Why does 80-20 insist on CONTESTED elections?
80-20 is also bold in adhering to democratic principles as an organization, e.g. requiring all its elective positions be CONTESTED to give its members a true choice.
Has this experiment worked? Splendidly! See how even its unsuccessful Board candidates have helped serve 80-20, since the election of 5 months ago. 80-20 salutes them.
Henry Liu of MO: Helped form TWO NEW chapters for 80-20:
A Mid Missouri chapter: 35 members.
A St. Louis chapter (working with Winnie Liu & Prof. Hung- Gay Fung): 25 members
Charles Zhang of Michigan: Joined as one of 5 members of the National Fundraising Committee, and gave another $3500 to become an Honorary Life Member.
Kam Liu of Chicago: Joined as one of the 5 Members of the National Fundraising Comm., and has volunteered to do a fundraiser for 80-20 in Chicago this year.
Joel Wong of SF: Is coordinating the 6 great Affiliates of 80-20 in North Calif. (CAPA, CPAC, CBC, VPAC, World Fed. Of Ch. Orgs. of Viet/Camb/Lao, and South Bay Voter Ed. Assoc.) for a bloc vote in 2004.
80-20 is setting a splendid tradition for itself and perhaps for t he entire APA community.
- - - - GOOD NEWS: Walter Wang, CEO, CEO of J-M Manufacturing & on the Board of Formosa Pastic Group, gave $5,000. Carter Tseng, another C-100 members like Walter Wang, became a Life Member. James Cheung, President of Agio Solutions, gave $2,000. Laura & Michael Ting joined as Life Members. A St. Louis 80-20 chapter has been formed!
James Cheung also wanted to buy ads on 80-20's web site to recruit employees for his company because he said, "IF THEY CARE ENOUGH TO JOIN 80-20, they should have a little more concern beyond their own self interest." Unfortunately, 80-20 is a PAC and can't accept corporate money which is to pay for the ad. But James' compliment to 80-20 members is much appreciated. :-)
ANNOUNCEMENT: If you'd like to meet S. B. Woo, he will be speaking (1) on 5/22 at a CAPA event in SF. Location: Walnut Creek Marriott Ticket & Info: 925 945-1901; EmilyChang@capa-new.org , and (2) on 5/29 in a seminar sponsored by the Census Advisory Committee on the Asian Population at Holiday Inn, Oakland-Int'l Airport, 500 Hegenberger Road, Oakland, CA 94621 For more details, please e-mail Jing at . (3) S.B. spoke at the U. of Connecticut on 4/26 & shall donate, as always, his speaker fee to 80-20, while bearing the tax burden himself.

How Magnificently Our Community Spoke!
- - - - - - - -
Unity is power. See below. We apologize for not being able to publicize hundreds of other e-mails & faxes.
See how EVERY COMPONENT of the Asian American community spoke up. See how VERY ACTIVE REPUBLICANS, including a member of the NRCC Business Council, and a student recently invited by V.P. Cheney to attend a national phone hook-up, and a radio personality, insist on a satisfactory answer to 80-20's questionnaire. We salute these individuals for their selfless effort on behalf of our community.

I did this not only because I support Bush/Cheney more than I support Kerry (for now, at least), but because I think 80-20's requests are valid.
I will attach a copy of one of my most recent letters both sent & emailed to Pres. Bush & Vice Pres. Cheney for your perusal.

Is Ignoring Pres. Bush Smart? Email him!
Now that Kerry has agreed to enforce E.O. 11246 if elected our president, PRESS HARD for Bush's agreement too. That way, whosoever wins the next election, we'll win our equal opportunity & see the number of APA executives/ senior partners/ administrators/ managers in all walks of life increase by 3 fold within about 10 years. Visit http://www.80-20.info/eo11246.html to see what E.O. 11246 is all about.
Some of you are NOT urging Bush to reply to 80-20s questionnaire, because you hope that Bush will NOT reply so that 80-20 will NOT endorse Bush. Is that smart?
(1) Has Democrat Party been so nice to the APA community? During the 1997 campaign finance scandal, which the New York Times termed the Asiagate, both parties competed to get as far away from us as possible.
(2) George W. Bush's APA appointments are larger in number & more significant in position, including 19 that required Senate confirmation, than Clinton's in 8 years. See: http://www.aapi.gov/resources/factapp.htm
(3) Are you sure that Bush will NOT be our next president? Is it worth a few minutes of your time to get him to promise enforcing EO 1246 too, if your guess is wrong?
80-20 is working so hard to bring maximum benefit to our community. YOU need to do your share too. So unite and email Bush.

