Faxes From Asian Ams To Sen. McCain

Faxes poured into Sen. McCain's headquarters. Asian Ams of all ethnicities, from afar and near, participated enthusiastically. All included the central message: "Without your positive reply, I/we will definitely vote for the Democratic nominee."

Beyond the central message, however, sentiments for Sen. McCain vary significantly. See below. The McCain campaign will see that it has MUCH TO LOSE by not replying to 80-20's questionnaire with all yeses.

Most who sent a fax were Independents (46%). Others were D (22%) and R(18%). Yet others didn't identify their party affiliations (14%).

I add a note to some quotes. Notes are shown in red. Apologies to all for not quoting your particular fax, owing to space limitation.

CALL TO ACTION

80-20 will soon endorse a presidential candidate who shares Asian Am. concerns. However, Republican nominee Sen. John McCain has not yet replied to 80-20's questionnaire in spite of great efforts by 80-20 to reach out to him.

80-20 worked with 3 great Republicans asking Sen. McCain to respond positively. They are US Sen. Daniel Evans of Washington (retired), Cong. Mike Castle of Delaware, and C. C. Yin of CA who raised $60K for McCain when he polled only 4th among the GOP presidential candidates. 80-20's questionnaire asks all presidential candidates to give Asian Ams iron-clad commitments to help us achieve equal opportunity in workplaces and in judicial appointments.

Although Sen. McCain is disappointing when compared with Sens. Obama & Clinton, 80-20 sees a continued effort to induce him to reply as a win-win situation for now. His positive reply would guarantee that the next president, whether a D or a R, will enforce Exec. Order 11246 for Asian Am. in workplaces -- a win for us. Proposed Bylaws amendments Needs your approval

Important Proposed Bylaws Changes

Democratic nations & organizations are RULED BY LAW. 80-20 is one of such orgs. Soon, 80-20's Board shall submit 4 Bylaws amendments to you for approval. A Bylaws amendment for an organization is equivalent to amending the Constitution of a nation. Hence, our proposed 4 amendments are of the utmost importance to all who care for 80-20.

Prior to a vote, 80-20's members must be given a full month's written advance notice, as required by Article 10 of 80-20's Bylaws. This is so that members will have adequate time to consider the proposed changes and to organize "support for" or "objection to" the amendments. All 4 amendments deal with Article 3, entitled "Organization." After operating under the existing article 3 for several years, your Board feels that the proposed amendments will help make 80-20 a better organization. The 4 amendments are appended at the end of this email.

i) vote on Bylaws amendments and all other elections,

Proposed Amendments

1) Amend Article 3.2.3 by replacing its third sentence: "No director shall serve more than two complete consecutive terms." with the following sentences: "Directors can serve up to four (4) consecutive terms, so long as he or she has substantially contributed while serving as a board member, and that the re-elections of board members are contested."

2) Add a new sub-article 3.5:

3.5 Guiding Principle In Taking Actions
Whenever feasible, 80-20 shall try to create a win-win situation in its dealings with other individuals and organizations. In dealing with organizations working for the same goals, 80-20 shall be patient and tolerant. In dealing with others that are damaging or have damaged our effort to achieve equal opportunity and justice, if the entity repeatedly refuses to agree to a win-win solution, 80-20, being a political action committee, shall apply strong and strategic pressure to counter the other side's principal interests. If and when a satisfactory solution is reached, 80-20 shall retrospectively make the other side a winner, or appear to be a winner.

3) Add a new sub-article 3.6:

3.6 Prohibition
Until Dec. 31, 2016 or a membership exceeding 10,000, whichever comes first, 80-20 shall not take any position in US foreign policies and/or foreign matters, except when it may impact upon its goal to achieve equal opportunity and justice for Asian Americans. The decision to invoke the exception must be approved by 3/4 (75%) of the entire Board. However, related decisions and actions subsequent to the approval of the exemption shall be governed by the Robert's Rules of Order only.

