Step-by-Step Voter Registration Guide
Are you registered to vote? Two types of citizens need to register: (1) those who've never registered, and (2) having registered but have moved to a new address. Please fulfill your obligation as a citizen and an Asian American.

Here is the EASIEST way to register to vote!

On page 1, go to the map and click on your state. That leads you to page 2.

On page 2, fill out the form: check each square box on top and fill in required info next to blanks with a red *. Then click on the "Preview My Voter Registration" to go to page 3.

On page 3, you proofread the informat 743 ion, then click "Get My Application" or download at the bottom of the page.

Upon receiving your application, your state will mail you a voter registration card. YOU NEED TO FILL THAT OUT AND MAIL IT IN. Only then are you truly registered. Note that registering to vote is ALWAYS A TWO-STEP PROCESS, whether you register via a website or travel to a registration place.

When the "Voter Registration Card" comes, you may want to choose to vote Absentee. That is you can VOTE BY MAIL instead of going to a polling place. Most states allow "vote by mail." About 20 days before Nov. 2, you will receive a ballot on which you may check whom to vote. Put the ballot in an envelope, sign on the back side of the envelope, mail it and you will have voted. You will have fulfilled your sacred duty to YOUR CHILDREN, and as an EDUCATED person and a citizen.

Are AsAms Selfish to Put Their Civil Rights Interests First?

Each click by you and your friends bring us closer to the 10,000-donor show-of-strength. Won’t you help make AsAms a force in this election by breaking that vicious cycle of political apathy?  We don’t lack in population size but lack participation and discipline.  Many smart individuals can add to collective irrelevancy if the voting ratio is a 50/50 split.  When politicians see that, they ignore us.

Are we selfish to put our civil rights interests first?  

This is a concern voiced by some as they approach this crucial election year, and is unfounded and without basis because it incorrectly assumes a zero-sum society in which if AsAms do better, other ethnic groups would proportionately suffer.

If Susan B. Anthony did not single-mindedly champion women’s rights . . . if Martin Luther King did not resolutely toil for civil rights for Blacks . . .  where would this nation be?  Consequently, ALL Americans benefit and stand on the shoulder s of these giants who made this nation better for all, ONE issue at a time.  It is time for AsAms to unite and do the same.   

AsAms have long endured an ignominious history of suffering and discrimination (from the Chinese Exclusionary Act to the Japanese Internment, from denial of service benefits to Filipino veterans after WWII, to over four decades of grievously delayed enforcement of Equal Opportunity (EO 11246), etc..  As a result, AsAms have been denied the same equal opportunity that the majority of Americans enjoy, to become all that they are capable of being and to contribute fully to building a better and stronger America.  This is not only injustice, it is detrimental to our nation.  It hurts not just AsAms, it deprives this nation of a full measure of the industrious perseverance, technological ingenuity, and job-creating entrepreneurship that AsAm are famous for.  

Lastly, we cannot forget the senseless prejudice-induced deaths of Vincent Chin, Denny Chen and Harry Lew.  In our Quest for Equality and Justice, their tragic deaths must not be in vain.  Therefore, to passionately champion AsAm civil rights is a patriotic duty that we ALL must bear and carry out with determination.

If WE do not put AsAm civil rights issues front, center and foremost in our political goals, then WHO will???

Even setting aside the compelling patriotic duty, there remains our moral duty to future generations of AsAms.  As a minority group FAR FAR smaller than women in the 19th Century or the Blacks in the 1960’s, we have even less political clout based on numbers.  The ONLY way we can free our children and grandchildren for this grievous history of injustice and inequality is to use our bloc vote to actively support those politicians willing to rectify these issues, and to defeat those who (through action or inaction) choose to continue that inequality.

After thoughtful review, a bipartisan panel of elected Republican, Democratic and Independent delegates of NAAPAC decided to endorse President Obama for another term in recognition of the landmark civil rights progress for AsAm he has delivered as promised.

NAAPAC is calling on all it supporters as well as their friends and families to show the Obama campaign the unity and strength of the AsAm bloc support by donating the unique amount of $5.82/person/week.  If you are able, please donate $80.20/week through everyone in your household in the remaining weeks until election time.