CALL TO ACTION
On 1/19/04, Bush-Cheney headquarters wrote 80-20 saying that it might reply in March. March has come and gone.
80-20's questionnaire seeks his promise that upon his becoming our next president, he will enforce Exec. Order 11246 for us, a law that is already enforced for all Americans except for APAs. When enforced, the number of APA Executive/Administrators/Managers/ Senior Partners are estimated to increase 3 fold within 10 years. To view our questionnaire & Kerry's answers, visit: http://www.80-20initiative.net/preselect.html.
It is time for ALL OF US to let CANDIDATE Bush know that we will NOT consider his candidacy, if he is not willing to promise us equal opportunity. Specifically, we want to see his unambiguous answers to 80-20's questionnaire.
Fax or call "Bush-Cheney '04" :
Fax: (703) 647-2993 or (703) 647-2996 [Try till it's thru.] Phone: (703) 647-2700
1. Please address it to "Candidate George Bush" & ask him to answer 80-20's questionnaire, 2. State that you'll not consider his candidacy, unless he answers the questionnaire satisfactorily,

We deserve equal opportunity, but we must be willing to fight for it!! Do NOT give Bush's candidacy financial contribution or any other forms of aid. Fight for our children. They need the enforcement of E.O. 11246. Don't deter their interests.

Why is a bloc vote so powerful?
Two candidates run against each other in a hypothetical political district that has two constituent groups only. One group has 1 million voters and the other has 10 million voters. Candidate A, a novice, eagerly focuses on the large group, not being aware that the small constituent group has the internal political cohesion to deliver a bloc vote while the large group does not.
Candidate A wins the endorsement of most community leaders in the large group. When the ballots are open, he indeed wins in the large community. He wins 52% of that community's votes, while his opponent gets 48%. The difference between 52% and 48% is 4%. The large group has 10 millions votes. 4% of 10 million votes provides a "profit" of 400,000 votes to candidate A.
His opponent, candidate B, is a seasoned politician. She courts the small group and wins that little community by a ratio of 80 to 20, the namesake of The 80-20 Initiative. The difference between 80% and 20% is 60%. 60% of 1 million votes provides a "PROFIT" of 600,000 votes.
As a result, candidate B wins the election by 200,000 votes. That is the POWER OF A BLOC VOTE.
In California, the APA population is 1/9 that of the rest of the population, similar to the example given above.

Political Dirty Tricks Time
80-20 NEVER
- sends attachments or warns you about a virus via its mass e-mails,
- pushes pornography or physical enhancement,
- sells products, o takes a partisan stand (until we endorse in order to reward a presidential candidate who has done the better job to advance our rightful interests. An Endorsement Convention (EC) will be held. Delegates to EC are elected through an open & democratic election by all members),
- takes a stand on US foreign policy (80-20 has the right to take a stand, but we choose not to in order to avoid causing splits within the AsAm community), and
- changes its endorsement of a presidential candidate in the last days of the election season. Watch out for such a dirty trick, a day or two before November 2, 2004.
When you encounter a possible FAKE 80-20 emails that may have significant impact e.g. declaring a changed 80-20 presidential endorsement," please be so kind as to check with 80-20 by emailing jingliyu@earthlink.net as soon as possible. Thank YOU.
GOOD NEWS:
A Mid-Missouri 80-20 chapter has been formed under the capable leadership of Henry Liu, who ran for 80-20's 2004 Board but was unfortunately not elected. It has 35 members. 25 members is the minimum to become a chapter.

