups in America, and represent over 5% of the US population. Yet in
2008, before President Obama took office, only 8 - a measly 0.93%
of the 864 US federal judges - were Asian American (AsAm)! And
not a single judge on the appellate (circuit) court is AsAm. All
of the 8 Asian American judges served at the lowest federal
district court level.

Could such a pathetic under-representation reflect a lack of qualified
AsAm candidates to be appointed for federal judgeships? Heck NO! Dept
of Labor statistics shows AsAms have an above-average representation in
the legal profession, at over 5.5%. Many distinguished AsAm legal
scholars serve as law professors and even deans at renowned law schools.
If AsAm were equitably represented in the federal judiciary,
we’d have around 45 federal judges instead of only 8!

It was not until 2006, when 80-20 Initiative took on the challenge to
reverse the gross underrepresentation of AsAms in the federal courts and
in upper management of the American workplace, that the tide finally
began to turn.

In 2008, 80-20 secured the landmark written commitment (see
http://www.80-20initiative.net/news/preselect2008_obama.jpg ) from
then-Presidential candidate Obama to remedy the inequity faced by
AsAms. Since President Obama took office, he has taken concrete steps to
nominate more AsAm judges. If all of President Obama’s AsAm nominees
were confirmed by the Senate, we’d have nearly doubled the number of
AsAm judges to 15, with 2 at the appellate level. Judge Denny Chin of
New York became the first Chinese American appellate court judge earlier
this year. Viet-Am and Korean Am are among the judges and nominees.

The inequity AsAms face is not limited to the federal
judiciary. Dept of Labor statistics also confirm that compared
to national average, we have only 25% to 45% chance of rising to
management ranks in private industry and academia!! Yes, you
read the horrendous numbers correctly! Did you ever think that the glass
ceiling was THAT low and that the odds against us were THAT awful?

We have a LONG ways to go before equal opportunity and
justice is enjoyed by AsAm.

Fed up? Outraged? Then do your part by becoming a dues-

Ohio's Impact On Asian Ams

Ohio has only 135,000 Asian Ams. However, it already has 2 active
chapters, forming a 3rd and aiming to have a 4th chapter -- hopefully
before Ohio elects its NEXT governor this November.

So what? Ohio might become the first of the 50 states whose Asian Ams
will enjoy equal opportunity in the state government agencies and the
state universities. That is the essence of 80-20, and the political process it
advocates.

What is so special is that Ohio is fairly conservative. It doesn't
have a large AsAm population. It is the perpetual battle-ground-state
of presidential elections. It is leading the way for the AsAm community.

2 years ago, a NW-Ohio chapter, centered about Toledo, was formed
with a bare 25 members. Prof. Yueh-ting Lee, an 80-20 Board member,
was the leading force. It immediately emulated 80-20 National's method-
ology of using the election to get commitments from political leaders. A
questionaire was sent to all mayoral candidates of Toledo asking for "yes
and No" answers i.e. iron-clad commitments. All candidates save one
answered. When the mayor was elected, his commitments were fulfilled
and began to benefit the AsAm community. Both the mayor and Asian
Ams in Toledo were pleased. The chapter has grown to 52 members.

A couple of days ago, a SW-Ohio chapter centered about Cincinnati
and Dayton was formed. Munsup Seoh & others were leaders.

Munsup Seoh and Yueh-ting Lee are working to stimulate a NE-Ohio
chapter, centered about Cleveland. The 4th, Central-Ohio chapter
shall be centered about Columbus. Imagine, if all that gets done soon,
and a questionnaire sent to Ohio's gubernatorial candidates.

14 million strong, how to become equal citizens quickly. When women,
blacks and Hispanics are all making great strides in ridding themselves of

"Touchy Topics" on July 4th

Frank Q&A regarding the meaning of CITIZENSHIP & why to hoist
a flag on July 4th.

1. What does it really mean being a US citizen?
It means you owe your primary allegiance to the USA. That is you
consider the USA as the most important nation to you.

