WORDS FROM THE HEART OF OUR BEST & BRIGHTEST

Dear Fellow Chinese Americans*,

   I write this with a heavy heart and the future of our fruitful existence in this 

country as a minority population in mind.  Whether it is college admission for our children, welfare benefit for our seniors, and equal treatment before the law, there are no free lunches. One does not get benefits handed to you on a silver platter. You do not automatically get what you deserve but what you are willing to fight for. 

   Many of the welfare/benefit we and our seniors enjoy today are won on the lives and broken head and limbs of the African American some 50 years ago. Those of you watched the Selma march commemoration on TV know. Jewish Americans with only half of the population of Asian Americans has a political action committee, AIPAC, that operates with an annual budget 670 (yes, six hundred seventy) times larger than the Asian America counterpart, the 80-20 Initiative (67 million vs 100K per year). This is what I hope to bend your ears for just a couple of minutes of your time.

    I have been working continuously with 80-20 since day one 16 years ago and have witnessed the many accomplishments she has brought about for our population. These you may know and can find on her website. No need for me to repeat them here. 

    A year ago, 80-20 launched a campaign of raising an endowment of five million dollars in five years, called the SELF fund, for the organization to insure her long term survival. Sad to say, today the total raised is way behind schedule. The Board of Donors of the SELF fund, which is a group of 15 individuals charged with the task of helping the SELF fund raising, and in which I am a member, realize that while you can lead a horse to the water, you cannot force the horse to drink the water. As a group, Chinese Americans are not poor. But if 80-20 cannot raise fund successfully, then either she is not doing a worthy job or our message is not getting through. Thus, the board of donors decided to conduct an experiment. We voted that"each of us shall do our best to raise $2800.00 in the next two weeks (from 3/11-3/25) for the 80-20 SELF fund". Thus, I am asking you to consider donating to 80-20 whatever you can immediately. Write a check or make a pledge payable  to the "80-20 Educational Foundation, SELF fund" now.

   As an added insurance that we don't waste your contribution, if 80-20 fails to reach her fund raising goal, we shall return your donation in full. And sadly 80-20 most likely will go out of existence. There is no use to linger on if the population does not support it even in a minimal way.

   As a supporter, I have done my part according to our leader, S.B. Woo,  that is, donate till it hurts. I sincerely hope you can do whatever you feel appropriate. Many thanks for your time and consideration.

Have you ever heard of a professor who retired with TWO named Chairs? :-)

  

Well, Prof. Ho, a founder of 80-20, holds such an honor from Harvard, no less.  He holds the title of Gordon McKay Professor of Systems Engineering, Emeritus, and the T. Jefferson Coolidge Chair of Applied Mathematics, Emeritus.  Besides numerous awards, he is also a member of the U.S. National Academy of Engineering and a foreign member of the Chinese Academy of Engineering and the Chinese Academy of Sciences.  

Larry cares greatly for our community, unlike some who have "made it."  80-20 likes to use this opportunity to salute another one of our community's best and the brightest.

    So many asked me who was the generous donor who gave $240,000 to SELF.  So I begged the donor to let her name be known.  She finally agreed.  

    She is Alice S. Huang.  She was a professor of microbiology and virology at Harvard and later at California Institute of Technology.  He was a Board member of 80-20 PAC for many years, as well as that of many big corporations and foundations.  She was the President & Chairperson of AAAS,   American Association for the Advancement of Science, which is  world's largest general  scientific society.  Her spouse is Dr. David Baltimore, a Nobel Laureate in Physiology or Medicine.  Alice pilots her own airplane.  :-)

    80-20 likes to use this opportunity to salute one of our community's best and the brightest.   Together, we shall overcome.

Good News Regarding SELF

             Good News on Seeking Justice for Officer Liang of NYPD

(a) 80-20 and Officer Liang' lawyer Steve Worth have connected.

(b) There was a demonstration of an estimated 3,000 participants on 3/8/2015 in NYC to support Officer Liang.  A demonstration is a group display of opinion. It could be used to express support for a cause, or display anger in public or both.

                      80-20 PAC Is Dying

     SELF is way behind its target to reach $1,000,000 per year for 5 years by Oct. 25, 2015.   The current commitment is only $415,900/yr for 5 yrs.  

     The old war-horses at 80-20, all volunteers, are retiring soon.  They hope to train a new generation of leaders, who owing to different times, understandably look for financial security while serving the Asian Am community.  That is why 80-20 must raise $1 million per year for 5 yrs. before the current leaders retire.  If the goal is NOT reached, 80-20 PAC will likely demise.