4) Add a new sub-article 3.2.6:

3.2.6 Board Communication Protocol and Behavior Guidelines:
Members of the Board shall behave professionally at all times, so as to effectively promote and advance the goals and images of the organization, both within and without. This includes but is not limited to the following cases:

a. The Board shall keep the internal communications of the organization strictly among the Board members, unless it is explicitly approved otherwise by the Board. These include Board and Executive Committee e-mail messaging of important and sensitive organizational topics and issues.

b. Members of the Board shall be cognizant of their roles thoughtfully carry out their responsibilities in a manner that is consistent with advancing the goals, interests, and public image of 80-20.

Is affirmative action good or bad?

For years, the Asian Am. community has debated that question. It hasn't been settled. Reason? We asked the wrong question. The question was too general. Here is my attempt.

Affirmative action was NOT applied uniformly to all Americans. It was applied to blacks, Hispanics, Native Indians and women, but not Asian Ams. Why? The implementation of AF was left to the Labor Dept. All past and current Labor Secretaries have knowingly bypassed Asian Ams!!!

Given the above knowledge, specific questions about AF can be answered easily.

1) Is affirmative action good or bad for blacks, Hispanics, Native Americans and women?

Of course, it's GOOD for all of them. Before 1965, the year when Exec Order 11246 was issued to enforce affirmative action, there were practically NO managers among blacks, Hispanics, Native Ams. and women. Now there are so many. Many are indeed CEOs of Fortune 500 companies. We are glad for them.

2) Is affirmative action good or bad for Asian Ams.?

As it is now, our adults do NOT get the advantage of affirmation action in workplaces while our children gets the disadvantage of affirmation action in admission to first tier universities. Of course, it has been BAD for Asian Ams.

3) How will 80-20 make affirmative action good for us also?

80-20 is now working hard on Sen. McCain to give the same commitment. A number of very high ranking Republican elected officials are helping, although not a single Republican elected Asian American official has offered to assist us yet. 80-20, Chinese Americans and CNN‏

You haven't heard from 80-20 for a while. However, as usual 80-20 has been working for you, taken actions, and gotten results. We were waiting till emotion has ebbed and the long term interest of the Asian Am. community comes back into focus.

(A) 80-20's Effectiveness Regarding The Cafferty Statement

After Cafferty made his #@$!*& statement, 80-20 President Kathleen To emailed him on April 14 to express 80-20's "deep concern." She asked Cafferty "to clarify" whether his words "were not in any way intended to cast an aspersion on the millions of patriotic Chinese Americans," On the same day, Cafferty replied and went on air to make the same statement and told us when it'll be on air.

Had he not clarified, 80-20 would have mounted a campaign with all its resources. Dire negative statements on one component of Asian Ams. casts aspersion on all Asian Americans.

However, since his statement is about the Chinese government, we figured that it'd best left to the Chinese government to handle, not that we agreed with the statement.

Please let your emotion ebb and then ponder if 80-20 has done the right thing that is amazingly effective. Also note that 80-20 is an Asian Am. organization, not a Chinese American organization.

(B) 80-20's Traditional Policy:
Not to take positions on US foreign policy and foreign matters, although we insist that we have the rights to do so.

Why? For two good reasons.

First, Asian Americans have come from many native lands with different histories. Taking positions on foreign matters could be detrimental to the unity of the Asian American community.

Second, speaking frankly, we are not yet equal citizens of America. We would be the most vulnerable in taking positions on US foreign policy. It is best that we "keep our powder dry" and fight for our equal opportunity in workplaces and equal justice in the US courts first. 3 Inspiring AsAm Political Role Models & Other Items

Three Asian American Political Role Models

Gordon Quan, Chris Lu and Ted Lieu are Asian Am. political role models.

Gordon, former Houston City Council Member and a very successful lawyer, endorsed Sen. Clinton. Chris Lu, Legislative Director of Obama's senate office on loan to the Obama campaign, is naturally for Sen. Obama. Yet, they are both our role models.

Gordon and Chris represented their respective candidates in negotiating with S. B. Woo regarding 80-20's questionnaires. They were both extremely loyal to their respective candidates. Yet, they also cared deeply about the grievances of Asian Americans having been denied equal opportunity. So how did they solve their dilemmas? They worked hard in finding a win-win situation with S.B. that will get their respective candidates votes while ensuring huge gains in equal opportunity for Asian Ams., if one of them gets into the White House.

