Your vote as a Delegate to 80-20's Endorsement Convention (EC)
may just decide who will be the next US president. Here is why.

First: In 2000, 80-20 endorsed Gore getting 70% of the APA voters
in CA to go for Gore, and Bush lost CA by 12 points. In 2004, if 80-20
endorses the Dem. nominee again, CA will likely remain safely in the
Democrats' column. On the other hand, if 80-20 will endorse Bush,
Bush will probably need to make up 4 points ONLY in order to win CA.
California will become a hotly contested state! If Bush wins CA's 55
electoral votes, the race for the White House will be over for the
Democrats.

Second: YOU can be one of the less than 100 Delegates to 80-20's
EC, if you are a dues-paying member, run for a Delegate position and win.
Whom 80-20 will endorse is decided by those Delegates.

Once, you become a Delegate to 80-20's EC, your one vote in the
EC will probably have more impact on the making of our next
president than sum of 50,000 votes cast by other citizens.

Reader's Reaction To The Yao Ming Episode

80-20 received at least 150 positive e-mails from its Yao Ming series
of 3 emails. The reaction to the first mass email was mixed. After 80-
20's second e-mail, a typical response reads as 1) below. 80-20 is very
heartened by the great response from every corner of our nation.

1) A Typical Response: Hi Dr. Woo: Happy New Year! I just want
to congratulate you and your organization for the great job you have
done for the Asian community!! It's about time for the Chinese and the
Asian community as a whole to have a strong voice such as yours to
speak up for them. I have passed on information about 80-20 to all my
friends and associates and strongly encouraged them to join. We thank
you and appreciate for all you and your staff have done for the Asian

2) From Many Supporters: Chinaman is NOT analogous to Englishman
and Frenchman. Try calling them Englandman and Franceman, and

3) From a Korean American: My name is Jason Kwah. I am
an Asian Pacific American of Korean descent living in New York
City. I would just like to commend you for a job well done in
handling this incident. I'll admit that upon first hearing about it, I
thought it might have been blown a bit out of proportion. However,
you provided a thorough explanation that helped me understand the
importance of addressing this incident. I can also tell that it was
handled with a great deal of tactfulness and respect, given Steve

4) From anonymous: Initially, I did not appreciate your emails. I
wondered why I was being sent these emails, and treated them as spam.
However, the story of Ling Sing was quite striking... and I read up more
about it on the internet. I still have mixed feelings about such issues
being publicized, because sometimes, as in this case, a person did not
know that the word "chinaman" was derogatory.. and indeed compared
to other terms like "n**ger", it does seem very mild.... but I am also
happy that you are taking this effort to make us all better informed. We
must be educated about the kind of tyranny and terrorism that was

Yao Ming/Next US President/SARS

On 5/10/2003, at the height of SARS scares, 5 Asian Am.
teachers were turned away by 2 NJ schools from fulfilling their
CONTRACTUAL obligations. Imagine if you are told to go home
from your work, because people of Asian descent are the prime
suspects owing to the SARS hysteria. Such a precedent must
NOT be allowed.
80-20 NEGOTIATED on the phone (not just writing a letter)
with the school superintendent to get 1) a public apology, 2) back
pay, 3) reinstitution of the program, and 4) a school district-wide
educational program to combat SARS hysteria.

(2) 80-20 Opens Your Path To Equal Opportunity:

All viable Democratic presidential candidates pledged in writing
that upon being the president they will enforce E.O. 11246 to
provide equal opportunity in workplaces for Asian Americans.
Currently it is enforced for all other Americans except us.
80-20 is confident that President Bush will soon sign it too.
At least, the National Chairman of AAPI for Bush/Cheney 2004,
John Tsu, agreed, as was reported in the 1/17/04 issue of The
World Journal.
In ten years, the number of APA Exec/Administrators is
estimated to increase by a factor of 3. The glass-ceiling

The N-gger word is no longer used against blacks. Words like
Chinaman, Jap & Chink will not be used against you with

PART II of Yao Ming Called A "Chinaxxx, "

TWO VERY DIFFERENT types of responses came to 80-20, after the earlier e-mail entitled "Yao Ming Called A Chinaxxx."

