SCA5: First Victory & Empowerment

   Two great news items! The second may be even more significant.

(1) Assemblyman Ed Chau announced that he will NOT vote for SCA 5,
      as it is currently worded. So the dam has been broken. Many
      more AsAm Assemblypersons are expected to follow suite and defeat
      SCA 5. It only takes one more such announcement to defeat SCA 5 in the
      CA's Assembly.

      Assemblyman Chau was the only one of the AsAm Assembly person to
      return S. B. Woo's phone call on the same day. More importantly, he is the
      first AsAm elected California legislator to defend our rightful interests.
      Hence he should be rewarded with our money and votes, if he proves to
      stickup for us through thick and thin in the SCA 5 episode.

(2) It has been reliably leaked to 80-20 that the CA Senate will announce "NOT
      to proceed" with SCA 5 until more hearings on this bill would be held.
      Hopefully, our three Chinese Am senators, upon learning more about how
      SCA 5 will hurt the AsAm college applicants, will vote no afterwards.

     The 3 senators have a role in causing the "NOT to proceed." But they are
      NOT forgiven until the final defeat of SCA 5 is done. After that, 80-
      20's California leaders will seek a chance to talk to the 3 senators and report
      the result of their discussions to you. After that, you may decide if they are
      worthy of your continued support.

   Don't relax yet. SCA 5 could still come back. Keep up with your pressure.
80-20 likes the privilege of saluting the numerous California local groups for doing
very effective lobbying work with the legislators. That is political maturity!

   This is the kind of EMPOWERMENT that 80-20 has always worked to give to
the 16 million Asian Ams nationwide.

"Dear AsAm Legislators in the California Assembly,

Please vote NO to SCA5 in the Assembly.

The senate passing of SCA5 with the support of all three AsAm senators
had sent shock waves through the AsAm community across the nation,
turning ordinary citizens into an army of political activists. . . .

Do NOT underestimate the resolve of ordinary people. The day of
reckoning will come this November. As a California resident, I will join in
hand with millions across the nation, and with the AsAm voters in your
districts, to make sure the AsAm politicians are accountable to their
constituents. The days, when AsAm politicians can take the money and
the votes from their community, and then do whatever that suit their
personal ambitions, are over. We will see to it that such politicians be
defeated in the next election cycle.

If the Democratic Party leadership doesn't bent on pushing forward SCA5,
they will lose their Super Majority in the California legislature. The
recent mayoral election in the City of San Diego will serve as a warning: a
Republican candidate prevailed in an overwhelmingly Democrat city.

SCA5 is a "Yellow Peril Act", a 21st century version of the "Chinese
Exclusion Act of 1882", aimed specifically to impose a quota-like ceiling on
the AsAm students. . . . Therefore, there can be no illusion, no matter
how SCA5 is sugar-coated, that it is a bill aimed squarely to limit the AsAm
enrollment through a reverse "racial preference" treatment, under an
argument that "the college enrollment should reflect the population".
Fortunately, such a "proportional representation" argument has been
consistently rejected by the US Supreme Court in all precedent cases to be
in violation of the "Equal Protection Clause" of the 14th Amendment of the
United States Constitution. . . . .

SCA5 cannot hide under the disguise of "equal opportunity". In fact it is
the antithesis of "equal opportunity" because it demands "equal outcomes"
despite of "unequal qualifications and efforts". It is Communism in
essence because all resources are to be divided equally, depriving the
citizenry of any incentive to excel, dragging down the US competitiveness
in the long run. . . . . Rewarding or penalize an individual based on
his/her skin color is morally repugnant. . . . With your help, we shall
overcome.

Call to Action: Stop SCA5 first then...

RISE & ACT !