  

It is the NECESSARY thing to do, the right thing to do.  And it is the PATRIOTIC thing to do.

The goal of swinging 80% of the AsAm votes to one candidate is the namesake of 80-20's mission. In this billion dollar election cycle, the actual dollar amount has little significance. However, a flood of uniquely identifiable $5.82 donations is a clear indication of AsAms resolve to deliver a bloc vote as a vehicle to win equal rights. 80-20 Convention Endorses Obama

Dear Fellow Asian Americans and Friends,

Vote for Obama in 2012 Election!

80-20 National Asian American Political Action Committee (NAAPAC) held its Endorsement Convention on August 26, 2012 at the Hilton Los Angeles Airport.  Thirty three delegates comprising of 11 Republicans, 11 Independents, and 11 Democrats were elected by the 80-20 membership.  Although Republicans comprise only about 15% of the Asian American voters, 80-20 allocated a full 1/3 of the delegate seats to them.  As usual, this was one of the many extraordinary efforts made by 80-20 to reach out to the Republican candidate, but received no response from the Romney campaign.  Following a secret ballot by the Convention delegates, 80-20 NAAPAC announced that it endorses Obama with an overwhelming majority of delegate votes. Henceforth, delegates agreed to unanimously support the Obama campaign.

Why?

Obama has won our support through action.

 

During his first term President Obama began to include APA in the enforcement of Exec. Order 11246 so that Asian Americans can finally have an equal opportunity to rise in workplaces according to their skill and merit. This is the first time in the history of the United States that any President has acted to enforce EO 11246 for Asian Americans. During the Bush Era, Labor Secretary Elaine Chao refused to enforce EO 11246 in spite of repeated appeals by 80-20 and other Asian Americans organizations.

President Obama has also appointed many preeminent Asian American jurists to the federal courts, more than doubling the number of Asian American federal judges from 8 in 2008 to 17 today, including two on the Appeals court.

I Have a Dream…

Dear Fellow Asian Americans and Friends,

The current “race conscious” college admissions policy is Anti-affirmative action, as shown in this poignant cartoon.

It requires AsAm students to vastly outperform the whites for equal opportunity.  It took a “two wrongs make it a right” approach to surreptitiously pass the burden of correcting “historical injustice” (that the whites committed against the minorities) onto the silent AsAm community. It is a “white man’s burden” carried by AsAm students.

80-20 stands firmly for equality, the most fundamental American value. 

All people must be judged by individual merits. In college admissions, individual merits should be broadly defined to include academic qualification necessary for successful college learning, and personal character strengths such as perseverance, good work ethic, leadership skills, and individual initiative to overcome adverse conditions. The last point would help the true needy but worthy students, rather than wealthy students who happen to have the right skin colors, as the current race-conscious policy tends to deliver.

Race and ethnicity are immutable group characteristics that an individual cannot change, therefore cannot possibly be a personal merit no matter how broadly defined.  The current race-conscious policy creates resentment and stigmatizes the so-called beneficiaries.  It breeds cynicism and invites abuse (“Elizabeth Warren”, anyone who have undocumented 1/32 heritage of the right kind?).  Worst of all, it hurts American competitiveness while masking over deep-rooted social problems, thereby permanently condemning some minority groups it supposed to help.

More than a generation has passed since Dr. King’s speech, why is his dream slipping further away all the time?

Dr. King and Chief Justice Roberts get it.  This is why we appeal to the Supreme Court to reconsider that current race-conscious practice in college admission.

Who is Perpetuating Racial Discrimination Against AsAm Students?

The schools are smart, they know the best defense for race conscious policies is to portray all minorities love it.  Vocal AsAm allies create just that impression. 

Watch this AsAm legal counsel for Univ. of Texas (UT) publicly proclaiming “Fisher v. UT Austin” to be without any merit during the critical period the Supreme Court was evaluating whether to take up Fisher’s petition. Fortunately the Supreme Court did NOT listen to him.

With “Fisher” moving forward, many AsAm orgs rushed to the schools’ rescues ONCE AGAIN!