THE FIRST GROUP of responses were most positive. They thanked
80-20 for standing up for our community and its great effectiveness.

THE SECOND GROUP were from APAs who were puzzled over why
Chinaxxx was a bad term; some even accused 80-20 of being too
sensitive. A typical response was: "I was from China. I am a man.
What is wrong with being called a Chinaxxx? Why are Frenchman and
Englishman acceptable, but not Chinaxxx?"

Such questions probably came mostly from first generation
immigrants. Their puzzlement is most understandable. 80-20 uses
this occasion to let our diverse community -- from the 1st to perhaps
the 6th generation immigrants – know why the term Chinaman is
derogatory.

The English language is defined by its dictionaries, not by
individuals. The most authoritative dictionary in English is Webster.
Webster (10th edition) defines
N-gger: a black person - usu. taken to be offensive;
Chinaman: Chinese - often taken to be offensive.

The term "Chinaxxx" has a long & sad history in this country.
Chinaman didn't have a bad connotation a long time ago. It was
used just like Englishman and Frenchman. However, in 1853,
conviction of killers for the murder of Ling Sing was OVERturned on
the grounds that testimony from the "INFERIOR CASTE OF PEOPLE WHO
WERE NON-CITIZENS, " should be thrown out. It meant that Chinese
testimony against the whites was not admissible. Once that legal
precedent was set, the whites learnt that they could terrorize Chinese
without fear of legal consequences. Numerous such incidents
happened. Thereafter, the phrase "not a Chinaxxx's chance" was
coined, meaning "not much of a chance." The word "Chinaxxx"
became an offensive term to Chinese Americans and probably to all
Chinese.

LETTER OF APOLOGY FROM MR. STEVE KERR:

Mr. Steven Kerr who reacted to his inadvertent mistake admirably
just requested that I publicize his letter of apology. He told me that
he has reached Yao Ming who has accepted his apology. His letter
which reached me this morning, after his verbal apology of yesterday
is shown below. I hope that our entire community will now accept his
apology.

"Dear Mr. Woo,
First of all, let me apologize again for my mistake during
Monday night's telecast. I have felt horrible all day long today
knowing that I offended many people. I assure you I was
unaware that my choice of words was inappropriate, and in no
way did I use it maliciously. As I mentioned earlier, I was using
the term the same way I would use 'Frenchman' or 'Englishman',
and I was totally unaware that the word I used is a derogatory
one dating back to the 19th century.

I am ashamed of what happened, especially since I take great
pride in being extremely open minded and tolerant. I have
spent a good part of my life living in foreign countries and I
have respect for all cultures, races and religions. My sister in law
is Chinese American, and my brother in law is a respected
Chinese history scholar at Cambridge University in England.
One of my best friends, in fact, is also Chinese American. I called
them all today to explain what happened.

Anyway, I have already planned to apologize to Yao Ming, and
I will attempt to call him today. As you know he is a difficult
person to reach, but I will do my best to talk to him, or at least
to his interpreter Cxxxx Pxxx. I will let you know if I'm able to
contact Yao Ming. In the meantime, I wish you the best of luck
and I apologize again for this matter.

Also, thank you very much for not making this a public issue.
I realize that you have every right to do so, and the fact that
You have not is saving me great embarrassment. Thank you so
much for that. I will do my best to let people know that the
phrase I used is inappropriate because of the context in which it
was used in the past.

Yao Ming Called A Chinaxxx

Yesterday, Turner Broadcaster Steve Kerr described Ming Yao as a "7'6" Chinaman," during the Houston versus Memphis game. 80-20 induced a sincere apology within 3 hours.

(1) At 3:00 p.m. today, 80-20 obtained concrete evidence that Steve Kerr, a TNT broadcaster, described Ming Yao as a "7'6" Chinaman." At 4:15 p.m., 80-20- staff Jing-Li Yu left words with the secretary of TNT CEO, Philip I. Kent, that 80-20 President S. B. Woo wanted to be called regarding the incident.

