Opportunities Abound - presidential primaries!

Presidential elections are around the corner, 80-20 wants to empower
the entire Asian American community with these facts.

DO YOU KNOW???

1) The number of PRIMARY voters is normally only 1/5 (1 out of 5) that
of the GENERAL presidential elections*?

2) PRIMARY candidates are numerous e.g. there are 8 GOP presidential
candidates today? The spreading of votes makes 80-20's bloc vote even
more powerful. Why do Republican presidential candidates play to the
ultra conservative and the religious right? Because they vote in
primaries and in blocs.

3) In a PRIMARY, only registered party members may votein mt states?
Let's for simplicity assume that it is 1/3 each for D/I/R.

Mathematics & Astounding Revelation

If you do the math (1/5 x 1/8 x 1/3) = 1/120 = 0.8 %, it means that an
average candidate in a Republican PRIMARY will only get 0.8% of the votes
cast in presidential GENERAL election. What is the % of Asian Am voter in
the general election nationally; in most of the populous states; in CA?
Respectively, 2%; 3.5%; and 8%. Compare those percentages with
0.8% and think!!!

Opportunity!

If all AsAms register as Republicans, and all (instead of just 1/5) vote in
the PRIMARY, the Republican presidential candidates will henceforth
campaign to two groups -- 1) the religious right and 2) Asian Americans.

Call To Action - focus on CA, NY, HI & VA

Background:
Congresswoman Judy Chu together with others have intro-
duced a bipartisan House Resolution 282 for the House to
express regret over past decades of anti-Chinese legislations,
including the Chinese Exclusion Act. The parallel Senate
Resolution 201 seems in good shape. H.R. 282 may need a few
more sponsors. If you live in areas densely populated by
AsAm voters, you can help greatly & be a part of history.

If you live in CA, HI, NY, or VA and live in one of the following
Congressional Districts, congratulations! You can be a part of history --
you are almost guaranteed to get your Representative to co-sponsor H.R.
282. All you have to do is to get together, say, 20 friends in your District
and politely request your Congressperson's cosponsorship. There are so many
Asian Am. voters in those districts, that no Representative in his/her right
mind would refuse. Otherwise, the next election may be difficult for
him/her when displeased voters will cast their votes.

This is how democracy works. Your Congressperson is obligated to work
for you, when it is obviously the right thing to support and no
allocation of additional resources is required from the Congress.

CALL TO ACTION -- estimated chance of success is 99.9%,
if you get involved!

On May 26 Repts. Judy Chu (D-CA) and Judy Biggert (R-IL) introduced
a bipartisan resolution (not a bill) expressing regret for six decades of
legislation targeting the Chinese people for physical and political
exclusion, including the infamous Chinese Exclusion Act. It is known
as House Resolution 282. A parallel bipartisan Senate Resolution
201 was also introduced by Sens. Diane Feinstein (D-CA) and Scott Brown
(R-MA).

On May 28, Cong. Chu asked 80-20 to help secured co-sponsors of both
resolutions. This "Call To Action" is to ask YOU to help secure co-
sponsorship from your own Congressperson.

80-20 never asks our supporters to do anything which it doesn't do itself.
So, we first spent the last 6 days securing co-sponsors ourselves. Result? A
complete success! The ENTIRE congressional delegation of Delaware, the
First State, became co-sponsors. Senator Tom Carper & Christ Coons
are co-sponsoring S. Res. 201. Delaware's one and only Congressman,
John Carney, co-sponsors H. Res. 282. When S.B. wrote to thank each,
Senator Tom Carper emailed back and said, "S.B. you are welcome, but
it is we who should thank you. All the best. Tom"

Will you please work with 80-20 to become a successful lobbyist of your

anyone 1000 of Chinese descent from immigrating to America. This was
the first federal law barring any race or ethnicity of people from
immigrating to the United States. The original bill barred anyone from
China immigrating for 10 years, while an amendment passed two years
later barred immigration of any person of Chinese descent, regardless
of whether they are immigrating from China or any other country. A
bill in 1892 extended this ban another 10 years, while a bill in 1902
extended this ban indefinitely. (emphasis added by S. B. Woo) After 41
years, Congress repealed the ban in 1943, coinciding with the Chinese
allying with the US during World War II. Congress never passed a bill
or resolution expressing regret or apologizing for the original ban.