They DID it in the past

APALC and its affiliates filed an amicus brief in support of Univ. of Michigan’s race-conscious admissions program in the 2003 Supreme Court case, “Grutter v. Bollinger”, insisting AsAms are “not harmed by” but rather “benefited from” such practice.  Thanks to APALC, the “Grutter” decision opened the flood gate to enhanced race-conscious policies many schools practiced over the last 9 years that your children and grand-children currently enjoy:  UT Austin announced on the VERY SAME DAY of the “Grutter” decision that it would RE-INTRODUCE race/ethnicity into college admission, which led to the current “Fisher v. UT Austin” case.  When the “Fisher” case was at the US Fifth Circuit court in 2010, APALC and its affiliates promptly filed an amicus brief again, ensuring the upholding of “race conscious” policy which has now reached the Supreme Court.

Emboldened by “Grutter”, AALDEF and its affiliates filed an amicus brief to extend race-conscious admissions policy into K-12 education.  In the 2007 Supreme Court cases “Parents v. Seattle School District” and “Meredith v. Jefferson”, they argued for the school districts’ racial balancing plan.  Under such a policy, a student could be bused to other school districts if the school across the street reached the predetermined racial quota.  Imagine the agony of AsAm parents who literally sacrificed everything to move into a good school district only to find that their children really need to “benefit from” forced racial integration into a bad school district.

Now they are doing it AGAIN

APALC and AALDEF have publicly announced they will file an amicus brief YET AGAIN at the Supreme Court (August 13^th deadline).  If they are as successful as they have been in the past, you can be rest assured that your children and grand-children will “benefit from” the race conscious college admissions policy for the next quarter century.

In preparation, AALDEF issued a press release on June 25 titled “The Majority of AsAms Support Race-Conscious Admissions Policies”, aimed specifically to discredit 80-20EF’s historic open & neutral survey of 50,000 people showing overwhelming AsAm support for race-neutral, merit-based college admissions.

Our response is simple: Why don’t we work together to conduct a large-scale AsAms survey specifically on college admissions, designed by professionals, monitored by neutral third parties, and open to all AsAms, to find out who is lying?

If you disagree with the APALC and AALDEF stance, please let them know their upcoming amicus brief will do immeasurable harm to AsAm interests, especially if it creates the impression “The Majority of AsAms Support Race-Conscious Admissions Policies”, as AALDEF publicly proclaimed.

Dear Fellow Asian Americans and Friends,

Celebrate July 4^th with a Flag!

On July 4^th, help celebrate the founding of a great nation, OUR NATION, the United States of America, by displaying a flag at your home.  Legality aside, the essence of citizenship is the pride of ownership.  It means we owe our primary allegiance to the USA while celebrating the vitality of our ethnic communities and preserving our cherished cultural heritages.  It means we stand up and fight for our rights as full-fledged citizens.  It means we are equal partners in making this great nation a more perfect union.  But are we?

AsAms must shatter the “perpetual foreigner” image before we can become first-class citizens.

Don’t just blame others for bias: Are you behaving like a citizen? No amount of enlightenment by others would help if you think, talk and act like a refugee in a foreign land.  As the proverb put it well, “If it walks like a duck, quacks like a duck, looks like a duck, it is a duck.”

“Refugee mentality” is a state of mind that makes you a foreigner regardless of your citizenship status.

It affects a person’s conduct, yet has nothing to do with his education attainment, professional development, family income or wealth.  Many “model minority” individuals, suffer the same “refugee mentality” as would a destitute, despite being in the top 10% income bracket and living in suburban McMansions:  Constant insecurity about job and financial well-being, exclusive focus on immediate family needs, look at everything from a “what’s in it for me” perspective, don’t give away anything to anyone, don’t care or get involved in the community, don’t dare to defend own rightful interests lest it would step on toes and cause a backlash, and above all, avoid “dirty” politics like the plague.  Then look around and wonder why are we looked upon as perpetual foreigners, why our children face the highest bar to college, and why our adults face the lowest ceiling?

Look around your friends and look at yourself.  Look no further:

“First-class citizenship” is an ideal that germinates in your heart and emanates through your actions.

The change is in you!