2. Does being a US citizen mean that I have to cut all ties to my
old country and my affection for people in my old country?
NO. The US neither expects, nor desires for, you to behave that way.
People can't turn on or off their emotion like a machine. You can continue
to love and care for people in your old country. However, you are to owe
your first allegiance to the USA.
If a person can turn on and off his/her emotion simply because of a
naturalization ceremony to be a US citizen, the US can NOT count on that
individual as a citizen. Why? Such an individuals may also one day cut the
USA off, after another ceremony.

3. What if I don't want to give my primary allegiance to the US?
Then don't apply to be a US citizen. Is it right to want the advantages of
being a US citizen and yet not live up to the accompanying obligations?

4. Why should I celebrate July 4th?
Let's look at 3 reasons.
1) the blessings of liberty each citizen enjoys,
2) the ample opportunities afforded to all, even though Asian Ams still
don't enjoy equal opportunity at workplaces, and
3) the freedom to criticize the country and be not only tolerated, but
also praised as fulfilling one's patriotic duty to push America to
become a "more perfect union."

5. Why does 80-20 urge its supporters to hoist a flag on July
4th? To be more American than Americans?
NO. Two reasons that you may want to hoist a flag.
1) It's the right thing to do, for the reasons mentioned in 4), and
2) There is also a pragmatic reason. A lot of our compatriots think that
we, Asian Ams, are more loyal to our old countries than to the USA. So
long as they think that way, we'll not be able to achieve our equal
opportunity in workplaces.

Hoisting a flag is complementary to 80-20's usage of group political

We LOST our chance to be kingmakers on the 6/8 primary in CA. Let's
make sure that we FIND it in the next CA primary. Kindly please read.

[A] FAQ

(1) Is it possible for the small % of Asian Am voters in Calif to become
the political kingmakers in a CA primary? YES. Read on.

(2) Assuming that it's possible, what good will it do?
We may then use that clout to induce CA's governor to give us ironclad
commitment to break the glass ceiling against Asian Ams. in CA.

(3) Is there a glass ceiling over AsAms in CA's state government?
You be the judge. Keep these statistics in mind:
Asian Am population in CA: 14%
Asian students in Univ. of CA System: 40%
Cabinet officers in CA Governor's Administration: 13% (2/15)
Regents in the UC system: 5.5% (1/18)
Chancellors in the UC system: 20% (2/10)
Presidents in the State Univ. system: 4.3% (1/23)
Presidents in the Community College system: 1.8% (2/112)

(4) What good will it do for the rest of us, who don't reside in CA?
When the CA state government breaks its glass ceiling against Asian Ams,
will the other 49 state governments be far behind? Strategically, CA is the
best state for us to target & crack the glass ceiling.

[B] Strategically, how can we be kingmakers in the
2012 PRIMARY election in CA?

Four favorable conditions converge in a CA primary:

i) Asian Ams' vote share is the largest in the state of CA: 7%

ii) Only 1/4 of the voters will vote in a primary*. Hence, our 7% vote share
could become 28%, if all of us vote in a primary.

iii) A large number of candidates run for the same position in a PRIMARY.
Hence, while the other voters split their votes among the many
candidates, our bloc vote goes to the one candidate endorsed
by 80-20.

iv) Our voting share is actually 33%, owing to the recently passed Prop.
14 which allows Declines to vote. (See footnote for details about Prop
14.) The % of Asian Ams having registered as Declines is about twice
that of the general population.

Result? Most candidates endorsed by 80-20 in a CA primary will win.
We will be known as kingmakers in CA primary elections. Candidates,
regardless of party affiliation, will thereafter complete to win our endorse-
ment. 80-20 will use this clout to get candidates to give ironclad
commitments to use their political power, as Pres. Obama did, to make us
EQUAL citizens.!

That was how the Irish, Polish, Italians, blacks and Jewish won their
equal citizenships as well.

That simple? Yes, that simple!

So register to vote. Ask to be a "permanent absentee voter," and vote
in the next PRIMARY.

* 13.7 million Californians voted in the 2008 general election. Only 3.3
million voted in the June 8, 2010 CA primary, which is LESS than 1/4 of
13.7 million.

