Asian Am. Kids are the Most Bullied. WHY?

Asian Am. Kids are the Most Bullied!

The Ugly Facts

According to a study supported by the US Justice Department and Education Department, Asian American students aged 12 to 18 are the most bullied in the US. Click on http://news.yahoo.com/asian-americans-most-bullied-us-schools-study-215608310.html .

o 54% of AsAm teenagers said they were bullied in the classroom,
compared with 31.3 % of whites, 38.4% of African Americans and
34.3% of Hispanics.

o 62% of Asian Americans said they were bullied on cyberspace i.e.
online,
compared with 18.1% of whites -- 3 times more!

Why is that so? We, parents, need to search our hearts and souls.

80-20's Suggestion on How to Stop the Bullying!

1) Asian Am. parents of a given school district should get themselves
organized first.

2) After that, help Asian Am. children of the same school district to
organize themselves. Be sure to recruit at least one teacher and one
administrator to join that student organization. If bullying is very
severe in your area, invite a media reporter to be an occasional observe
of your group meetings.

3) Students should be trained to report every incident of bullying to the
teacher/administrator in their group who will decide what actions to
take. .

4) For cyberspace bullying, train the students this way:

a) Don't react. Don't give the bullies what they want, and

b) Adopt 'the "block and tell" strategy, which involves blocking access,
and then telling the teacher/administrator in the group and let them
decide what to do.

5) If the method works, don't' relax right away. Keep the parent and the
student groups going for a while. Don't forget to thank the teacher/
administrator in an appropriate occasion annually.

To All Asian American Parents: WHY???

Why do our children get bullied so much? Could that be related to our
own timidity in tolerating the glass ceiling against us? Bullying of AsAms
doesn't s 745 top after schooling. Read "The Army Must Fully Explain the Strange Death of Pvt. Danny Chen in Afghanistan*" -- bullying ssuspected. Click:
http://articles.nydailynews.com/2011-10-21/news/30322061_1_strange-death-afghanistan-army .

To Presidents of 80-20 chapters

If bullying problems exist in your area, please consider calling a chapter
meeting to organize the "parent group" to get things moving from step 1)
to step 5). This kind of action will be your most effective recruitment tool.

80-20 Is Again Dying!!!

Will you let an organization like 80-20 die? 80-20 only had 10 new members the past week, while it needed at least 75.

80-20 has helped 2,200,000 Asian Ams break the glass ceiling against them and is on the verge of helping another 700,000. See a numerical account of my statements above:

1. For An Estimated 50,000 AsAm Lawyers:
Their chance to be appointed life-tenured federal judges has doubled. Note that the number of such AsAm judges has doubled in the last 3 yrs. owing to President Obama's written promise to 80-20.

2. For the 70,000 AsAms. Working in Univ./Colleges:
The number of Asian Ams having been appointed to be the presidents and provosts of large and prestigious universities in the last 3 years has exceeded those appointed throughout the history of America.

3. For the 2,000,000 AsAms Who Work in Private Industries:
The glass ceiling against them is beginning to break. For the first time in history, the US Labor Department has promised in writing to 80-20 that it'll enforce an existing law for AsAms. to enjoy equal opportunity to rise to the top. Click on
http://www.80-20initiative.net/news/preselect2008_dol_reply1.asp

On Oct. 31, 80-20's S.B. Woo and Ved Chaudhary will be meeting with Patricia Shiu, Director of OFCCP, Dept of Labor to review progress in this area. Also, Pres. Obama has promised 80-20 a meeting to view progress.

4. For the 90,000 AsAm Federal Gov. Employees -- An Exciting New Program:
80-20 has NO direct bearing on starting the program described below. However, 80-20 has decried the extremely low glass ceiling against AsAm federal gov. workers for years, including placing of a full-page public service ad in the Washington Post.
http://www.80-20initiative.net/action/equalopp_washingtonpost_wpad.asp

The White House Initiative on Asian Ams & Pacific Islanders announced on Oct. 21 a "new Senior Executive Service (SES) Development Program."
http://www.whitehouse.gov/blog/2011/10/21/launching-senior-executive-service-development-program .

This program should greatly increase the chance for AsAms to rise to the SES rank - the highest merit rank - in the federal government.