Recommendation:

. . you should cosponsor S. Res 201. The 1882 Chinese Exclusion laws
unfairly targeted people of Chinese origin and descent on the basis of
anti-Chinese prejudices and for no other reason. . . . Harlan'

We ignore politics, focusing on education, and jobs. We don't seem to 

have the sophistication to realize that the purpose of a good education

to get a good job, while good jobs and politics are related.

When we don't pay attention to politics in a democracy, we, the
smallest of minorities, 
are shortchanged in good jobs, especially when we
reach the prime of our lives 
and are ready to take on the more
responsible jobs.

Hundreds of 80-20's members have stepped forth to combat
political APATHY. In another couple of weeks, we expect 600 to
1,000. With an army of that size, we can make a difference.

general science society. She is now the Chairwoman of AAAS.

2. Dominic Ng, Chairman and CEO of East West Bank, was elected
Chairman of The Committee of 100 (C-100) , a prestigious Chinese
American organization on May 13.

3. Ted Lieu was elected state senator of California on Feb. 15. He is
now one of the 2 Asian American senators in CA.

Otherwise we ruin our community's reputation.)
3) We met. Specify when and where.
4) I usually vote R/D. But I am really unhappy about your Party
blocking judicial nominees for partisan politics.

Mention that you are an 80-20 supporter. Get the GOP senators accustomed
to knowing 80-20.

Goodwin Liu came from Georgia. That counts with GA senators. So 1f6 I hope a
lot of AsAms in Georgia will email. The more the two political parties
hear from us, the more they will pay attention to AsAms. Most AsAms
don't know that interconnection. 80-20 knows. Together we shall

Take a look at the statistics shown in the chart below. Do you think that Asian Ams have been
discriminated in workplaces?

Ponder! Could the stars align themselves, as shown in the second bullet? Or have good people
with deep political knowledge done spade work?

When E.O. 11246 is enforced as the Dept of Labor has
promised, about 1.5 million Asian Americans will benefit
DIRECTLY, finally gaining equal opportunity. 1.5 million
Asian Am workers !! That is why 80-20 ranks this feat as its
TOP ACCOMPLISHMENT.

Try to recall if any government official or private organization,
be they AsAm or non-AsAm, has given you and your children
such service in the past?

If not, do you want to keep 80-20 alive by joining and doubling
its size? The enforcement of EO 11245 is NOT a reality until
our bars in the chart above are as TALL as everyone else'.

2nd Top Accomplishment

EXTRA! In yesterday's email, 80-20 predicted a 90% chance for Edward Chen to get the 
Senate confirmation as a Federal District Judge. HE DID!

If 80-20 didn't exist how might your life be different?

Substantively, without 80-20, the % of AsAm federal judges may still only
be at 0.7% of the federal life-tenured judges, and all at the lowest rank of
District Judges. Yet, we have 4.5% of the nation's population, and a
disproportionately larger share of legal workers, many of whom are
graduates of top tier law schools.

Psychologically, and more significantly, having witnessed how 80-20
has successfully induced the US political leaders to address our concerns,
Asian Ams became aware that we are NOT destined to be 2nd class
citizens. We just need to organize our own GROUP political clout!

Nationally, America becomes "a more perfect Union."

ADDITIONAL POLITICING by 80-20 to cause the
above DRASTIC imporvement.

Relying on Pres. Obama's willingness to help is not enough. We must
strive on our own. Recall that "God helps those who help themselves."

1) 80-20 wrote every senior Dem. Senator in the 50 states urging
them to recommend qualified AsAms as federal life-tenured judges.
Most AsAms may not know this political protocol. The President
simply picks one of the 3 suggested by Senior Senators of his own
party.

2) In addition, 80-20's Board members talked to every one of those
senators or their legal counsel or the Chair of their Judicial
Nomination Committee urging the same and mainstained some
contact.

3) Furthermore, 80-20 donated to all who responded positively to 80-
20's prompting, after the nominations have been confirmed by the
Senate.

80-20 does a lot of quiet spadework for the community that most AsAms
don't even know how to begin. That is 80-20's immense value. Do you

80-20's 3rd Top Accomplishment

If 80-20 didn't exist how might your life be different?

The above landmark achievement, a signed promise by the President of
our great nation to help Asian Americans achieve equal opportunity, WOULD

80-20's 4th Top Accomplishment

If 80-20 didn't exist how might your life be different?