WSU Settled $650,000 Lawsuit with AsAms Employees

Dear Fellow Asian Americans and Friends, 

Are you being treated fairly at work or school? Do you know someone being discriminated due to their ethnicity? Forward this to your colleagues and administrators.

Washington State University (WSU) just settled a race-discrimination lawsuit brought by two Chinese American employees who are husband and wife.* Their lab supervisor subjected them to overt racial discrimination for years, including forbidding them to speak Mandarin to each other during breaks. When they complained, their supervisor retaliated by excluding them from work routines; among other punishments. Severe consequences ensued for their employer ONLY because the victims spoke up.

As a direct result of their courageous stand against discrimination:

o WSU settled for $650K.
o WSU settled with US EEOC (Equal Employment Opportunity Commission) with campus-wide mandatory anti-discrimination training.
o The supervisor was fired.

Do you see parallel to the battles we are fighting for?

o In the "Land of the Free and the Brave", silent suffering, an "Asian value", is detrimental!
o "When in Rome, do what the Romans do". We no longer live under the authoritarian governments that many of us originally came from. Use the powerful legal and civil resources this country has to offer.
o When and ONLY WHEN you stand up for your rightful interest, can you get the equality and justice you deserve.

Dear Fellow Asian Americans and Friends,

80-20 will hold its Endorsement Convention (EC) on Sunday August 26, 2012 in Los Angeles.

Who will we endorse?  It will be fiercely debated and decided by 33 delegates, comprised of 11 Democrats, 11Republicans, and 11 Independents.

Who can be a delegate?  Any current dues-paying member can run for delegate, our 3000+ members will vote to elect the most qualified candidates.

Will I be reimbursed for my travel expenses?  No!  Show your spirit of community service.  We are a volunteer organization that focuses limited funding on important projects (such as college admission).  Our board members and officers know all along that to service is to sacrifice your own money and precious family time, and expect nothing in return.

Then why should I bother?  Show the courage of your conviction to make your voices heard.  Our community has more than our share of whiners, critics, do-nothingers who are never happy with anything other people do.  Why don’t YOU come and change things for the better?

Too Smart!

Dear Fellow Asian Americans and Friends,

Our Amicus brief has generated a storm of mainstream media coverage and elevated the plight of AsAm students into a central argument in the main Fisher brief to the Supreme Court

When we launched the College Survey, many were skeptical, wondering aloud on-line:

o "Something that takes just a minute CANNOT be good or effective."
o "It's a joke! Don't waste your time!"
o "Since when does the Supreme Court care about AsAm opinions?"

Many smart people talked themselves and their friends into DOING NOTHING, not a minute to waste for the community, thus make true of a self-fulfilling fallacy that we are voiceless and powerless. We salute the 50,000+ who stepped forward to get their voices heard. They are our heroes regardless of whether they are FOR or AGAINST the 80-20 position!

80-20 poured in thousands hours into the preparation so that you can be effective by spending just a minute.

o Early 2011: Background research and internal deliberation
o Dec 2011: Board vote, survey preparation, AsAm college data compilation
o Feb 2012: Worked with award-winning journalists to put the AsAm data into the national media in an effort to induce the Supreme Court to take up the case
o Mar 2012: Rolled out the historical survey upon the Supreme Court decision, and firmly documented that AsAms prefer race-neutral with a 52:1 ratio to guard against imposters who would claim they represent you to the contrary.
o Mar 2012: Identified experienced constitutional lawyer to not only write our brief but also to incorporate the AsAm plight into the main Fisher brief.
o Apr 2012: Identified Jewish partner to establish the historical perspective on how the harm of discrimination flows from one community to the other without remedial purpose.
o May 2012: Filed the brief, held a press conference in the Nat'l Press Club in D.C. to generate media blitz and launched a campaign in public opinions.

The hardest battle is not in the Court; it is in your heart.

We Asian Americans tend to outsmart ourselves into DOING NOTHING except for our immediate families.

o Through our apathy, we consent our youth to face much higher barrier than others.
o Through our apathy, we consent others to claim we all support "race conscious" policy.
o Through our apathy, we let the lonely voice of 80-20 to wither.