A Personal Appeal from S. B. Woo
I appeal to you to JOIN 80-20 as a member, if you have NOT already done so.
Won't you be a pillar of strength for our community? Won't you be that rare individual who is willing to sacrifice a little? Won't you show your leadership quality for the people around you? Many in our community have already demonstrated self-sacrifice & leadership.
Just this month, Shirley Young of Shirley Young Associates LLC sent 80-20 $5,000. Gareth Chang, our Nat'l Fundraising Chair, has given another $2,000 besides recruiting 11 Life Members: Paul Zee, Sue Zhang, Paul Chang, Jennie Vong, Leo and Ivey Chu, Andy and Joyce Lee, & two others who wish to be anonymous. Charles Zhang of Michigan, co-author of a highly praised McGraw Hill book entitled "Make Yourself a Millionaire,** sent $3500. That is not to mention that another 1100 persons who have ALREADY joined 80-20 by 3/19/04. See http://www.80-2 0initiative.net/memberlist2004.html
However, we aim to go from 2000+ members in 2003 to 3000 this year! This is the election year. This is the year when all our hard work of the past 6 years may be paying off. At this critical time, 80-20 must show a big increase in membership AND a big war chest to the political establishment. WON'T YOU PLEASE JOIN ME* to better our destiny?
See below for methods of payment. Equal opportunity in workplaces, partially through 80-20's effort, is within our reach, if YOU will do your share.
Most sincerely,
S. B. Woo President The 80-20 PAC, Inc.

I also changed my voter registration from "Dem." to "Indep." Lastly, I contributed at least $20,000 to 80-20 over those years. PLEASE JOIN 80-20 NOW.

Power of a BLOC VOTE, illustrated
Don't believe it? Read on!!
Two presidential candidates are contesting for CA, which for simplicity is assumed to have two constituent groups only. One group has only 1 million votes (8%) and the other has 11 million votes (92%). Candidate A decides to spend his resources on the larger group. Candidate B decides to spend his resources mostly courting the much smaller minority community that has the ability to deliver 80 % of its votes to its endorsed candidate, much like what the Jewish American and African American communities has done for decades.
When the ballots are counted, presidential candidate A wins the larger community by the ratio of 52/48. The margin of difference is 4%. Since the larger group has 11 millions votes, 4% of 11 million votes provides a winning margin of 440,000 votes to candidate A. Presidential candidate B, having won the endorsement of the minority community, won that community's vote by a ratio of 80 to 20. The difference between 80% and 20% is 60%. 60% of 1 million votes is 600,000 votes. As a result, presidential candidate B wins CA's 55 electoral votes by (600,000 minus 440,000) electoral votes 160,000 votes. Note that 55 electoral votes represent more than 20% of what a candidate will need to be the next President of the US.
Astounding? Yes. That is why 80-20 emphasizes a BLOC VOTE, and why 80-20 has been effective in gathering political clout on YOUR behalf. Unity is power, please help back.

Why A Bloc Vote Benefits YOU
Can YOU use more political clout? If your answer is YES, then knowing the following may help YOU besides the benefits coming to YOU from a BLOC VOTE.
1) Politics is the exchange of interests between YOU and someone else:
Hence if YOU want someone or entity to give you BIG interests, we need to give BIG interests back. To both political parties, there is NO bigger interest than winning the White House. Since our BLOC vote can significantly increase or diminish their chance to occupy the White House, they are willing to give BIG interest to us in return.
For example, we want to break the glass ceiling above us and our children, so we'll give a bloc vote to the president or presidential candidate who will enforce Exec. Order 11246 for us in return. In ten years, the enforcement of 11246 is estimated to INCREASE the number of Asian American executives/administrators/senior partners/ managers by 3 FOLD!
As a counter example, if our community contributes 5 million dollars to a presidential candidate, only 2.5% of what is needed to run a campaign, win or lose, we may at best get a number of sub-cabinet appointments, most of whom are eager to distance themselves from our community as soon as they are appointed.
2) Politics depend on large numbers.
Delivering 2000 votes may mean something in a city council election and gets you a contact in a zoning application. But in a presidential election, 2000 votes are in the noise level.
In contrast, delivering 600,000 Asian American votes in California may MAKE OR UNMAKE THE NEXT PRESIDENT and therefore win the enforcement of Exec. Order11246 for us in return. Note that 11246 has been enforced for all Americans EXCEPT us and our children. ARE YOUR MAD ENOUGH TO FIGHT?
80-20 has already gotten John Kerry to promise IN WRITING the enforcement of E.O. 11246 upon his becoming the President. George Bush has not. His campaign says that he'll answer this month. As the President, Mr. Bush can actually order the Labor Dept. to begin enforcing EO 11246 beginning TODAY! Join the Fight to get our equal opportunity. Whosoever helps us, we'll help back!
80-20 has 650,000 e-mail addresses, reaching about 50% or 1 million Asian American voters all in one day. It needs a large war chest in 2004 to deliver the BIG interests.