If your friend looks at the above table and concludes, "Therefore,
Democrats will treat AsAms better, owing to our bloc vote in its favor,
although Republicans will treat AsAms worse", THEN he/she is utterly
politically naive about American democracy.

The reality is very different. Both D & R would treat AsAms MUCH
BETTER once they know that an org. like the 80-20 is fighting for AsAms.
They know that from that point on they'd need to EARN AsAm votes.

Here are the facts: 80-20 was established in 1998. Only 1
AsAm Acting Secretary, historically the first ever, was appointed in the last
days of the Clinton (D) Administration in 2000. Bush (R) won, although
80-20 endorsed his opponent. Nevertheless, Bush appointed 2 full-
fledged Cabinet Secretaries. 8 yrs later, Obama (D), endorsed by 80-20,
won. He appointed 3 Cabinet Secretaries. From 0 to 3, following 80-20's
formation, is it pure coincidence? You be the judge.

More facts: Before 80-20, AsAms were viewed as suckers by both political
parties. We donated generously for a photo with a candidate. The politicians
wondered if AsAms have any social consciousness. AsAms were in no-
man's land. We were ignored by both D & R. We had to be three times
as good to be treated as equals, and we seemed to be proud of it.
We are called the "model minority" while being treated worse than
all others.

80-20, as soon as it was formed, pressed for EQUAL OPPORTUNITY
in workplaces. The Bush Administration, through Labor Secretary Elaine
Chao, said "NO!" When 80-20 finally gave up on Bush's Administration,
it helped D gain leadership from R in both the House and the Senate.
In 2008, 80-20 worked its heart out for Obama in battleground states,
Obama won. The Labor Dept, under Obama, promised in writing, to
give EQUAL OPPORTUNITY to AsAms in workplaces by enforcing E. O.
11246. That'll lift about 2 million Asian Ams to equal citizenship, if
indeed the promise will be kept*.

Decide! Do you need an org. like the 80-20 PAC? If you don't help, 80-
20 PAC will be dissolved on 3/22/2012. 80-20 will love to serve you.

Air your view on Ivies' admission policies nationally

Want your views on Ivy League schools' admission policy toward Asian
American applicants aired nationally? Send me your name & phone
number to 80-20. A reporter at one of the largest newspapers of the
nation (one of the top five in circulations) wants to interview such Asian
American individuals. 80-20 is assisting that reporter.

Two Contrasting Views

One is from Ben - an Asian Am. possibly in his late 30s. The other is a
recent article from The Boston Globe.

"While I empathize with the parent as well as your reasoning for
using this story, what's missing is this parent's fundamental lack of
understanding that academic admissions isn't solely about black
and white numbers. Most top institutions want students that are
participative, inclusive and contributing to the diversity and overall
well being of an university's culture. . . .

For the record, I was admitted to a top 5 MBA school with less than
a 3.0 GPA. I tested well with a 96th percentile on the GMAT's, but
this is not 98th or 99th percentile. What helped me most was the
extracurriculars, strong recommendations, and essays that "popped",
and created a personality that admissions felt was vibrant and would
add value to the community. . . .

Culturally, we Asian/Chinese Americans need to learn to develop the
extracurricular and soft skills that make us more rounded candidates,
not just automations as society fairly or unfairly views us.

Life beyond school demands high emotional and social IQ, not just
raw brainpower. . . . Regards, Ben"

On the other hand, a Boston Globe article* of 4/17 titled "Competitive
disadvantage" reported evidence of discrimination against AsAm applicants:

"In 2009 . . . Princeton sociologist Thomas Espenshade . . . examined data
on students applying to college in 1997 and found what looks like different
standards for different racial groups. They calculated that Asian-Ams
needed nearly perfect SAT scores of 1550 to have the same
chance of being accepted at a top private university as whites who
scored 1410 and African-Americans who got 1100. . . .

By contrast, at California's competitive - and race-blind - state
schools, Asian-Americans are much better represented: 52
percent of the student population at the University of bed California at
Irvine, 40 percent at Berkeley, and 37 percent at UCLA.

The difference suggests that, where considering race is allowed, elite
universities may be handicapping Asian-American applicants. "They just
all sort of magically end up with under 20 percent Asian students, " Hsu
says. One Princeton lecturer has asked if that number represents the "Asian
ceiling." . . .

Brookline organizer Chi Chi Wu, who is a lawyer . . . says it may be
time to fight back, using a legal theory called disparate impact. "In other
areas of civil rights law, when you have statistical disparities, you can
often make a case. You don't have to prove the university is saying, 'We
don't want all these Asians,' but just having those statistics and being
able to point to disparities is enough."