(1) An Immediate Concern:
Stop SCA 5 (Senate Constitutional Amendment 5*) from passing the CA
Assembly where there are 8 Asian Am Assembly members. If it passes the
Assembly and also subsequently passes a state wide Referendum, its net
result will be to make state college admission for qualified Asian Am
students more difficult so that other less qualified students will be
admitted. As damaging and unfair as SCA 5 is to Asian American college
applicants, 3 Chinese Am CA state senators actually voted for it.

(2) A Long-term Concern & EMPOWERMENT:
The Asian Am community has always been plagued by elected Asian Am
officials who want our money to help them run for offices but seemingly
are unwilling to represent our rightful interests. The 3 Ch-Am senators
voting for SCA 5 is one example. This may be the best occasion for us to
send a strong signal to ALL elected and appointed AsAm officials that
we'll not permit them to abuse us any more. They must have backbones.
Or, 80-20 shall work with all of you NATIONALLY to UN-elect an elected
Asian Am official to set an example.

   Making sure that elected politicians in your district are accountable
to YOU is A MUST for the 16 million AsAms. 80-20 shall try hard
to deliver that EMPOWERMENT to you, provided that YOU DO YOUR SHARE!
ALL, whether you reside in CA or not, should participate.

   The table below shows the names of all CA AsAm officials who have
a role in SCA 5. If two of the AsAm Assembly members will just abstain or
vote against SCA 5, the motion will fail -- our youngsters' equal
opportunity to enter any CA state college will be assured.

that the 3 CA senators must make to the AsAms in their respective
senatorial districts. Otherwise, we'll organize to UN-elect the unrepentant.

* SCA5 was authored by Hispanic Sen. Ed Hernandez. It passed the CA
Senate on Jan. 30, 2014. It proposed "an amendment to the Constitution of
the State to undo the work of Proposition 209 for Californian's state
colleges and universities." The CA Political News calls it "The Jew and
Asian California University Quota Limitation Act." You got the idea.
Anger is spreading like wildfire. See this petition, entitled "Vote

White House FINALLY Responded to your "Kimmel Petition"

   The White House has responded to the petition signed by 105,111 persons of Chinese descent last Friday. FINALLY! The petition requested the White House to ask ABC to "cut the show and issue a formal apology." Click here to read the White House response.

   After having read it, are you
a. satisfied or
b. disappointed or
c. neither? Have you learned a lesson about America & its government?

   This is a teachable moment!

In a democracy, a government faces many limits to act, even in protecting the weak. The WEAK must setup ways to protect itself. The good part of democracy is that the WEAK is allowed to organize powerful political action committees (PAC), and bloc votes to defeat politicians who ignore the rightful interests of the WEAK.

   You may now understand why 80-20 has

1) not participated in this White House petition, and
2) repeatedly ADVOCATED for AsAm to rely on SELF-empowerment.

   TO COMPARE the results of SELF-reliance versus reliance on White House:

a) The Jimmy Kimmel's "kill all Chinese" show was aired on Oct. 16, 2013.
b) 80-20 got ABC to remove the skit from all ABC platforms on Oct. 23, 2013.
c) 80-20 got ABC executives responsible for the Kimmel show to send 80-20 President, S. B. Woo, a written apology intended to be conveyed to all persons of Chinese descent on Oct. 25, 2013. See the apology here.
d) The White House petition, which so many of you placed such high hopes in, responded almost 3 months later on January 10, 2014, when the issues of "cut the show and issue a formal apology" were moot. .

   Have you donated to 80-20 EF's SELF project? It aims to raise at least the minimum effective self-empowering amount of $1 million per year for 5 years. Currently, 80-20's annual budget is only $100k.

Tempering of Steel OR the Making of 80-20

                  SOME TASKS SEEM EASY FOR 80-20 . . .

1) Getting Abercrombie to withdraw its 4 T-shirts from all its stores, which insulted AsAm sensibilities –  within 3 hours.

2) Getting the Republican National Comm. to pull the "Daisy TV Ad" -- with 1 phone call from 80-20's president.