Will You Consider?
This is the election year. A big increase in membership will help GREATLY the case 80-20 is making for you and your children before the presidential candidates.
This is crunch time. 80-20 has already demonstrated unprecedented success on your behalf in matters big or small. Recall our recent emails to you entitled " ALL Dem. Presidential Candidates Answered Yes/Yes/Yes," and "Yao Ming Called A Chinaman." If you would join us at this critical moment, it'll be such an encouragement to all of us. President Bush has begun his campaign. We expect him to answer Yes/Yes/Yes also, to give you equal opportunity in workplaces. The best way to urge him to do so is your joining 80-20 TODAY. We are ahead of last year's pace in number of members and dollars, but we NEED a big big increase. That's the message that politicians understand!!!
Basic (1 vote) -- $35
Family (Two names to get 2 votes) -- $50
Life -- $1000

Easiest Way to Register & Vote
Otherwise, shame on you! Two types of citizens need to register:
(1) those who've never registered, and (2) having registered but have
moved to a new address.
Here is the EASIEST WAY to register to vote! It will be the most
meaningful 10 minutes you'll spend in your life for your offspring.
GO TO: https://ssl.capwiz.com/congressorg/nvra (If the letters are
in blue, put your cursor on it and click once. You'll be on page 1 to
register. If the letters have the same color as the text, then copy and
paste it to your browser. Then hit return or enter, you'll be on page 1.)
On page 1, you download Adobe Acrobat, if you don't already have
it. The downloading is free & automatic. Then go to the map
and click on your state. That leads you to page 2.
On page 2, fill out the form: check each square box on top and fill
in required info next to blanks with a red *. Click once on each of
the (Instructions) written in red to help you fill out the correct
information. For "Choice of Party," your choice is Republican, or
(Independent /Decline) or Democrat. For most states, if you want to
vote in the primary, you must choose either Dem. or Rep., although
some states (e.g. CA) allow independents to vote in EITHER party's
primary. Click on (Instructions) next to Choice of Party to find out
what choices you have. After you have filled the required information,
go to the bottom of the page to click on the "Preview My Voter
Registration" to go to page 3.
On page 3, you proofread the information, then click "Get My
Application" at the bottom of the page.
On page 4, follow the 4 simple steps and mail out your application
form.
Upon receiving your application, your state will mail you a voter
registration card. YOU NEED TO FILL THAT OUT AND MAIL IT IN. Only then
will you be truly registered. Note that registration is ALWAYS A
TWO-STEP PROCESS, whether you register via a web site or travel to a
registration place. When you actually vote, it is the 3rd & final step.
GO TO: https://ssl.capwiz.com/congressorg/nvra NOW!
Be a registered voter!!! Be one for your children's and grand-
children's sake.
When the "Voter Registration Card" comes, you may want to choose
to vote "absentee." That is, you can VOTE BY MAIL instead of going to a
polling place. Most states allow it. It is again the easiest way!!!
About 20 days before Nov. 2, you will receive a ballot on
which you may check whom to vote. Put the ballot in an envelop,
sign on the back side of the envelop, mail it and you will have
voted. You will have fulfilled you sacred duty as a citizen and TO
YOUR CHILDREN AS AN EDUCATED PERSON.
SAVE this e-mail & forward it to your relatives & friends. Thank
you.