Footnote: What is Proposition 14?
Prop. 14 has eliminated PARTY primaries in CA. There is only one
STATE primary, where Dem/Rep/Declines/Others may ALL vote. The
two top vote getters, whether in the same party or not, will run against
each other in the general election. "Declines" may vote in a state primary
WITHOUT asking for a specific party ballot. This prop. doesn't affect
the presidential election.

80-20 is looking for an Executive Director. The pay is up to $100K per
year. Its current Acting Exec. Director, S. B. Woo, who is a volunteer
and 80-20's Founding President, aims to fade out.

80-20 plans to have 2 full time employees from then on.
They will assist an elected President, who is a volunteer and the Spokes-
person for 80-20.

Suzanna Lin, M.D., will continue to be the Special Assistant
to either the President or the Executive Director, depending on 80-20's
needs.

80-20 seeks a full-time Executive Director, with experience in elections,
political campaigns, and civil rights struggles. A record of serving the
Asian Am community in thankless jobs and multi-tasking is also
important. The salary will be up to $100,000 per year. Some benefits are
included. For those who are interested, please send your applications to
sbw@udel.edu. The application should include a cover letter stating why
one is interested in the job, how much one knows about 80-20, and a
resume. Three References are welcome but not necessary until later.

A very attractive part of the job is that the individual will work out
of his/her own home, since 80-20 is a cyber space organization. The non-
monetary, psychological compensation one derives from the job could be
extremely rewarding.

A person who has been a member of 80-20 for many years is preferred*.

The job requires absolute devotion. The welfare of the Asian American
community and the political needs don't wait for office hours. If a task
requires attention, the Executive Director attends to it regardless whether
it is in the evenings, weekends or during vacations in the USA or abroad.
The hours could be long and the requirement for performance is extremely

*A numerical example demonstrating the power of a bloc vote
Two candidates run against each other in a political race, which for
simplicity is assumed to have two constituent groups only. One group has
one million votes (8%) and the other has 11 million votes (92%). Candidate
A, a novice, courts the larger group. When the ballots are open, candidate
A wins the larger community by the ratio of 52/48. The margin of
difference is 4%. Since the larger group has 11 millions votes, 4% of 11
million votes provides a winning margin of 440,000 votes to candidate A.
His opponent, candidate B, is a seasoned politician. She courts the smaller
group knowing its ability to deliver a bloc vote in the ratio of 8 to 2, as the
black and Jewish communities can. B wins that community by a ratio of
80 to 20. The difference between 80% and 20% is 60%. 60% of 1 million
votes is 600,000 votes. As a result, candidate B wins the election by
(600,000 - 440,000) or 160,000 votes. Astounding? Does that knowledge
empower you?

A reader wrote in

After 80-20 sent out "3 lessons from Vincent Chin," the following
thoughtful letter came in.

"Dear S.B.

Thank you for bringing out Vincent Chin's tragedy to remind
us how fragile we are as Asian Americans without a group voice.
("80-20 didn't exist at the time," adds S. B. Woo.) Vincent
Chin's tragedy left a scar on every Chinese Americans' soul.
The lesson at the time of occurrence is that "You are nothing."
In the US, if one killed a cat or dog, one might be punished
more severely than the Ebins, the father and the son.

Years before the Vincent Chin's case (in late 60's) a
Lithuanian sailor was abducted from a US Coast Guard vessel
by USSR guards docked next to the US ship in the open ocean. The
incident raised hell in the US, as our sovereignty was violated. But
it was Lithuanian Americans' GROUP voice which brought him
back to the US.

Vincent Chin was the scapegoat for the failing American auto
industry dwarfed by the competitive Japanese automakers.
Now with the failing Wall Street fiscal management and the
high unemployment rate plus the exchange rate war between
the US & China, I have reason to fear once again, we might become
the scapegoat for those who have failed or are incapable of taking
care of their own financial responsibility.

Be alert and vigilant. Let nobody become the second Vincent
Chin.