3) Getting ABC to apologize in writing, signed by high-level executives, for airing the "kill all Chinese" video -- 2.5 days.

 THEY RESULTED FROM THE WORK OF OUR VOLUNTEERS & STAFF WHOSE FACES ARE MARRED WITH DIRT, SWEAT & TEARS:

(1) Delivering increasingly more powerful BLOC VOTES:

   Before 80-20 was born, few AsAms knew what a bloc vote was, much less building it. Time & money spent? 90% of 80-20's 15 years of labor and $1 million. Many volunteers donated heavily & worked 60 hours a week.

   See how 80-20 painstakingly built a significant AsAm bloc vote, one election at a time:



   When a small minority in the US can deliver a lopsided bloc vote, it begins to win politicians' attention, since such a bloc vote can change the outcome of important elections. That attention translates into political clout.

   The work never stops. We've started the 2nd stage of construction to make YOU politically stronger.

(2) Money talks. We must make our money talk for us.

   Just a bloc vote is NOT enough for a small minority populated mostly by new immigrants. However, the combination of having a big bloc vote and sufficient money will give us a higher level of political effectiveness.

   Note that the renowned Jewish political organization, AIPAC, spent $70 million per year, while 80-20 is struggling to raise $1 million/yr for 5 yrs. That amount will be easy to get, if just 1/200th of the 1,000,000 AsAm families with annual income of $100k/yr will be give $100/yr for 5 years. However, thus far only 474 proud families have donated.

   Hence, we set aside two years to do that job. You might have noticed that we are sending two, instead of one e-newsletter per week. So our volunteers are working even harder than before.

   Will the combination be enough? NO, not yet.

(3) Building a bloc vote that will SWING:

   We may have 5.5% of our nation's population, but we only have 3% of the voters, while many of us don't even bother to vote. So (1) and (2) is still not enough. We need to learn from the Jewish community again – a bloc vote that can SWING to either D or R, compelling our politicians NOT to take us for granted. Much educational work will be required to convince our folks of this pragmatic need.

   We don't have to do it often. Just letting politicians know that we have the will and ability to SWING is often enough.

   CONCLUSIONS: 80-20 works tirelessly to make YOU politically stronger. In addition, when immigrants from Asia win equal status with immigrants from the rest of the world, America becomes "a more perfect Union."

White House Petition vs. Self Reliance

   Did the White House (WH) petition go over 100,000 signatures? Did the WH do anything? Did you have high hopes in the WH petition?

   What did we learn? Rely on others or ourselves?

   Did 80-20 urge you to sign the White House petition? NO!   Why didn't 80-20 support the WH petition?  80-20 didn't think the WH could do much,* because we knew:

 (1) The US Constitution prohibits our government from interfering with private industries unless a law has been violated, and
(2) In the US, media is NOT beholden to the WH. It is the other way around.

   S. B. repeatedly told his colleagues and supporters that he had hoped that the WH petition would reach the required limit of 100,000 signatures. He said, "Then, we may finally learn the importance of SELF RELIANCE."

   Now, let's review what OUR OWN efforts have brought:

  [A] In 2 hours, 80-20 induced ABC to delete the offensive video segment. In addition, after 2.5 days of quiet negotiation away from the public glare, ABC was induced to send a written "sincere apology," signed by ABC executives, to 80-20. It is for 80-20 to convey that "sincere apology" to all people of Chinese descent worldwide. ABC also offered to have Kimmel verbally apologize to 80-20 on the phone, which 80-20 declined.  Click here to verify.

  [B] After ABC sent the apology to 80-20, a segment of our community was not satisfied. In two weeks, they organized demonstrations in many cities. The demonstrators got repeated verbal apologies from J. Kimmel. Kimmel promised to stop the "kids table" segment and ABC issued a press release, not signed by anyone, that is a stronger apology than the one 80-20 had received.

   Conclusion:   RELY ON OURSELVES.