No longer can we afford the apathy and "suffer-in-silence" tendency of the past. To do so is to shirk our personal responsibility and actively lay the groundwork for continued discrimination and harm, and shackle the future for our children.

Are you with David or Goliath?

Dear Fellow Asian Americans and Friends,

80-20 Filed Supreme Court Brief on May 29th, the plaintiff-side deadline. http://www.80-20educationalfoundation.org/pdf/amicus-brief.pdf

The battle is NOT won. We face formidable opponents with unlimited resources. UT Austin paid $977,000 to retain Latham & Watkins LLP, a 2,000-lawyer firm with 31 offices who successfully defended the 2003 Grutter case, which in turn leads to the current  case: Fisher vs. UT Austin. There is no doubt L&W will coordinate dozens of Amicus briefs vigorously defending the current race-
conscious policy, and the briefs will include some AsAm groups who are determined to ensure you and your children would enjoy the status quo for another 20 years.

FIVE AsAm groups have announced they will file Amicus briefs to support the race-conscious policy:

o The Asian American Legal Defense and Education Fund (AALDEF) (Margaret Fung, info@aaldef.org)
o Asian American Institute (AAI),
o Asian American Justice Center (AAJC),
o Asian Law Caucus (ALC), and
o Asian Pacific American Legal Center (APALC)

We are in an uphill battle like David v. Goliath (the Jewish boy v. the Philistine Giant), only with a twist: Imagining some Jews block David's path, argue that Goliath may well be their best friend. Furthermore, they contend they represent all Jews. Can David still win?

A house divided cannot stand. The Supreme Court may well believe the silent 15 million AsAms largely support the race-conscious policy, as these AsAm groups contend. Many other AsAm groups may join these five before the end of August deadline for the defendant (UT Austin) side.


The burden to fight for the interest of 15 million AsAms cannot rest only on the shoulders of 3000+ dues-paying 80-20 members. We may fail precisely because your silence emboldens these AsAm groups to fight against your interest with impunity. You can make a difference. Join 80-20 Today!

Hepatitis Awareness That Saves Lives

Dear Fellow Asian Americans and other Friends,

May is both API Heritage Month and Hepatitis Awareness Month.  The dual observances bring attention to a problem disproportionately affecting Asian Americans:

• AsAms are 5% the US population but 50% the estimated 1.2 million Americans living with chronic hepatitis B virus.
• 1 in 12 AsAms are infected; ~15-40% of those could develop liver cirrhosis or cancer.
• Most infected don’t know, because it can go decades without symptoms.
• Long latency period can put your loved ones at risk, transmitting the disease to spouse and young children.
• Vaccine is available, and has cut new infection by 95% since 1990.
• Early diagnosis saves lives and protects health.

Have you ever known an Asian Am. organization that is as gutsy and faithful as 80-20 in serving your interest???

Or are we simply delusional? The single person, who anonymously posted ~40 negative messages on the EF blog, claimed the silent 15 million AsAms are with him, secretly longing for race conscious college admissions. 50,000+ survey participants DO NOT count, he demanded, stop representing AsAms. His view, through his allies, would be registered with the Supreme Court as the voice of the AsAms if 80-20 does not file our brief advocating "race-neutral, merit-based" college admission. Do you now understand why AsAm interests are often short changed? The May 28 filing deadline is looming, are you willing to do your part? We can fight for your interest because we are financially supported directly by individuals like you. We do not take outside funding that can cloud our judgment.

Dear Fellow Asian Americans and other Friends,

Don't give $$$ to any presidential candidates yet. Wait till 80-20 has endorsed one of the two. When we act as a bloc, we'll have political clout, i.e. our voice listened to!

Jewish Americans are very effective because they can swing 8:2 bloc votes specific to candidates and issues.  Their population is only 40% of that of Asian Americans, or 2% of the general population. Result: Their voice is heard loud and clear. Why are we still a pile of sand?

However, we induced Clinton to pledge ALL YES to our questionnaire when she is under pressure from Obama. We issued a call for action to defeat Obama which induced Obama to pledge his support to our community. We then campaigned for Obama to defect McCain who never answered seriously.