At 5:45 p.m., TNT Senior VP Jeff Banky and Broadcaster Steve Kerr called S. B. at his home and apologized profusely. They asked him to in turn convey their apologies to the Asian American community. It seemed obvious that Kerr didn't know that Chinaman, unlike Frenchman and Englishman, was a derogatory term. S.B. accepted the apology with the condition that Mr. Kerr also called Ming Yao to apologize. S.B. also requested that Mr. Kerr to publicize, whenever appropriate, the impropriety of using derogatory terms in describing minorities. Mr. Kerr agreed. 80-20 TURNED A NEGATIVE CASE INTO A POSITIVE ONE IN 2 HOURS AND 45 MINUTES.

(2) A couple of months ago, General Wesley Clark also inadvertently used Chinaman together with the term Frenchman in an radio interview. Upon an e-mail from S. B., Gen. Clark called S.B. at his home to apologize. SB was impressed with General Clark's sincerity and his sensitivity towards minority concerns. ANOTHER INSTANCE THAT 80-20 TURNS A NEGATIVE EVENT TO A POSITIVE ONE.

(3) After learning about General Clark's apology, An Army Major e- mailed SB to let him know that a terrain in the Army map of Fort Irwin in the California Mojave Desert is designated "Chinaman's Hat." Upon learning that S. B. requested Julia Wan, a new Board Member to work with the Army to delete the name. A month ago, Brigadier General Joseph Fil, Jr. e-mailed Julia stating "The computerized data base from which they (the maps in question) are produced has already been changed, and no longer contains the Chinaman's Hat moniker. " YET ANOTHER HAPPY CASE HANDLED BY 80-20 ON BEHALF OF OUR COMMUNITY.

If a Democrat is elected the president in 2004, the federal
government will employ its immense power through Executive
Order 11246 to help Asian Americans break the glass ceiling. We
estimate that in 10 years the number of Asian Americans in the
Executive/Administrators rank will increase by a factor of 3 in
all mainstream corporations/ firms/ universities/ institutions/
governments.

Unfortunately, Mr. George W. Bush, the only Republican running
for president in 2004, has not yet responded to 80-20's questionnaire.

As a result, 80-20 urges Asian Americans to

(a) vote for any of the above 8 candidates during the Democratic
PRIMARY elections, taking into account their promptness in
answering the questionnaire
(b) withhold financial and other forms of support from Mr.
Bush's 2004 campaign until he has responded with yes/yes/yes to
80-20's questionnaire.

If Mr. Bush also answers yes/yes/yes, then, whoever gets elected in
Nov., our children will get equal opportunity in workplaces.

So hold firm. Don't contribute to Mr. Bush, UNTIL he responds
positively. Any APA who gives to his campaign before he responds
positively is hurting OUR CHILDREN'S chance to win equal opportunity!
PASS THAT MESSAGE.

The above rules do NOT apply in the GENERAL election. After
each major party has elected a nominee, 80-20 will hold an
Endorsement Convention. Delegates to the Convention will be elected
from and by our dues-paying members. The composition of Delegates
shall be 1/3 Republicans, 1/3 Independents and 1/3 Democrats. The
endorsement criteria shall be DEEDS done by either party in the

Fact 1: Dean & Kucinich have helped us. Dean has money; leads in

Convention where a nominee is elected. Kucinich needs money.

have NOT helped yet. They all want to do better in Iowa or New
Hampshire. Many are aiming to defeat Dean in CA. Edwards currently
has a small lead in CA.

Party. He has Money. He doesn't need votes in the PRIMARY; he
needs votes in the GENERAL.

(1) If you work in the academic world, the ratio of [administrators /
(faculty + professional)] for APAs will increase from the current
0.057 to the nat'l average of 0.150, in about 10 yrs. It means there
will be 6000 ADDITIONAL full-time APA administrators. Rising tide
lifts all ships. With more APA administrators, all APAs working in
universities, from janitors to instructors to secretaries will
benefit.