   WE MUST PULL OURSELVES UP BY OUR BOOTSTRAPS. WE MUST EMPOWER OURSELVES. GOD HELPS THOSE WHO HELP THEMSELVES.

LEARN from the blacks and/or Jews?

   Ask most Americans, "Would ABC have aired the offending segment on Kimmel's show, if the kid had said 'kill all Jews or blacks"? The answer: NO!

   So what may be their strengths?

   Blacks' strength is in their willingness to speak out, demonstrate and perhaps express their anger publicly. There are about 38 million blacks. They voted at least 9 to 1 for a Democratic presidential candidate for decades. So Dems are always with them.

   The Jewish strengths are NOT well-known to most Asian Ams, especially not to recent immigrants. Jewish Americans combined their clout in business, media, entertainment and politics to punish those who showed anti-Semitism. They prefer to achieve results QUIETLY, because they are often shockingly effective. They know that their effectiveness is, by now, well-known to politicians & nation's top decision makers! Boasting it to "average Joes" is neither called for nor wise. An example is what happened to Rick Sanchez of CNN.

   Rick, a CNN anchor, was asked during a radio show, whether Jon Stewart, a person Rick didn't like, was a minority owing to Jon's Jewish faith. Rick responded,

   "Yeah, very powerless people. [laughs] He's such a minority. I mean, you
know, please. What—are you kidding? I'm telling you that everybody who
runs CNN is a lot like Stewart, and a lot of people who run all the other
networks are a lot like Stewart. And to imply that somehow they, the
people in this country who are Jewish, are an oppressed minority?"

   The next day, Rick was fired by CNN. Click here to see it for yourself. Now think about the Jimmy Kimmel episode. Ponder!

   Most of you have never heard of AIPAC (American Israel Public Affairs Comm.) whose political influence is legendary. I'll not bore you here. However, you've seen on TV how Republican and Democratic presidential candidates competed to be the best friends of the Jewish and Israel.

   Which group should we emulate? Let's compare our group characteristics with those of Jews and blacks.


   We are almost there, if we want to emulate Jewish Ams. The biggest difference in Building-Blocks-of-Group-Clout is: donation habits.

80-20 Salutes Chinese Ams & Urges Building Relations

   80-20 salutes the Chinese American community for its persistent, effective and rational expression of concern to ABC regarding ABC's airing of the "kill all Chinese" segment on "Jimmy Kimmel Live" on Oct. 16. "Jimmy Kimmel Live" is NOT a live show.

   Someone at ABC committed the grievous mistake in judgment to allow that segment of the taped show to air at the expense of all people of Chinese descent and the good image of the USA.

   Last Friday, ABC issued a "press release" which clearly stated that it was at fault:

     "On behalf of everyone at Jimmy Kimmel Live and ABC, please accept
      our heartfelt, sincere apology for the airing of the "Kids Table"
      segment of Jimmy Kimmel Live on October 16, 2013.

      The simple fact is, the segment should never have been broad-
     cast. Systems we have in place for these types of things did not function
      properly, and steps have been made to try and prevent this kind of
      egregious mistake from occurring in the future. . . . . " (emphasis added)

   80-20 finds the statement completely satisfactory. Please see the complete ABC press release at the end of this email.

   We now urge our community to use this occasion to strengthen our relationship with ABC. Let's now make lemonade out of lemons.

   However, we first want to salute those who led the demonstrations in various cities. Their contribution was huge, and on behalf of 80-20's Boards, I want to express our deep appreciation.

   80-20 played a different role. We first induced ABC to apologize verbally and in writing. Indeed, ABC's press release last Friday may be partially related to 80-20 President S. B. Woo's live interview on CCTV last Thursday. During the interview Woo urged ABC to issue another apology to the demonstrators, if it'd win their satisfaction, and began the process of building a harmonious relationship with ABC.