Five Good Tidings and YOU
newspapers recently. An Associated Press article by Deborah Kong,
reported that 80-20's questionnaire to presidential candidates of 2004
got answers of Yes/Yes/Yes from ALL EXCEPT for Rev. Sharpton & Pres.
Bush. It also reports the frustrations of some APA civic orgs. for not
being paid much attention by the political establishment. The article
was carried in USA Today, SF Chronicle, Atlanta Journal Constitution
and many other large papers in the nation. For the USA Today article,
see http://www.usatoday.com/news/politicselections/nation/2004
-02-12-asian-americans_x.htm.
Good News 2: Two editors-in-chief of APA student newspapers in two
large universities, each with thousands of APA students, have joined 80-
20 as members. That is GREAT SUPPORT FROM OUR YOUTH. We
didn't have that in the 2000 election.
Good News 3: Steve Davis, formerly the national news editor of USA
Today, now chair of the newspaper department, Syracuse University; S.I.
Newhouse School of Public Communication and the first author of "Click on
Democracy: Internet's Power to Chang Political Apathy into Civic
Action" just e-mailed to invite S. B. Woo, President of 80-20 to be a
speaker in a Conference organized by the Syracuse University on the
impact of Internet on politics in the USA. The Univ. pays for travel
expenses and accommodations. 80-20 should be able to REACH A
LOT OF THE MEDIA FOLKS during that conference in coming July,
JUST 4 months before the election.
Good News 4: 80-20's NJ chapter had a inaugural event on 2/21.
Its new President is Ved Chaudhary, who was interviewed by an Indian
Am TV station about the importance of 80-20 a few days ago.
Good News 5: The China station of Voice of America requested a TV
interview with 80-20 regarding Chinese American involvement in the
2004 Presidential Election. 80-20 has been interviewed by VOA via
radio, but a TV interview is a first. 80-20 President S. B. Woo has
accepted the invitation, while noting that 80-20 is an Asian American
Organization.
80-20 is doing well. But it needs to do great! It need YOU. Any

YOU & the making of the next US president
may just decide who will be the next US president. Here is why.
First: In 2000, 80-20 endorsed Gore getting 70% of the APA voters
in CA to go for Gore, and Bush lost CA by 12 points. In 2004, if 80-20
endorses the Dem. nominee again, CA will likely remain safely in the
Democrats' column. On the other hand, if 80-20 will endorse Bush,
Bush will probably need to make up 4 points ONLY in order to win CA.
California will become a hotly contested state! If Bush wins CA's 55
electoral votes, the race for the White House will be over for the
Democrats.
Second: YOU can be one of the less than 100 Delegates to 80-20's
EC, if you are a dues-paying member, run for a Delegate position and win.
Whom 80-20 will endorse is decided by those Delegates.
Once, you become a Delegate to 80-20's EC, your one vote in the
EC will probably have more impact on the making of our next
president than sum of 50,000 votes cast by other citizens.
Phenomenal responsibility !
So please carefully consider whether you want to be a Delegate. See
Article 7 of 80-20's Bylaws which describes its endorsement procedure.
http://www.80-20initiative.net/bylaw.html#7 It is a very fair and open
process aiming to serve the best interests of the APA community.
80-20 will call for candidates to run for Delegates soon.