She adds, "If we Asian-Americans don't organize, there's no amount of
piano practicing that will help us." "

Show the courage of your conviction! If you are convinced
that there is discrimination, SPEAK UP.

80-20 has no official position on this issue yet, owing to its
extreme complexity. But we invite the community to
together dig a bit deeper on this issue and see
where the truth is. Note that the Supreme Court
permits using race as a factor in college admission.

A Father's Sad Letter about Ivy League Admission

Remember the proactive parent, an 80-20 member, who wrote the "heart-felt,
"no holds-barred letter from a Chinese American," shown below?

"We, Chinese Americans, often relish ourselves as the smartest and
the most educated ethnic group in the country, but in some aspect,
we are also the most stupid and selfish. We spend $35 per half hour
to give our 
children a piano lesson, countless hours of after school to
let them get ahead academically, move to good school districts, get
group average API of 997 or above, without asking whether the
academic performance will translate into equal opportunity in school
admission. . . . Each of us busy educating our kids while hoping some-
one else would be doing the heavy lifting for the greater community.
It is very selfish and has served us very badly. . . .

Success is NOT defined as you have to be three times as good to get
the same opportunity (This is what most Chinese American parents
are preparing their children for). . . .

Your 80-20 membership will be the best $35 or $50 you have ever
spent on your children."

Below is a very different letter from a very different parent. This parent
said his children were unfairly treated by Ivy League school's admission
policy. He suggested:

"I have some advice for Asian kids trying to get into the Ivies. . . .
Change your last name to an Anglo name. I'm almost serious
about that."

He even gave an example: "My granduncle changed his name to Wood
from Woo in the early 1900's to avoid discrimination."

Let's empathize with those Asian immigrants of a century ago who
anglicized their names. They faced impossible odds, so they sacrificed
their dignity to eek out a life. Today, sacrificing one's self-respect and dignity
to survive in the US is no longer necessary. All we have to do is to put our
shoulders to the wheel and push for equal opportunity. An example? "Your
80-20 membership will be the best $35 or $50 you have ever spent on your
children," said the proactive parent.

The frustrated parent, not an 80-20 member, is not alone. There are hundreds
of thousands of parents like him in our community -- all the more reason to help
80-20 PAC grow, we think.

Both letters were from REAL persons. A few words were changed, a few
deletions were made in the SAD letter to honor his request "to keep somewhat
anonymous." See his letter at the footnote.

The Letter from the parent who half seriously suggested for Asians
to anglicize "your last names"

"I would not like this specific info posted, to keep somewhat anonymous. I
wanted to give you an example of the apparent bias there is against Asian
students at the Ivies. My child just got notifications of the college
applications. The student got rejected at basically every Ivy League school
and "near" Ivy, except one. Didn't even make the wait list except one.

The child has very high SATs (800 math) close to 800 verbal, 3.8+ GPA
from a nationally well-known very selective private school, four AP courses
all A's, all 5's on AP exams. Model student. Was one of a xxx kids in the
country selected for an yyy Award, and National Merit Finalist. It's ridiculous.
What more do Asian kids have to do these days to get into these schools?

I had another child who did graduate from Ivy, but he(she) only got into
only one, and had an SAT average significantly higher than the other kids
at her particular Ivy. It's really unfair. These kids work hard, jump through
a lot of hoops to prepare for college only to hit that invisible ceiling. . . ."

Act! Join 80-20. It's NOT TOO LATE.

Without 80-20, you and your offspring will face the glass ceiling for
another 75 years i.e. another 3 generations. See Chart 1 and Research

With 80-20, we estimate the 75 years will shorten to 10 years.
This impacts EVERY Asian Am who works in the mainstream society.

Asian Am. civic organizations have talked about the glass ceiling for
decades. Many used "glass ceiling" as a sound bite to attract support or
contributions, without doing the hard work to gather the hard data to
confront America's political leaders to make America live up to its core
value of "Equal Opportunity For All."

80-20 changed that sad situation. It systematically, year by year,
induced America to live up to its nobler self:

In 2005, 80-20 gathered the hard data and got EEOC to vouch for their
validity and analysis.
In 2006, 80-20 bought the full page ad in Washington Post, seen below,
to jolt our nation's conscience.
In 2008, 80-20 confronted the presidential candidates with the information
shown in this ad & got the commitment of Obama, Biden and Hilary
Clinton to remove the glass ceiling for Asian Ams., when elected.
In 2009, 80-20 citing Pres. Obama's written commitment got the
Labor Dept. to commit to begin enforcing Exec. Order 11246 to
eliminate the glass ceiling against Asian Americans.