(2) If you work for corporations, law and accounting firms, federal
or state governments, the increase in the APA ratio in
[(Executive/management)/ (peoples just below the manager level)]
will increase EVEN MORE. Suppose you are young and not even
close to the management level yet, still you'll benefit because
rising ride lifts all ships.

(3) If you work in Korea town or Little Manila, or are with the ethnic
media, or own your own business or in a business that
has little apparent connection with the mainstream society, WILL
YOU STILL BENEFIT?

Definitely. With 3 times as many APA executives & managers,
there will be more money in our community. Hence, more will be
spent in ethnic localities. More ads will be bought in ethnic media
resulting in higher pay for ethnic reporters. The Silicon Valley
entrepreneurs will have more APA CEOs in the Fortune 500
companies to call on for venture capitals and/or contracts. All
in all, it is the same cause and effective: RISING TIDE LIFTS ALL
SHIPS.

GOOD & BAD NEWS! The good news is that Gov. Dean is the odds on
candidate to be the Democratic nominee. So we may have about 50-50
chance to have 11246 enforced for us after the 2004 election.

The bad news is that Candidate Bush and the 7 other Democratic
candidates have NOT signed up yet. We should seize the golden
opportunity of the presidential election and make it 100% certain to
have 11246 enforced for us.

80-20 Questionnaire To All Presidential Candidates

On 12/1, 80-20 sent the following questionnaire to all
presidential candidates -- the 9 Democrats plus President Bush.

80-20's Presidential Candidate Questionnaire:

"With liberty and justice for all." Thus ends our pledge of
allegiance to the flag with a ringing commitment to all citizens.
Unfortunately, liberty and justice remain an unrealized dream for
Asian Pacific Americans. A low glass-ceiling hangs instead over our
heads, denying us the opportunity to rise to the top of our
professions, just as it hung over women and blacks until recently.

Statistical evidence, mostly gathered by government sponsored
studies, shows a dismal picture: APAs have only one-third the
opportunity of all other Americans to "rise to the top," in the
academic world, in corporations, or even in federal government.

To illustrate, let's look at the situation in universities, the
so-called bastion of idealism in our society. University administrators
are recruited almost exclusively from the ranks of faculty and
professionals already employed in universities. Hence the ratio of
[administrators / (faculty + professionals)], broken down to races, is
a
measure of the opportunity enjoyed by American citizens of different
races. Nationwide, for full-time staff that ratio for blacks (non-
Hispanic) is 0.199. That is, for every 100 black faculty and
professionals there are 20 black administrators. The ratio for Native
American is 0.169; for white (non-Hispanic) is 0.157; and for Hispanic
is 0.143. However, it is only 0.055 for Asian American. For resident
aliens, it is 0.017.

situation in the corporate world is worse, much worse. All Asian
American CEOs of Fortune 500 companies, with one exception, started
the companies themselves.

Therefore, we, Asian Pacific Americans, wish to know
YOUR ANSWERS TO THE FOLLOWING QUESTIONS:
(1) If elected, will you direct the Labor Secretary to hold public
hearings regarding the validity of the huge amount of statistical data
strongly suggesting discriminatory practices against Asian Pacific
Americans in workplaces today?

(2) If the data were shown valid, will you issue a directive to the
Labor Department asking it to focus on enforcing Executive Order
11246 on behalf of Asian Pacific Americans, since in the past similar
efforts have already been made on behalf of women and other
minorities?

(3) Two years after you have issued a directive described in item 2,
will you meet with a group of Asian Pacific American leaders, put
together jointly by 80-20 and the Labor Department, to review the
progress in extending equal opportunity to Asian Pacific Americans?