Cause and Effect !      80-20 was and still is the first & only Asian Am national org. to oppose the "race-preference" college admissions.  See its 5/12/2012 e-newsletter, entitled "Battles Have Begun."          2.5 years later, the following BiGGEST & MOST PRESTIGIOUS periodicals published  articles pointing to the unfairness of "race-preference" college admissions against AsAm students.    (1) Nov. 9, 2014, USA  Today, "Asians Get the Ivy League's Jewish Treatment ", (2) Nov. 9, 2014 , Wall Street Journal, "Harvard's Asian Problem", (3) Nov. 10, 2014,  NY Times, "Is Harvard Unfair to AsAm?", (4) Dec. 26, 2014, Atlantic Magazine, "Do diversity indirectly discriminate against Asian Americans?"        Read the words used in these titles: "Jewish Treatment", "Problem," "Unfair" and "discriminate" .            A Widening Rank -- LA Times Joins                                  "How can this be possible?"        LA Times is headquartered in LA, where 2 million AsAms make their living.  Its article on the unfairness of "race-preference" college admissions against AsAm students is most welcome.    (5) Feb.21, 2015, LA Times, "For Asian Americans, a changing landscape on college admissions"        Here is AN EXCERPT from Frank Shyong's article.  To read the full article click here.       " "Let's talk about Asians," she (an instructor for college applicants)  says.           Lee's next slide shows three columns of numbers from a Princeton University study that tried to measure how race and ethnicity affect admissions by using SAT scores as a benchmark. It uses the term "bonus" to describe how many extra SAT points an applicant's race is worth. She points to the first column.          African Americans received a "bonus" of 230 points, Lee says.She points to the second column.  "Hispanics received a bonus of 185 points."             The last column draws gasps.  Asian Americans, Lee says, are penalized by 50 points - in other words, they had to do that much better to win admission . . . .             "Zenme keyi," one mother hisses in Chinese.  How can this be possible?   . . . . Justice vs. Politics for Officer Liang of NYPD

Indictment Against Peter Liang Politically                       Motivated?    Some made the above charge.  80-20 is not ready to  believe it yet.  However, 80-20 must be ready to act, when  called for.  In the event that politics is interfering against  justice, 80-20 shall play a counter-balancing role.    So we looked into politics in Brooklyn and the track  record of District Attorney (DA) Kenneth Thompson.           The Demographics of Brooklyn              The demographics, shown in the table below, project a  rapidly rising political role for Asian Ams in Brooklyn elections. Racial composition 2010 1990 1950 1900 White  49.5%  46.9%  92.2% 98.3% -Non-Hispanic  35.8%  40.1%  n/a n/a Black or African American  35.8%  37.9%   7.6% 1.6% Hispanic or Latino (of any race)  19.8%  20.1%   n/a n/a Asian  11.3%   4.8% 0.1% 0.1%    From 1990 to 2010, the population of non-Hispanic Whites,  blacks and Hispanics all decreased.  In contrast, that of Asian  increased by 135%, or approximately 5% per year.       By Spring of 2017, when the next Democratic primary for  Brooklyn DA will occur, the Asian population will be about 16%.   A primary in which one constituent has an emotional grudge is  where a PAC like 80-20 can play a pivotal role.       The Track Record of DA Ken Thompson       DA Thompson was elected in 2013 after a very bitter election  against a 6-term former Brooklyn DA Charles Hynes. Thompson  was sworn in as DA on 1/1/2014.  He seems to be doing a  respectable job.  Being a public servant in a city like Brooklyn is  not easy.  80-20 wishes him luck.                                            However, in 1.2 years, DA Thompson has generated much  negative publicity.  See some Newspaper headlines about him  below: DA's detective driver is former drug dealer | New York Post                                    - Oct 29, 2014, and Brooklyn DA treats detectives like personal errand boys                                      - only 4 days ago. One quote in the above article says, ""He's a psychopath," the  source said. "There is no DA I know of in the state who has his  own ­advance team." Shopping for a DA Candidate for the 2017 Election?     No, no, no!  80-20 will focus its effort on fact finding* to  advance justice.   Politics should never interfere with justice.       Let the word go forth that            if 80-20 must use politics to counter-balance politically            motivated scapegoating against Officer Peter Liang of            NYPD, we will!             Forward this e-newsletter!                                                  DONATE to SELF till it hurts. National Political Action Committee, Inc. www.80-20Initiative.net Help us spread the word, like us on Facebook, follow us on Twitter ! * Facts that 80-20 is very interested in verifying:  i) Were Liang and his partner explicitly ordered not to do vertical patrolling in      that building by their boss? ii) Had Liang admitted that his finger was on the trigger?  Or, did he state that      his finger was along the gun barrel but slipped when his right shoulder      hit a door? iii) Is there any physical evidence that the bullet hit the wall and ricocheted?        Has the physical evidence been protected and/or photographed? iv) Did Liang and his partner call the Police Union first and 4 minutes later call 911?  v) Some articles describe the stairwell as being "pitch black."  Is it true?  The       jury could easily be convinced that Officer Liang would feel threatened in       this dangerous public housing project area where the stairwell is pitch black.       Would it then have been reasonable for him to keep the finger on the trigger? vi) What other police shooting or assault cases has the Brooklyn DA prosecuted r      ecently? vII) What role did Liang's partner play in this incident?  Is he under investigation        or being disciplined?          80-20 Mission Statement Frequently Asked Questions 80-20's Top 10 Accomplishment, published 3 years ago.