Without 80-20, will the above be done for Asian Ams?

If 80-20 fails to double its membership and dissolves itself on March 22, 2013,
will the duration of the glass ceiling on Asian Americans revert back to
75 years? You decide!

If 80-20 didn't exist, how might your life be different?

Remember when racist attacks against Asian Am. candidates were
common? Did you feel safe in an environment with attacks against
Asian Americans airing on TV, radio, or in newspapers all the time?
Remember the Daisy Ad? (See 80-20's 10th Achievement from 3/24/11.)
Without 80-20, not only would there be a lot fewer successful Asian
Am. office holders, but all Asian Am.'s will suffer from facing racist
attacks in the media constantly.

Racist attacks are mounted in an election campaign, because they
are effective! Only when no one dares to amount such attacks, for
fear of reprisal by 80-20 PAC, will AsAm candidates have equal chance to
succeed. That is Group Political clout!

Why is 80-20 PAC so effective? Exaggeration?

While the candidates who mount such attacks are the apparent bad
guys, 80-20 has the unique political knowledge to know that such attacks
are normally designed by the political consultants.

The political consultants want a good win-loss record to further their
future business. Hence, the hypocritical ones often tempt candidates to
mount such an attack against an Asian Am. whose community is known
to be meek. The consultants ease their conscience by saying the
following to their candidate-clients, "We only advise you how to win.
You decide whether it is the right or wrong thing to do." Often, the
candidates can't resist the temptation; the vile deeds would be conceived
and delivered.

Normally, the vile candidate and consultant count on the fact that
once the election is over, all is forgotten. 80-20 knows that to stop such
attacks for good, it must hold both accountable and haunt them forever
for their vile deeds -- till the candidate is defeated and till the consultant
will be driven out of the consultant business.

In terms of political effectiveness, there is a big difference between
a PAC like 80-20 and Asian Am. office holders e.g. senators, congress-
persons, and governors. The office holders don't dare touch the tough issues
because they fear the repercussions in their next elections, although they
have much resources under their command. Only a political action
committee dares to tackle the REALLY TOUGH ISSUES, because a PAC
doesn't face a re-election in the mainstream society.

80-20's top accomplishments are examples of tough issues that it dared
to tackle while Asian Am elected officials remained silent. That is
not the fault of AsAm elected officials. That is the nature of American
election politics -- there are issues that only a PAC dares to tackle.

The Asian Am. community must have the wisdom and generosity to support
both office holders, who are important to us in the long term, and at least
one well-funded national PAC.

A heart-felt, no-holds-barred letter from a Chinese-Am

A great letter! It tells it like it is. How many Chinese Am. families
do you know live like this? [The series of emails on "80-20's Top 10
Accomplishments" will continue after this.]

"We, Chinese Americans, often relish ourselves as the smartest and the

and upbringing. Is that what a good education is for? Each of us busy
educating our kids while hoping someone else would be doing the heavy
lifting for the greater community. It is very selfish and have served us
very badly in the past, and will continue to be so for us and our children.

Success is NOT defined as you have to be three times as good to get the
same opportunity (This is what most Chinese American parents are preparing
their children for). It is defined as when you are equally qualified you get
equal opportunity (This is what most mainstream parents are preparing
their children for). The only way to achieve it in this country,
demonstrated over and over again by other ethnic groups, is through a
bloc vote in the election. 80-20 means achieving a 80% swing-able bloc
vote to support the candidates who pledge their support to our
community and hold them responsible for the delivery of their pledges.
This is what 80-20 is about.

Our community may still be in America's political no-man's land
-- ignored by both political parties. Not a single full fledged Cabinet
Member instead of TWO under Bush and THREE when Obama took office.

80-20 was established in the late 1990s when both political parties
were competing to distance themselves from Asian Americans, owing to
the campaign finance scandal that New York Times called "The Asia
Gate". The Democratic Party even demanded past tax returns from ALL
its big Asian Am. donors. That demand was likely un-constitutional.
Nevertheless, our civic organizations sat meekly by. 80-20 was born!