Reader's Reaction To The Yao Ming Episode
of 3 emails. The reaction to the first mass email was mixed. After 80-
20's second e-mail, a typical response reads as 1) below. 80-20 is very
heartened by the great response from every corner of our nation.
1) A Typical Response: Hi Dr. Woo: Happy New Year! I just want
to congratulate you and your organization for the great job you have
done for the Asian community!! It's about time for the Chinese and the
Asian community as a whole to have a strong voice such as yours to
speak up for them. I have passed on information about 80-20 to all my
friends and associates and strongly encouraged them to join. We thank
you and appreciate for all you and your staff have done for the Asian
community. S. Ung
2) From Many Supporters: Chinaman is NOT analogous to Englishman
and Frenchman. Try calling them Englandman and Franceman, and
see how others will react. (Editor's note: A good point. Thank you.)
3) From a Korean American: My name is Jason Kwah. I am
an Asian Pacific American of Korean descent living in New York
City. I would just like to commend you for a job well done in
handling this incident. I'll admit that upon first hearing about it, I
thought it might have been blown a bit out of proportion. However,
you provided a thorough explanation that helped me understand the
importance of addressing this incident. I can also tell that it was
handled with a great deal of tactfulness and respect, given Steve
Kerr's genuine and heartfelt response. Thank you very much for all of
your hard work. Take care. Jason Kwah
4) From anonymous: Initially, I did not appreciate your emails. I
wondered why I was being sent these emails, and treated them as spam.
However, the story of Ling Sing was quite striking... and I read up more
about it on the internet. I still have mixed feelings about such issues
being publicized, because sometimes, as in this case, a person did not
know that the word "chinaman" was derogatory.. and indeed compared
to other terms like "n**ger", it does seem very mild.... but I am also
happy that you are taking this effort to make us all better informed. We
must be educated about the kind of tyranny and terrorism that was
inflicted upon non-white people in the past. anonymous
5) From Kerry Undell: I am not of Asian descent, being an anglo
american, and don't know why i got on your mail list . However i decided
to remain on it, in some form of support of your efforts. I have admired
your seeming integrity in support of Asian culture and community. I am
surprised that some americans would not know of the derogatory nature of
this term (Chinaxxx). However, Mr. Kerr seems to want to handle it in a
most appropriate manner. I pray you are able to continue as a positive
influence in the Asian global community. Kerry Undell
6) From Mick Pinckney: I have read everyone of your e-mails over the
past months and find them most interesting, informative, and most of all
on target. However I must tell you that i'm not Asian .but have spent a
lot of time in Asia and have great respect of the people. I think we can all
learn a little something and I feel i learn something from each of your
updates. Would like to continue to receive your updates. but if by myself
not being of Asian descent precludes me i understand. Thanx.
Mick Pinckney [Editor's Note: All US citizens and PRs who
are sympathetic to our cause are welcome to subscribe!]
**** Please do NOT give financial or other forms of support to Mr. Bush's

Yao Ming/Next US President/SARS
HERE IS WHY.
(1) 80-20 Protects You From Being Discriminated:
On 5/10/2003, at the height of SARS scares, 5 Asian Am.
teachers were turned away by 2 NJ schools from fulfilling their
CONTRACTUAL obligations. Imagine if you are told to go home
from your work, because people of Asian descent are the prime
suspects owing to the SARS hysteria. Such a precedent must
NOT be allowed.
80-20 NEGOTIATED on the phone (not just writing a letter)
with the school superintendent to get 1) a public apology, 2) back
pay, 3) reinstitution of the program, and 4) a school district-wide
educational program to combat SARS hysteria.
(2) 80-20 Opens Your Path To Equal Opportunity:
All viable Democratic presidential candidates pledged in writing
that upon being the president they will enforce E.O. 11246 to
provide equal opportunity in workplaces for Asian Americans.
Currently it is enforced for all other Americans except us.
80-20 is confident that President Bush will soon sign it too.
At least, the National Chairman of AAPI for Bush/Cheney 2004,
John Tsu, agreed, as was reported in the 1/17/04 issue of The
World Journal.
In ten years, the number of APA Exec/Administrators is
estimated to increase by a factor of 3. The glass-ceiling
shall be shattered!
(3) 80-20 Protects Your Personal Dignity:
The N-gger word is no longer used against blacks. Words like
Chinaman, Jap & Chink will not be used against you with
impunity so long as 80-20 is around. 80-20 has the leadership to
protect your dignity effectively, while turning those who had
used those words inadvertently into friends.
You have yearned for a powerful APA organization to stand up for
you. You've got it in 80-20, although our mission is not yet
accomplished. NOW PLEASE PUT YOUR SHOULDERS BEHIND
80-20 AND PUSH! Do YOUR share.
Any US citizen or P.R. may JOIN NOW, using a credit card:

http://www.80-20.info/membership.html .