   ABC 's VP Tim McNeal, VP on Talent Development and Diversity, has repeatedly said to Woo that ABC wishes to have more of our actors, directors, producers and play writers. We believe this is the way to build deeper relations, especially when ABC assured "steps have been made to try and prevent this kind of egregious mistake from occurring in the future."   It's time to heal & build.

   The first 3 are well-known events, the last is not, but perhaps more important. Success has a thousand fathers, we again sincerely thank all who have helped in each event. However, without exaggeration, 80-20 PAC has been the primary factor in bringing success to each episode.

                 ABC/Jimmy Kimmel: "Kill all Chinese"

   Not much description is needed for this recent event. 80-20 PAC was the first to get ABC to verbally apologize and only one* to get a written public apology from ABC's high-level executives. Other efforts & demonstrations brought verbal apologies from Jimmy Kimmel both on air and before demonstrators. We thank them.

     4 T-shirts by Abercrombie-Fitch (A&F) Demeaning AsAms

   In Spring 2002, A&F put out a line of 4 T-shirts with derogatory portrayals of Asians. One T-shirt depicted an Asian with slanted eyes & a conical hat. Another T-shirt, with two Asian men at "Wong Brothers Laundry Service," carried the logo: ``Two Wongs Can Make It White.''

   Students called & emailed A&F to protest. They also demonstrated in front of A&F stores for weeks without satisfaction. Many asked 80-20 to help. On 4/18/02, 80-20 PAC president S. B. Woo called A&F Chairman and CEO Michael Jeffries. About 2 hours later, Mr. Seth Johnson, A&F CFO, called to inform Woo that the 4 T-shirt would be withdrawn that day. In addition, A&F would issue a press release to Associated Press announcing the decision later that day. For details, click here.

               Tripling AsAm Life-tenured Federal Judges

   In 2008, 80-20 PAC induced ALL** Democratic presidential candidates to promise giving top priority to increase Asian Am federal life-tenured judges, if elected. At the time, there were only 8 Asian Am District Court judges, and zero Circuit Court judges. Since taking office, President Obama has increased the number of AsAm District Court judges to 21.      Stopped GOP's "Daisy" TV Ad, which fanned "Yellow Peril"

   When it comes to a matter of extreme importance, 80-20 can be effective with the Republican Party also. They respect 80-20's fierce determination.

   In the 2000 election, a Republican TV ad showed a supposed nuclear bomb from China hitting the US. It outrageously fanned the fear & hatred of people of Chinese descent. 80-20 president S. B. Woo called the Chair of the Republican National Committee and demanded stoppage, although not a single Chinese Am. org. was willing to join 80-20 in this action. J. Kimmel Apologized; AP Covers ABC’s Apology to Us

           Associated Press Reported ABC's Public Apology

   AP reported ABC's apology. It sent out an article entitled "ABC apologizes for joke on 'Kimmel' about killing Chinese people" which is fair enough. Tens of mainstream media published the story. To see all the   stories, click on https://www.google.com/#q=Ap+ABC+apology&start=10.

   However, at least 90% of the media changed the title to "ABC apologizes for child's joke on Kimmel's  show" (emphasis added by SB Woo). That change is unfortunate and misleading, because most Americans will find it silly to apologize for a child's joke.

   Some of us may think Jimmy Kimmel is a big deal – a star! However, within ABC corporation, the two executives who signed the public apology conveyed by 80-20 are many levels higher than Kimmel. Some of us may find the kids' statements offensive. Most Americans accept that "Kids say the darndest things."

   Most readers may NOT realize that "Jimmy Kimmel Live" was not live. It was taped, reviewed, perhaps edited and then aired. If the kids had said "kill all Jews or blacks", the offensive segment would NEVER have been shown. In other words, there was a grievous mistake in judgment committed by ABC's middle level management. It was on that ground that 80-20 convinced the high level ABC executives to tender "our sincere apology" to people of Chinese descent worldwide.

                   Is ABC's Apology Public or Private?