Ted Lieu, Chair of California Asian Am. Caucus, California State Assembly, also endorsed Sen. Obama. We had minor run-ins against each other when I pressed Ted, perhaps too hard, to get Obama to reply with all yeses to 80-20's questionnaire last January. However, after a string of 10 primary victories by Sen. Obama, placing Obama is an apparent advantageous position in the presidential contest, Ted sent me a magnanimous email that really touched me:

Dear SB,
" . . .regardless of who the eventual nominee is, I look forward to helping you make sure our next President honors the commitments made to you and 80-20 . . . --Ted"

Wow! That is how caring and noble they all are.

80-20 has begun to work on Sen. McCain's reply to its questionnaire with all yeses. Will there be such Asian Am. Republican political leaders?

The dawn of a new era in AsAm politics has arrived. 80-20 salutes those 3 role models and others like them.

Audrey Magazine

Audrey Magazine is an upscale magazine for AsAm women celebrating its 5th anniversary. In its April/May issue, it gave a carefully researched & detailed report on the political clout of Asian Ams in the 2008 election. It's written by Jack d'Annibale, whose title is "Run. Win. Lead. -- In an historic election, AAs may be finding their voices.

Keep Our Eyes on the Prize

The 2008 presidential election will prove to be an important chapter in our quest for justice and equality for Asian Americans. The leadership team at 80-20 asked all of the presidential candidates to answer "yes" to six questions that have been formulated to demonstrate their commitment to specific and measurable progress in fair employment and promotion opportunities for all Asian Americans. If a promise is broken, the breach will be measurable for all to see and we shall hold accountable those who break their promise with a longer memory than an elephant and with more tenacity than a donkey.

It has taken a lot of hard work for us to get to this point; we must all keep our eyes on the prize. Our strength is derived from our unity of action. 80-20 has a clear strategy and tested tactics. Our common goal is to secure what is rightfully ours as citizens of our great nation. We could disagree on tactical details but let there be no doubt that we are brothers and sisters fighting for a common dream. Let it be remembered that we are asking to right a wrong that is long overdue. We are not asking for any undue advantage for ourselves at the expense of society. Society will change only when there is both push and pull. The tide of history may push us forward but we must also do the pulling ourselves. That is the basis of our bloc vote.

CNN airs OUR view on AsAm cohesiveness tonight

CNN will air our views on the Asian American political cohesiveness tonight. Please watch.

Thanks to the 2100 doers who signed the petition and took the time to leave 900 comments with CNN expressing our disappointment, CNN has responded positively to our request.

As the petition has requested, CNN will present a more balanced report that will include the rise of political cohesiveness within the Asian American community tonight. It'll be on CNN's Anderson Cooper 360, "Race and Gender." The show time for the three different time zones in the US will be:
10pm ET/ 9pm CT/ 7pm PT.

Gary Tuchman who reported in the earlier 2-minute segment that outraged us was very cordial, when he and I interacted. He interviewed me for about 30 minutes. As expected it'll be reduced to about 1 minute or less when aired.

Since the cutting and pasting power rests with CNN, we'll reserve our final judgment until we've seen the program. I believe that the program will devote about 10 minutes to discussing Asian American's 3 to 1 bloc vote for Sen. Clinton, near the end of the 1-hour program.

Congratulations! It is another demonstration of what a politically cohesive Asian American community can achieve. -- get our equal citizenship and be an integral part of America.

Wow. A Victorious Bloc Vote in California!

History was made. Last night, in California the political cohesiveness of our community was proven.

Here is what exit polls taken by CNN*, NY Times* and Google* found:
Senator Clinton lost to Obama among whites by a small margin and lost 1 to 4 among black voters. So how could she gain "the decisive California win?" It is because

"Hispanics voted 2 to 1 or 66/33 for her last night, although polls a week ago showed an even stronger 4 to 1 support. However, Asian Americans under the leadership of 80-20 and its affiliates organized and delivered a bloc vote of 3 to 1 or 75/25 to her."