Heavyweight Republicans Raising Funds for 80-20

Gareth C. C. Chang of Los Angeles will be 80-20's first ever
Chairman of the Fundraising Committee. Other members of the
committee include Kenneth Fong, Hsing Kung, both of Silicon Valley,
CA, Kam Liu of Chicago, and Charles Cheng Zhang of Michigan. This
is a very strong team. Brief bios of the team members are presented
below.

Gareth Chang, a heavyweight Republican and a long time resident
of Los Angles who moved to Hong Kong, has recently moved back to
LA. After 20 years with McDonnell Douglas as Corporate Vice
President, he became the Corporate Senior VP of Hughes Electronics
Corp. and President of Hughes Electronics International. When he
moved to Hong Kong, he was the first Chairman of the American
Chamber of Commerce; Chairman and CEO of STAR TV Group. He is
now Chairman & Managing Partner of GC3 & Associates International
LLC, an investment and venture management group. He is also a
member of the Committee of 100.

Gareth Chang said, "I am really impressed with 80-20's political
effectiveness. That is why I decided to do my share to help. I am a
Republican who has always placed our community's interests before
party considerations."

Kenneth Fong, another heavyweight Republican and C-100
member, is a noted venture capitalist in biotechnology. He is also the
Chair of 80-20's Nomination Committee. He helped put together this
strong Fundraising team for 80-20. He and his wife, Pam, contribute
$10K to 80-20 annually.

Hsing Kung has built up companies in Silicon Valley and sold
them. He is currently the senior vice president of Opnext. He is also
the president of South Bay Voter Registration Association in San
Francisco, which is an Affiliate of 80-20.

Kam Liu is a very successful businessman in Chicago.

Charles C. Zhang is a certified financial planner, recognized in
many trade magazine articles. He is a top financial advisor with
American Express and the author of Make Yourself A Millionaire,
McGraw-Hill, 2003.

willingness to toil in order to build up our community’s political

General Clark Phoned 80-20 President S. B. Woo

General Clark, one of the 2 leading Democratic presidential
candidates, phoned 80-20 President S. B. Woo at home last night to
apologize for his use of the word "Chinaman." Here is the
background.

On 11/03, Gen. Clark was interviewed by The National Public
Radio. He said, "I am a fair person.... But if somebody from Russia does
something right, or a Chinaman does something right, or even a
Frenchman, I'm going to say they did something right. Same thing with
the Republicans."

That statement was reported to 80-20 by one of its 650,000
supporters. Although it's obvious from the context that Gen. Clark
didn't mean to use "Chinaman" in a negative sense, Woo thought
Gen. Clark should know that Chinaman was a derogatory term. Woo,
therefore, e-mailed one of Clark's strong Korean Am. supporters,
Richard Choi Bertsch, asking him to make the general aware of his
faux pas and consider apologizing to the APA community.

To Woo's great surprise, Gen. Clark phoned him at home at 5:40
p.m. yesterday to PERSONALLY DELIVER THE APOLOGY. Such a
gesture seems a very positive reflection on Clark's leadership quality.

In their chat, Clark also expressed strong support for helping
the APAs break the glass ceiling. He stated that if elected President, he
will order the Labor Department to enforce Executive Order 11246,
should a Congressional hearing or a Labor Department study
conclude that there is a glass ceiling above APAs. E.O. 11246 is a
very powerful law that has been enforced on behalf of African Ams. and
women, but NOT APAs, to help them break glass ceilings. Equal
enforcement of that law will be 80-20's single crucial goal for
campaign season 2004.

Gen. Clark's verbal promise makes him the FIRST presidential
candidate to do so. 80-20 will soon write to BOTH Republican and
Democratic presidential candidates seeking their written promises to

Note that the two leading Dem. candidates, Gov. Dean and Gen
Clark have both made sincere effort to reach out to our community

Lot of Good News:

(1) MORE POLITICALLY MATURE:
Many APAs used to think that a bloc vote is an extremist's method
to win equal opportunity for themselves. Well, David Broder, often
considered the Dean of American Political Reporters, just wrote an
article describing a bloc vote as "one of the unnoticed glories of
American life -- the entry of yet another immigrant group
into the mainstream of the nation's politics." "That is how
the Irish, the Italians, the Poles and other 19th-century immigrants
became" equal partners in the making of the American Dream. See

More APAs will follow 80-20's bloc vote in 2004. We are
more mature politically.