   ABC's letter of apology was on our website. That link was emailed to 350,000 AsAm families. The letter was also published in the front page of the World Journal. Now it is also an AP story, and published by tens of mainstream media. So how much more public can an apology be?

ABC Apologizes to People of Chinese Descent Through 80-20 PAC
 
   After 2.5 days of hard negotiations, 80-20 obtained an apology from ABC for airing the "kill every Chinese" segment on "Jimmy Kimmel Live", which is actually not live. 80-20 took ABC executives to task for their grievous lack of judgment. On the other hand, we can shrug off those kids' statements, because "Kids say the darndest things."

   Two high-level ABC executives asked 80-20 to convey ABC's "sincere apology" to all persons of Chinese descent. On 10.23.2013, after S. B. Woo, President of 80-20 PAC contacted ABC, it immediately took down the offensive segment on Youtube. However, 80-20 didn't announce that progress, because intense negotiation was continuing.

   80-20 PAC is proud to have served the Chinese Am. component of the Asian Am. community by being the ONLY organization to have obtained a verbal & written apology from ABC.

   This incident is a teachable moment for our community -- the importance of an Asian Am organization that has the stature & ability to serve the rightful interests of our community. PRESS RELEASE: ABC Apologizes to People of Chinese Descent Through 80-20 PAC

   80-20 PAC, which is by far the largest Asian American political action committee with an email list of 350,000 e-addresses, announced today that ABC's top executives gave verbal and written apologies for permitting an offensive segment on "Jimmy Kimmel Live" to air. It requested S.B. Woo, President of 80-20 National Asian American Political Action Committee, to be a conduit to convey "our sincere apology" to the "Chinese community, Asian Community, anyone of Chinese descent or any community at large."

   ABC also apologized for letting the offensive segment on Youtube. ABC stressed that upon being contacted by 80-20 PAC, it has since "taken swift action" to remove it and promised to "edi it out of any future airing of the show."

   The written apology was signed by ABC's Executive Vice President, Alternative Series, Specials and Late Night, Lisa Berger, and Vice President, Talent Development and Diversity, Tim McNeal.

   Mr. McNeal also verbally requested S.B. Woo to convey ABC's eagerness to have Asian American writers, actors and producers apply for jobs with ABC. It is one way to avoid such an unfortunate incident in  the future -- through diversity in its organization. McNeal said, "ABC takes achieving diversity very seriously."  Interested parties may reach his office at Tim.McNeal@ABC.com.

   Mr. McNeal has also offered to ask the producer of "Jimmy Kimmel Live" to "personally apologize." Woo preferred a written apology from the top executives, which was sent subsequently.

   S.B. Woo said, "Many worked to achieve this success. 80-20 is very much aware that many different individuals and organizations in the Chinese, Asian and other communities have made great efforts asking ABC to apologize. They organized a petition at the White House, and planned demonstrations in NY & SF. The Chinese media, in particular, did an outstanding job in calling our community's attention to this unfortunate incident. It is their victory."

   Woo also said, "Personally I don't consider it as an 80-20 victory at all. Instead, it is a sad teachable moment for our community. I humbly hope that this incident has shown our community the importance of SELF RELIANCE. 80-20 started communicating with ABC on Oct. 23. We together got the result before the White House did. :-)

   Woo said, "Had we been like the Jewish American community, the outcome of this incident would have been even more satisfactory. The 3 largest social and civil rights Jewish American organizations have a combined annual expenditure of $168 million. In comparison, 80-20 PAC has an annual expenditure of $100k. The population of Jewish Americans is 6 million. The Asian Am population is 16 million. So the per person expenditure by the big 3 Jewish orgs is $28. The per person expenditure of 80-20 PAC is $0.007.   The expenditure ratio is 4000 to 1! That is why 80-20 Educational Foundation is trying to establish a Self Empowerment Long-term Fund, SELF, of $10 million/year for 5 years.