Last night's vote signals the arrival of a new era in Asian American Politics. Let the word go forth that we've learned how to reward political leaders who share our rightful concerns, and punish those who don't.

80-20 wishes to thank in particular our college students and young professionals. While that age group had predominantly supported Sen. Obama for his theme of change and his oratorical skills nationwide, Asian Am. youth responded unselfishly to 80-20's call for unity and voted for Sen. Clinton in California. They showed exceptional willingness to sacrifice self for the good of the entire community. We salute them.

We need to get ready for the next battles. We need to induce the Republican Nominee to reply to our questionnaire with all yeses. We need a great war chest to deliver a national Asian Am. bloc vote to the next president of USA**.

Sen. Obama Replied with all YESES

After negotiations between 80-20 and the Obama campaign, 80-20 has agreed to modify the wording of two questions in its questionnaire. With these modifications, the Obama campaign has agreed to answer “yes” to all of the questions in the questionnaire. 80-20 appreciates the Obama campaign’s efforts to reach an amicable solution and applauds the campaign for reaffirming its strong commitment to increasing the number of Asian Americans in the federal judiciary and the enforcement of Executive order 11246 to ensue equal opportunity for Asian Americans in work places.

80-20 considers the commitment from Senator Obama to Asian American issues to be at least as strong as the commitment from Senator Clinton, Senator Edwards, and Governor Richardson. Henceforth, with the exception of California, 80-20 is neutral in the primary contests between Senator Clinton and Senator Obama.

OLD Q4 If elected, will you within your first term of office increase the nomination of qualified Asian Americans to serve as Article III life-tenured federal judges, whenever such vacancies are available until the current dismal situation is significantly remedied? [To put things in perspective, not meaning to imply quota, presently there are 0.6% Asian Am. Federal judges, while the Asian Am. population is 4.5% and the % of Asian Am legal professionals in laws firms of 100 or larger is at least 5.3%.]

Our endorsement of Sen. Clinton Got Prominent Coverage

80-20 held a press conference in SF Bay Area on Jan. 18 to announce our endorsement of Sen. Clinton for the Calif. Democratic primary. Prominent leaders from many Asian Am. ethnic communities attended. 80-20 Board members Joel Wong and Frank Lee co-chaired
the press conference.

In the print media, the news was covered by a mainstream news outlet, the News Media Group in the Bay Area, which included Oakland Tribune (front page), San Jose Mercury and Contra Costa Times. Almost all ethnic media gave us very prominent coverage. The World Journal, Sing Tao Daily and the China Press helped spread the news nationally.

California Residents must register to Vote by January 15, 2008

Asian Americans residing in California will play a VERY IMPORTANT ROLE and will exert a HUGE INFLUENCE on the rest of the country in the upcoming President Primary Election. This is because of the large percentage of Asian Americans residing in California and the early (February 5, 2008) Presidential Primary. 80-20 is reminding all Californians to register to vote by the January 15, 2008 deadline. We are also encouraging you to vote according to the guidelines of the 80-20 initiative.

If you have not already registered to vote please following the following guideline ASAP but no later than January 15, 2008.REGISTRATION DEADLINE:For The Next California Statewide Election (February 5, 2008) the Registration Deadline is January 22, 2008. A postmark on the 15th day prior to the election (January 22, 2008) is acceptable.

If you register between 29 and 15 days prior to the election you will be sent a sample ballot. Otherwise you will receive a post card giving your polling place location.

COST TO REGISTER
Voter registration is free. No postage is required to mail the voter registration application form to the County Elections Official (more information below).

REQUIREMENTS
You must:
* Be a United States citizen
* Be 18 years of age on or before the day of the election
* Be a resident of the State of California
* Not be in prison or on parole for the conviction of a felony
* Not judicially determined to be incompetent to vote.

You do not need to know how to read or write in English or any other language. No tests are given when you register to vote. Probationers may vote.