PART II of Yao Ming Called A "Chinaxxx, "
THE FIRST GROUP of responses were most positive. They thanked
80-20 for standing up for our community and its great effectiveness.
THE SECOND GROUP were from APAs who were puzzled over why
Chinaxxx was a bad term; some even accused 80-20 of being too
sensitive. A typical response was: "I was from China. I am a man.
What is wrong with being called a Chinaxxx? Why are Frenchman and
Englishman acceptable, but not Chinaxxx?"
Such questions probably came mostly from first generation
immigrants. Their puzzlement is most understandable. 80-20 uses
this occasion to let our diverse community -- from the 1st to perhaps
the 6th generation immigrants – know why the term Chinaman is
derogatory.
The English language is defined by its dictionaries, not by
individuals. The most authoritative dictionary in English is Webster.
Webster (10th edition) defines
N-gger: a black person - usu. taken to be offensive;
Chinaman: Chinese - often taken to be offensive.
The term "Chinaxxx" has a long & sad history in this country.
Chinaman didn't have a bad connotation a long time ago. It was
used just like Englishman and Frenchman. However, in 1853,
conviction of killers for the murder of Ling Sing was OVERturned on
the grounds that testimony from the "INFERIOR CASTE OF PEOPLE WHO
WERE NON-CITIZENS, " should be thrown out. It meant that Chinese
testimony against the whites was not admissible. Once that legal
precedent was set, the whites learnt that they could terrorize Chinese
without fear of legal consequences. Numerous such incidents
happened. Thereafter, the phrase "not a Chinaxxx's chance" was
coined, meaning "not much of a chance." The word "Chinaxxx"
became an offensive term to Chinese Americans and probably to all
Chinese.

LETTER OF APOLOGY FROM MR. STEVE KERR:
Mr. Steven Kerr who reacted to his inadvertent mistake admirably
just requested that I publicize his letter of apology. He told me that
he has reached Yao Ming who has accepted his apology. His letter
which reached me this morning, after his verbal apology of yesterday
is shown below. I hope that our entire community will now accept his
apology.
"Dear Mr. Woo,
First of all, let me apologize again for my mistake during
Monday night's telecast. I have felt horrible all day long today
knowing that I offended many people. I assure you I was
unaware that my choice of words was inappropriate, and in no
way did I use it maliciously. As I mentioned earlier, I was using
the term the same way I would use 'Frenchman' or 'Englishman',
and I was totally unaware that the word I used is a derogatory
one dating back to the 19th century.
I am ashamed of what happened, especially since I take great
pride in being extremely open minded and tolerant. I have
spent a good part of my life living in foreign countries and I
have respect for all cultures, races and religions. My sister in law
is Chinese American, and my brother in law is a respected
Chinese history scholar at Cambridge University in England.
One of my best friends, in fact, is also Chinese American. I called
them all today to explain what happened.
Anyway, I have already planned to apologize to Yao Ming, and
I will attempt to call him today. As you know he is a difficult
person to reach, but I will do my best to talk to him, or at least
to his interpreter Cxxxx Pxxx. I will let you know if I'm able to
contact Yao Ming. In the meantime, I wish you the best of luck
and I apologize again for this matter.
Also, thank you very much for not making this a public issue.
I realize that you have every right to do so, and the fact that
You have not is saving me great embarrassment. Thank you so
much for that. I will do my best to let people know that the
phrase I used is inappropriate because of the context in which it
was used in the past.
Sincerely,
Steve Kerr"