80-20 will protect your rights against either political party. Indeed,
80-20 EMPOWERS us with our GPC and its unique knowledge of
American politics.

Explaining Why Politicians Respect a Bloc Vote So Much

Two candidates run against each other in a political race, which for
simplicity is assumed to have two constituent groups only. One group has
one million votes (8%) and the other has 11 million votes (92%). Candidate
A, a novice, courts the larger group. When the ballots are open, candidate
A wins the larger community by the ratio of 52/48. The margin of
difference is 4%. Since the larger group has 11 millions votes, 4% of 11
million votes provides a winning margin of 440,000 votes to candidate A.
His opponent, candidate B, is a seasoned politician. She courts the smaller
group knowing its ability to deliver a bloc vote in the ratio of 8 to 2, as the
black and Jewish communities can. B wins that community by a ratio of
80 to 20. The difference between 80% and 20% is 60%. 60% of 1 million
votes is 600,000 votes. As a result, candidate B wins the election by
(600,000 - 440,000) or 160,000 votes. Astounding? Does that knowledge
empower you?

NOTE: Student groups & Buddhist orgs have demonstrated
and protested for days by the time 80-20 decided to enter the
battle. We are glad to get A&F to see its mistake in 3 hours.
To the best of our knowledge, A&F C.O.O. Keith Johnson
called 80-20 PAC only, to relate its decision to withdraw
its T-shirts. However, we gladly acknowledge that efforts

Such a TV ad could appear on your TV screen in every election season
hinting that China might nuke the USA. Will such a hateful TV ad hurt
you, even though you are not a Chinese American? Yes! It'll hurt ALL
Asian Ams. Do please remember that Vincent Chin, a Chinese Am., was
killed by 2 Detroit auto workers mistaking Vincent as a Japanese!

A lot of Americans, being less familiar with Asia, worry about a rising Asia!

That worry can easily become yellow peril if it's stoked.
Remember the Chinese Exclusion Act?
Remember the internment of Japanese Americans in WWII?
Remember Christopher Cox's Congressional hearing promising
evidence of huge number of Chinese spies in the US but
NEVER presented it?
Remember the subsequent Wen-Ho Lee trial that collapsed?
Remember SARS in 2003 that made us seem like tainted folks?
Remember the fear of Sikhs, Pakistani & Indonesian Muslims after 9/11?

Remember the sayings of Prof. Samuel Huntington of Harvard who
authored "The Clash of civilizations"?

"the ideal enemy for America would be ideologically hostile,
racially and culturally different, and militarily strong
enough to pose a credible threat to American security"

Will that enemy be China and/or India?

We can't stop our fellow compatriots from worrying about Asia, but we
can stop the worry from becoming "yellow peril".

Dear Fellow Asian Americans:

The Board of 80-20 Political Action Committee (PAC), after a 2 day
meeting, respectfully requests

YOUR verdict for the PAC to
either GROW or DIE by March 22, 2013.

The PAC was formed 12 years ago to give Asian American community
the necessary group political clout to induce our nation's political
establishment to treat us as equal citizens. Over the years, about 6,500
individuals, out of a community of 14.5 million, have sacrificed their time
and money to support the PAC. It averages to an annual membership of
about 2,000 and an annual budget of about $100,000. Tens of those
6,500 sacrificed much more -- giving years of their lives and donating tens
of thousands of dollars.

80-20, in its own evaluation, has accomplished much, though not
reaching the final goal. See below so that you may give 80-20 an
informed verdict.

80-20's Top 10 Accomplishments

1) Stopping in 1 day GOP's "Daisy" TV Ad fanning "yellow Peril"
2) Inducing Abercrombie & Fitch to withdraw its T-shirts in 3 hours
3) Our 1st bloc vote brought the first AsAm Cabinet Secretaries
4) Stopping racist attack on AsAm political candidates for good
5) An ad that cracks the glass ceiling over Asian Americans
6) A 2006 bloc vote that truly rewarded and punished

8) Pres. Obama's signed reply to 80-20, with all yeses
9) Doubling the number of AsAm federal judges in 4 yrs.
10) Equality before law (E.O. 11246) for AsAms, finally!

An accounting of its 1st accomplishment will be emailed to you in
2 days. The other accomplishments will follow in the next 3 months.

To summarize and to be frank, the toll on those who keep 80-20 alive in
order to serve the political welfare of our community has become
unbearable after 12 years. Many of the key persons are exhausted
or burnt out. Therefore, unless more Asian Americans are willing to step
up and take a turn to serve our weak, meek and exploited community,
80-20 shall die through apathy.