HOW TO REGISTER TO VOTE
a) Fill out a Voter Registration Form Online
http://www.sos.ca.gov/elections/elections_vr.htm. Complete the on-line form and a typed registration form will be sent to you. After you receive the pre-typed form, just sign it and mail it to your county election official.

Once you receive your form in the mail, which takes approximately 7 to 14 days, you must sign, date, and return it by mail to the county elections official on the return address side of the voter registration card. Please make sure all of the information is correct and drop it back in the mail.

The American Independent Party and the California Democratic Party, and the California Republican Party have agreed to let unaffiliated voters vote for their candidates. The Democratic Party and the Republican Party will not permit unaffiliated voters to vote for their county central committees. Please also note that the Republican Party will not let unaffiliated voters select a Presidential Candidate.

ABSENTEE BALLOTAn absentee ballot is a paper ballot, with the same candidates and measures on it as you would receive at your polling place on Election Day. The ballot is mailed to you with instructions on how to mark it and how to return it.

80-20 still has not heard from Sen. Barack Obama, Gov. Bill Richardson and Rep. Dennis Kucinich. We've not heard from any of the Republican presidential candidates except for Fred Thompson. His campaign answered:

Does Senator Thompson understand that he is running in a democracy? Sen. Hillary made two great points to 80-20. (1) The President cannot nominate a federal judge unless a vacancy occurs. 80-20's Q4 & Q5 needs to incorporate this important point. (2) She is so strongly for equal opportunity that she likes to strengthen the wording of those two questions once the vacancy requirement is covered. 80-20 adopted and deeply appreciated her suggestions, and her integrity and courage. Spreading Outrage against Sen. Clinton

Twice as many faxes per day are being copied to me today than
earlier! They protest Sen. Clinton's uncaring attitude towards Asian Ams

Our campaign spreads fast! Imagine how wide-spread it'll be, a
month from today.

People are asking,

"If Hillary Clinton doesn't have the integrity to stand up for America's
core value -- equal opportunity for all, why is she running for President?"

People are beginning to ask,

"Why are some of our Asian Am. elected officials endorsing her? She has
taken the most donations from our community, caused the worst image
problem for us, given us back nothing but sweet words, yet she has the
most Asian American politicians endorsing her. Do Asian Am. elected
officials understand accountability? "

The Clinton campaign has contacted 80-20 concerning possibly
answering all yeses, but with footnotes, since our "Call To Action" has
started. However, the fact is that we've NOT gotten her signed reply. It
is still her sweet words, signifying nothing.

In 2004, ALL presidential candidates answered 80-20's question-
naire with ALL yeses except for Al Sharpton & George Bush.

However, this year, only Senators Biden, Dodd and Gravel have replied
with all yeses. The Iowa Caucus is coming up on Jan. 3. We must hustle
and put on pressure. That is where YOU come in, because 80-20 is
only as strong as your are.

Just as United Auto Worker targeted General Motors to negotiate
a labor contract first, 80-20 will focus on Sen. Clinton first.

We chose to focus on Hillary's campaign for 4 good reasons.
1) She has raised the most money from our community while indirectly,
at least, caused Asian Ams the worst image problems. In 2007, it was
Norman Hsu and Chinatown, NY. In 1996, it was John Huang, Johnny
Chung, Charlie Trie, Yogesh K. Gandhi, Robert S. Lee and Pauline
Kanchanalak. Indeed, they all got in trouble with the law, because
they raised money for her.
2) She has the most Asian Am. elected officials endorsing her. Neverthe-
less, when "nearly all co-chairs contacted the campaign about the (80-
20) questionnaire" (the above is an exact quote from the Hillary
campaign), she didn't comply by replying satisfactorily. Support
should be a two way street. Sen. Clinton seems to take and take from
Asian Ams.
3) Hillary wants to break the gender glass ceiling by asking us to elect her
as President. However, she is not willing to help Asian Ams break
the glass ceiling at the workplace for the management level. What
is good for the goose should be good for the gander.
4) According to an Asian Am. elected official, the Hillary campaign thinks
she already has Asian Am. support. Does the campaign think all
Asian Ams are suckers like Norman Hsu and John Huang?