Yao Ming Called A Chinaxxx
(1) At 3:00 p.m. today, 80-20 obtained concrete evidence that Steve Kerr, a TNT broadcaster, described Ming Yao as a "7'6" Chinaman." At 4:15 p.m., 80-20- staff Jing-Li Yu left words with the secretary of TNT CEO, Philip I. Kent, that 80-20 President S. B. Woo wanted to be called regarding the incident.
At 5:45 p.m., TNT Senior VP Jeff Banky and Broadcaster Steve Kerr called S. B. at his home and apologized profusely. They asked him to in turn convey their apologies to the Asian American community. It seemed obvious that Kerr didn't know that Chinaman, unlike Frenchman and Englishman, was a derogatory term. S.B. accepted the apology with the condition that Mr. Kerr also called Ming Yao to apologize. S.B. also requested that Mr. Kerr to publicize, whenever appropriate, the impropriety of using derogatory terms in describing minorities. Mr. Kerr agreed. 80-20 TURNED A NEGATIVE CASE INTO A POSITIVE ONE IN 2 HOURS AND 45 MINUTES.
(2) A couple of months ago, General Wesley Clark also inadvertently used Chinaman together with the term Frenchman in an radio interview. Upon an e-mail from S. B., Gen. Clark called S.B. at his home to apologize. SB was impressed with General Clark's sincerity and his sensitivity towards minority concerns. ANOTHER INSTANCE THAT 80-20 TURNS A NEGATIVE EVENT TO A POSITIVE ONE.
(3) After learning about General Clark's apology, An Army Major e- mailed SB to let him know that a terrain in the Army map of Fort Irwin in the California Mojave Desert is designated "Chinaman's Hat." Upon learning that S. B. requested Julia Wan, a new Board Member to work with the Army to delete the name. A month ago, Brigadier General Joseph Fil, Jr. e-mailed Julia stating "The computerized data base from which they (the maps in question) are produced has already been changed, and no longer contains the Chinaman's Hat moniker. " YET ANOTHER HAPPY CASE HANDLED BY 80-20 ON BEHALF OF OUR COMMUNITY.

ALL Dem. Candidates Answered Yes/Yes/Yes
James Chang of Newport Beach, CA just became our 100th Life
Member. He upgraded his Basic membership to LIFE membership. The
stock market is up. 80-20's achievement is worthy of your support.
Hope that YOU will consider supporting as a Life Member (from $1000
to $10,000 per membership). Together we shall overcome.
See http://www.80-20initiative.net/members.html
(B) Grand Slam in winning over Dem. presidential candidates:
ALL viable Democratic presidential candidates responded to 80-20's
questionnaire with yes/yes/yes. They are, in order of promptness in
response, where (1) means the earliest:
(1) Congressman Dennis Kucinich, (2) Governor Howard Dean,
(3) Amb. Carol Braun (dropped out) (4) Senator John Edwards,
(5) General Wesley K. Clark, (6) Senator John Kerry
(7) Senator Joe Lieberman, and (8) Congressman Dick Gephardt
If a Democrat is elected the president in 2004, the federal
government will employ its immense power through Executive
Order 11246 to help Asian Americans break the glass ceiling. We
estimate that in 10 years the number of Asian Americans in the
Executive/Administrators rank will increase by a factor of 3 in
all mainstream corporations/ firms/ universities/ institutions/
governments.
Unfortunately, Mr. George W. Bush, the only Republican running
for president in 2004, has not yet responded to 80-20's questionnaire.
As a result, 80-20 urges Asian Americans to
(a) vote for any of the above 8 candidates during the Democratic
PRIMARY elections, taking into account their promptness in
answering the questionnaire
(b) withhold financial and other forms of support from Mr.
Bush's 2004 campaign until he has responded with yes/yes/yes to
80-20's questionnaire.
If Mr. Bush also answers yes/yes/yes, then, whoever gets elected in
Nov., our children will get equal opportunity in workplaces.
So hold firm. Don't contribute to Mr. Bush, UNTIL he responds
positively. Any APA who gives to his campaign before he responds
positively is hurting OUR CHILDREN'S chance to win equal opportunity!
PASS THAT MESSAGE.
The above rules do NOT apply in the GENERAL election. After
each major party has elected a nominee, 80-20 will hold an
Endorsement Convention. Delegates to the Convention will be elected
from and by our dues-paying members. The composition of Delegates
shall be 1/3 Republicans, 1/3 Independents and 1/3 Democrats. The
endorsement criteria shall be DEEDS done by either party in the
preceding 4 years, and the response to 80-20's questionnaire. For
details see Article 7 of 80-20's Bylaws. Please visit
http://80-20initiative.net/bylaw.html . TOGETHER, we'll overcome.