(2) A CLOSE CONTEST HEIGHTENS OUR IMPORTANCE:
"Bush may be able to win in 2004 without winning CA.
But Democrats cannot possibly win the next P.E.
without winning CA." -- a belief shared by most experts.

80-20 is the strongest in CA that has 55 electoral votes. In 2000, 80-
20 delivered 70% of the APA votes to Gore whom it endorsed, according

Up till recently, the most optimistic estimate of APA voters in CA
is 6.5%. The 2000 Census says it is actually 7.4%. Source: Current
Population Survey, November 2000. In 2004, the % will easily top 8%.

GOP lost CA by 11 points in 2000. If a bloc of APA voters of 6%
will change from voting Dem. to voting for Bush. It'll be a swing of 12
points! That is how pivotal we are in the 2004 presidential election.

APAs May Face Nasty Racial Mess Caused By David Chang

A Philadelphia radio jockey is now playing "Chinkopoly" on the air as
a "pay back" for "Ghettopoly," the creation of David Chang. See [A]
below.

Another radio station 101.5 FM, location unknown, was alleged to not
only have made derogatory statements about APAs but also "badly
humiliated" Asians who called in to protest. See [B] below. Is it also
caused by "Ghettopoly?" Investigating.

WHAT GOES AROUND COMES AROUND. That was why 80-20 took
immediate action against Ghettopoly so that it has the credibility to
FIGHT AND PROTECT YOU now.

80-20 has already approached the leadership of NAACP regarding
"Ghettopoly" and the action 80-20 has take against "Ghettopoly"
precisely for the purpose of preventing such conflict between
minorities. 80-20 will also do its best not to let the aftermath created
by David Chang fester into a bad feeling between the Africa Am.

Radio jockeys uttering racial slurs against APAs ARE VERY DIFFICULT

[A] "Chinkopoly" which 80-20 didn't know about until last night

Dear Lynn:

On behalf of the Asian American Journalists Association of
Philadelphia, as well as the Asian American community of the Delaware
Valley, I would like to express my concerns over recent comments made
by one of your station's hosts.

Last week, it was announced that a racist and crude board game called
"Ghettopoly" had been released, causing a stir among many
communities of color. It made stereotypical and inflammatory
references to the African-American, Hispanic, and Asian American
communities. The creator of the game, David Chang, is an Asian-
American.

However, rather than looking at the across the board offensive nature of
the game, Miss Jones, "Jonesy in the A.M.", chose to focus on how an
Asian American could make a game about blacks and Latinos. She
proceeded to create her own game, "Chinkopoly," urging callers to
make degrading imitations of Asians and using old stereotypes as
"properties" for her game. ....

We are strongly asking for a public on-air apology from Miss Jones and
are likely to urge a boycott of Philly 103.9 if one is not issued
immediately. We would also like the chance to have Miss Jones speak
at a town-hall meeting we will set up specifically to address how the
board game and Miss Jones' response to the game have heightened
tensions among communities of color.

Earlier this week, once again the two bozos from 101.5FM made
degrading racial comments against the Asian American community in
the late afternoon on their show. It was as offensive as the nasty letter

CALL FOR ACTION

80-20 stands with civil rights organizations in condemning the
"Ghettopoly" game. This game perpetrates harmful stereotypes against
African Americans, which is not a matter of humor, as the game
creator, David Chang, may suggest.

The game's stated objective is "to become the richest playa through
stealing, cheating and fencing stolen properties." Game pieces include a
cannabis leaf, crack cocaine, and a gun. Properties are not houses and
hotels as is the case in "Monopoly," but crack houses and public
housing projects. The object of the game is to build as many projects
and crack houses as possible while avoiding jail, car jacking, addiction
or death.