Is 80-20 worth the $35 ($50 for family) membership as social equity for
insurance for you & your children? Are you willing to do YOUR part
to preserve & strengthen this organization for future generations'
sake? The time for decision is now.

President of AAAS Decries Disparity Facing AsAm Scientists

President of American Association for the Advancement of Science
(AAAS), which is the world's large science organization, Alice Huang,
decries disparity facing Asian American scientists. There were 1500
people in the audience during her Presidential Address. Many were
policy makers, media reporters and science leaders.

Alice Huang, also 80-20 Board member for many years, said
"A striking finding in recent data is that Asian Americans in
fields such as science "stand now as having the lowest chance
of success in rising to the management level, despite their
education and notable achievement." She urges science leaders
to study the reasons for this phenomenon and "do something
that narrows the disparity."

Alice is now the Chair of AAAS's Board.

Chenming Hu, another 80-20 Board Member, will also speak out on
that topic, when he'll receive the "Life Time Achievement" award at
the Asian American Engineer of the Year award event. Chenming is
the Distinguished Chair professor of electrical engineering at University of
California, Berkeley. He has received numerous internationally renowned
awards in electrical engineering.

Ted Lieu, another 80-20 EF Board Member, is now Senator Lieu of CA's
28th Senate District. Instead of "50% + 1 vote," he got 57% of the vote.

Honoring Fred Korematsu; Ted Lieu's race in CA

White House Blog Honors Fred Korematsu

Fred Korematsu, a Japanese American, fought valiantly for his civil
rights during the internment of Japanese Ams in WWII. He is a role
model for all Asian Americans.

No wonder a recent White House blog used Korematsu to illustrate a
key paragraph in Pres. Obama's 2011 State of Union speech. The blog
begins with that key paragraph and then mentioned the honoring of
Korematsu to boost the President's point:

"We are part of the American family. We believe that in a country
where every race and faith and point of view can be found, we are
still bound together as one people; that we share common hopes and a
common creed…” -- 2011 State of Union Address

In 1998 when President Clinton awarded Fred Korematsu the Medal of
Freedom, the highest civilian honor, Clinton stated, "In the long history of
our country's constant search for justice, some names of ordinary citizens
stand for millions of souls. Plessy, Brown, Parks … to that distinguished list,
today we add the name of Fred Korematsu."

In 1983, when his convict was finally overturned, Korematsu said, "If
anyone should do any pardoning, I should be the one pardoning the
government for what they did to the Japanese-American people."

Arizona's recent shooting tragedy, including the care of Congresswoman
Gabrielle Giffords . . . . .

How 80-20 Crossed this Inequity Barrier?

For the first time, the US Labor Dept. has agreed in writing to enforce
Executive Order 11246 for Asian Americans. Visit

An estimated 3 million Asian Americans will benefit in private
industries, universities, federal and state governments. When successfully
enforced, the number of Asian American managers/administrators will
double in about 10 years.

No meager achievement getting that written commitment! You may recall
that Elaine Chao, an Asian Am. and the Labor Secretary from 2001 to 2008,
refused to enforce that law for Asian Americans.

How did the "crossing of the inequity barrier" come about in 2010?

It was the culmination of 10 years of 80-20's tireless work that includes:

o establishing AsAm. bloc votes,
o inducing the presidential candidates to answer 80-20's questionnaires
with all yeses,
o having a sympathetic listener among the top ranking White House staff,
o getting Hilda Solis as the Labor Secretary whose office enforces E.O. 11246.
a former liberal Congresswoman whose parents were immigrant workers,
whose old congressional District has a large Asian American population,
o getting Patricia Shiu, a Chinese Am. lawyer from SF, to be the Director
of OFCCP, whose office directly enforces E.O. 11246
o getting Elizabeth Kim, a Korean Am. to be the White House liaison
stationed at the Labor Dept.
o getting a promised meeting with Pres. Obama to review results before
his next election.

Are all of the above 80-20's doings? NO! Did 80-20 work like a dog to
induce this general outcome? YES. You should see the dirt, sweat, and tears
on our faces. You should see our tears of joy when the written confirmation
to enforce EO 11246 came in.

Is equal opportunity for Asian Americans guaranteed as a result of the
achievements listed above? NO!!! We must forever be vigilant.