Is Sen. Clinton just using Asian Ams.? She had used Asian Ams to
fundraise for her and to endorse her. All she is willing to give back to
us is her sweet words signifying nothing? Does she have the courage to
stand up for America's core value -- equal opportunity?

Her attitude towards Asian Ams is an outrage. Tell her that you
will not be used by her. We will get our equal opportunity, when
we show some backbone. Counting on you!

Background Briefing

After a candidate gets into the White House, the only promise that he/she can't wiggle out of will be the ones answered with YES/NO. Hence 80-20's questionnaire sets very reasonable goals -- asking for basic rights already enjoyed by ALL other Americans, but requiring YES/NO answers. In 2004, ALL Democratic presidential candidates answered ALL yeses, except for Al Sharpton.

Rationale for Asking these 6 questions:
(a) Exec. Order 11246 is a law that sets an effective penalty for any one not giving any American equal opportunity in the workplace. It has been enforced for all Americans except for Asian Americans.
(b)There are more Asian Am lawyers than African Am. and Hispanic lawyers combined. However, Asian Ams have only 1/20 the number of Federal judges of those two groups.

(1) If elected, will you direct the Labor Secretary to hold public hearings regarding the validity of the huge amount of statistical data strongly suggesting discriminatory practices against Asian Americans in workplaces today? (Yes/No)

(2) If the data were shown valid, will you issue a directive to the Labor Department asking it to focus on enforcing Executive Order 11246 on behalf of Asian Americans, since in the past similar efforts have already been made on behalf of women and other minorities? (Yes/No)

(3) Two years after you have issued the directive described in item 2, will you meet with a group of Asian American leaders, put together jointly by 80-20 and the Labor Department, to review the progress in extending equal opportunity to Asian Ams? (Yes/No)

(4) If elected, will you within your first term of office increase the nomination of qualified Asian Americans to serve as Article III life-tenured federal judges, such that the number of such judges is proportionate to HALF the number of Asian Americans in the United States? (Yes/No)
(5) If elected, will you nominate within your first term of office qualified Asian Americans to serve as Article III Circuit Judges? (Yes/No)

(6) If elected, will you consider nominating a qualified AsAm to the Supreme Court, when a vacancy occurs? Two years upon your taking the office, will you meet with a group of AsAm leaders, put together jointly by 80-20 and other AsAm national organizations to review the progress in adding AsAm Federal judges? (Yes/No)

"As president, Hillary Clinton will be strongly committed to ensuring that Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders (AAPIs) are well represented throughout her Administration and in the nominations she makes to federal judgeships. She will also ensure that the federal government works to extend equal opportunity to all AAPIs. Any presidential candidate will give our community such a statement without batting an eye, because it is full of sweet words, signifying nothing. Is Sen. Never Underestimate the Power of One Small Group

87 years ago on 8/19/1920, the 19th Amendment was ratified and became a reality 7 days later. This all happened because of the effort of one raw-boned, determined pioneer lady who lived in the small gold mining town named South Pass City, Wyoming. The lady's name is Esther Hobart Morris.

In January of 1869, when the legislature was in session, Esther traveled to Cheyenne to have her suffrage proposal heard by the State Congress. Because of the lack of hotels, many folks had to stay in rooming houses. Several of these houses were operated by "Madams". Esther rented a room at one of such rooming houses. Each morning she would trudge to the capitol building, come home each night sad and dejected. After a few such days, the "Madam" feeling sorry for Esther and found out her reason. Esther was trying to meet with certain senators and congressmen that held responsible positions so she could present her proposal but no one had given her the time of day. When Esther gave the "Madam" the names of these legislators, the "Madam"'s face brightened up and said, "I know all of these men and we are on a first name basis. I believe I can help you."

The "Madam" arranged a tea party and all these prominent Congressmen were all invited and in attendance and Esther presented her Women's Suffrage Proposal.Because of this delicate situation, every Congressman agreed to act upon Esther's proposal. In December of 1869, Wyoming became the first state in the Union to grant women the right to vote.