The game not only perpetuates massive stereotypes along racial lines, it
insults African American history - particularly Martin Luther King Jr.
and Malcolm X, who are both lambasted with insensitivity. For
example, "Martin Luthor King, Jr.," intentionally misspelled in the
game, is shown scratching his crotch and saying, "I have an itch." The
game also plays on Asian American stereotypes with an Asian brothel
as one of the spaces on the board.

This game is not meant for people to "laugh at themselves," as David
Chang, said. At a price of $32 a game, it can hardly be said to be
targeted at the ghetto demographic. It pokes fun at poverty, at crime,
at black history and at living in city slums.

David Chang immigrated to America from Taiwan when he was 8. His
father owned a Chinese restaurant. He is a graduate of the Univ. of
Rochester, and lives in PA. It is embarrassing that an Asian American,
who probably himself has experienced a lot of stereotypes is now the
creator of a such game perpetrating stereotypes against another
community. Since he is a member of our community, MAY BE HE'LL

Giving $ to Politicians is NOT Always Good

The campaign season has started. Let's learn a lesson from the
"campaign finance scandal" of 1996, which the NY Times termed "The
Asia Gate."

APAs gave about $4,000,000 to the Democratic Party, and
probably the same or more to GOP. IN RETURN, WE GOT TRASHED.
Let's review the facts:

A] From 1996-98, the image of our entire community was tarnished
for the misdeeds of a few. Our image as the "perpetual foreigners"
whose loyalty to America is questionable was greatly enforced.

B] After the scandal attracted media attention, Democrats &
Republicans competed to distance themselves from ALL Asian
Americans. They took $8 million from us; they should at least have
spoken up and pointed out that the misdeeds were done by about a
dozen corrupt APAs ONLY. Where were our community's fundraising
leaders, when we needed their political connections to get the
politicians to speak on our behalf?

Let's learn the lesson. Before giving generously to political
leaders, ask them what they will do for the APA community in return.
If their answers sound good, ask them to do some of the deeds for us
NOW. Otherwise, most'll simply take your money and forget you.

We still have glass ceilings above us and our children. We still
don't enjoy equal justice if you'll remember the Wen Ho Lee case.
Measure what you have given financially to 80-20 and what it has
done for our community and what you are planning to give to the
presidential candidates and what they have or will do for our
community.

Above all, spread words about "THE FOUR DON'TS" listed below:

DON'T give thousands of dollars just to get a picture with a
presidential candidate. Are we that shallow?
DON'T raise hundreds of thousands of dollars for a politician just
because the politician has flattered you. Are we that naive?
DON'T help those APA fundraisers who are always the FIRST to
organize fundraisers for politicians and the LAST to stand up to fight
for our community. Are we that forgetful or dumb or self-centered?

Sherry Zhang was 16 and the only intern who is still in high
school. She was on Voice of America twice and on A.M. 1300 radio
station of Los Angeles for about 30 minutes as our intern. She
recruited more members than 80-20 had expected, including one Life
Member. She returned 80% of her stipend back to 80-20, in spite of
80-20's repeated request for her NOT to do so.

Her last act as an intern was to VOLUNTARILY write out her intern
experience for the benefit of our next summer's intern. Why? She was
planning ahead for 80-20. She so cares for 80-20 to succeed, perhaps
because she learned from her internship how much our community
needs political awakening.

1. A Strong Will Is Important

I considered quitting the internship several times.

When I applied, I thought as the chief-in-editor of the newspaper
of my Chinese school, 3500 families (about 10,000 people) had heard
my name for years, so it wouldn't be difficult for me to achieve my
intern goal. However, after I sent emails to the 14 branch school
principals, only one school was willing to mention 80/20 to their
school list. Since the schools were restricted from participating in
political activities, I could not get an email list from them. My action
plan was ruined and I had to start from scratch. On my first day of
recruiting at Chinese school, three close friends of mine said "No, NO,
and NO to me. One couple I sat down with started screaming and
cursing at me. They made me cry because I had not been treated that
way for 16 years of my life. I considered quitting then. ......

These types of situations made me consider quitting the
internship. I would be ashamed if I quit. ....... I repeatedly said to
myself, "I will reach that goal." I should not break my promise. That's
my will."

..... This internship taught me to believe in hard work and
determination, but more importantly, I've seen just how important it
is to have great friends who believe in you. I'll be hosting a family
party at the end of this month to thank all my recruits. ..."

All of a sudden I felt 20 years younger. My face was
flushed & my heart full of hope. The APA community is
the LAST best in political clout among minorities. We,
therefore, need future political leaders who will be the

Gov. Dean & 2 Precedents Empowering Our Community

80-20 is proud to report that, thanks to YOU, it has set two
precedents helping to empower the APA community politically. Both
precedents were established this past weekend at 80-20's Luncheon in
Los Angeles in which Gov. Howard Dean was the keynote speaker.

(1) The Leading Democratic Presidential Candidate Keynoted
An 80-20 Fundraiser.

APAs raising funds for a presidential candidates is common. A
presidential candidates keynoting an APA fundraiser is
news. However, the latter is common in the mainstream
society. Therefore, inducing the same to happen in the APA
community is politically empowering.

(2) Governor Grey Davis of California Requested To Attend The
80-20 VIP Reception

APA organizations requesting the presence of the Governor at their
events is common. The Governor initiating a request to
drop by an APA event is news. To be sure Governor Davis'
request is possibly related to the pending "Recall" election in CA.
Nevertheless, Governor Davis would not have made the request, if
he didn't think that 80-20's event was significant.

Besides setting good political precedents, 80-20's fundraiser was
well attended. 300 plus people packed into a ballroom decorated
with a patriotic theme. Everything was in red, white and blue. A huge
crowd of ethnic and mainstream reporters followed Govs. Dean and
Davis when they arrived at the VIP Reception room. Camera were
flashing, The bright lights of TV cameras lit up half of the room. It
was a big morale booster for 80-20 supporters and it increased our war
chest for the presidential election next year.

Gov. Dean got a standing ovation before and after his speech.
Our supporters appreciated Gov. Dean's outreach to us that set a
wonderful precedent. He gave his usual campaign speech.
Afterwards, while interviewed by an ethnic TV crew he said, "Should I
be someone 80-20 would like to help, I would be very helpful to
80-20 because we would love to have your votes." In the next few
months, 80-20 will be seeking the views of all presidential candidates on
key APA issues, including those of the Gov. Dean and President Bush.

Why is 80-20's LA Event Significant?

Many APA individuals and organizations have done fundraisers for
presidential candidates. This event is the opposite. A presidential
candidate, perhaps the leading candidate, comes to an event where an
APA organization holds, not an annual convention, but a fundraiser.

It is significant for 2 major reasons.

First, it affirms 80-20's strong faith that if we, the APAs, get our acts
together, our political system will respond. When we have political
clout, we can win equal justice and equal opportunity in workplaces for
us and our children.

Second, Gov. Howard Dean, perhaps the leading Democratic presidential
candidate, by chartering a plane to come to LA just to make the 80-20
event is warmly reaching out to the APA community.

Talking about reaching out, we regret to inform you that President Bush
will not be coming. 80-20 appreciates the courtesy and careful
consideration extended to it by the White House scheduling office. All
of that may also be a sign of our community's growing clout.

The respected Institute of Corea American Studies is sponsoring a
Summer Symposium focusing on Korean Diaspora: Challenges Facing
the Korean Am. Community. S. B. Woo, President of 80-20, will address
the symposium at 10:55 a.m. on 8/9, (Sat.) for 45 minutes.

The location is Montgomery County community College, Science
Center Room 214, 340 Dekalb Pike, Blue Bell, PA 19422. The event is
from 9:30 a.m. to 6 p.m. Lunch is provided. Students pay $10 each.
Non-members pay $30 each. Jhoon Rhee, Grand Master & Father of
American Tae Kwon Do, will be among the other speakers.