Currently the chance for AsAms to reach that rank is only 1/3 that of the national average.

5. For the 700,000 AsAm State/Local Gov. workers
A federal program like the above shall induce SIMILAR programs in state/county/city/local governments, especially in states with high % of Asian Ams such as CA, NY, NJ and NA.

Please spread the news in item 5 to your friends who
work for state or local governments in those states.

80-20 shall be delighted to assist if an AsAm org. needs a supporting letter from 80-20 to go to its governor.

Do you think the breaking of glass ceilings would have been done without 80-20? As individuals, AsAms are powerless to remove the glass ceilings against them. Only a politically effective organization like 80-20 can push the envelop.

80-20 SHALL die, if it fails to double its membership this year. Save 80-20 please. To join, using a credit card, go to http://www.80-20initiative.net .

Will House Resolution 282 Pass?

The PASSAGE of the Senate Resolution 201 gave proof to 80-20's UNIQUE strengths in

o political knowledge,
o political connections & clout, and
o its unceasing effort to get Asian Ams politically involved

Let's review 80-20's "Call To Action," sent to you on June 6, 2011 which was 4 months prior to the passage of SR 201. The points showing 80-20's unique strengths are stated in bracket and shown in blue. Such statements are inserted into the original email, which is reprinted below.

- - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - -

Subject: Call To Action (sent to you on June 6, 2011)

CALL TO ACTION -- estimated chance of success is 99.9%, if you get involved!
[Note that 80-20 predicted a 99.9% chance of success, 4 months earlier.]

On May 26 Repts. Judy Chu (D-CA) and Judy Biggert (R-IL) introduced a bipartisan resolution (not a bill) expressing regret for six decades of legislation targeting the Chinese people for physical and political exclusion, including the infamous Chinese Exclusion Act. It is known as House Resolution 282. A parallel bipartisan Senate Resolution 201 was also introduced by Sens. Diane Feinstein (D-CA) and Scott Brown (R-MA).

On May 28, Cong. Chu asked 80-20 to help secured co-sponsors of both resolutions. This Call To Action" is to ask YOU to help secure co-sponsorship from your own Congressperson.

[A demonstration of 80-20's political clout - getting co-sponsors]

80-20 never asks our supporters to do anything which it doesn't do itself. So, we first spent the last 6 days securing co-sponsors ourselves. Result? A complete success! The ENTIRE congressional delegation of Delaware, the First State, became co-sponsors. Senator Tom Carper & Chris Coons are co-sponsoring S. Res. 201. Delaware's one and only Congressman, John Carney, co-sponsors H. Res. 282. When S.B. wrote to thank each, Senator Tom Carper mailed back and said, "S.B. you are welcome, but it is we who should thank you. All the best. Tom"

[Unceasing effort to get YOU politically involved]

Will you please work with 80-20 to become a successful lobbyist of your
own Congressperson? It'll be educational and fun. :-)

Will House Resolution 282 also pass?

YES. If Congresswoman Judy Chu encounters resistance to her House Resolution 282, and if she requests 80-20's help, 80-20 shall provide it.

Join 80-20 now! 80-20 has resolved that it'll either double its membership to prove to itself that 80-20 is capable of tackling the fundamental weakness of our community - POLITICAL APATHY, or it'll dissolve itself.

Why short change your future for ONLY $50?!

Dear fellow Asian Americans,

If you've friends who think $50/year is too much to invest in their children's education or family's future, would you think they're nuts?

Well, many of us have not gazed into the mirror of truth for a while to ponder this point.

I hope you have not unwittingly fallen into that group.

"RIDICULOUS!" You may indignantly reply. "I work like a dog for my family and slave at my career to try to get ahead! I'd NEVER skimp $50 at the expense of their or my future!!!"

I believe you.

And I know that if you are the typical Asian American, you are a model citizen when it comes to core values.

But my friends, according to DOL (Dept. of Labor) statistics, an AsAm. has LESS THAN HALF the chance of an average American in the same work position to be promoted to managerial ranks. That is true whether YOU work in private industries, universities or the federal government.
See http://www.80-20educationalfoundation.org/projects/equalopp_washingtonpost_wpad.asp

"A Chinaman's chance" still applies to our ethnic community where many of our best and brightest are held back by the lowest glass ceiling!

AsAms are legendary as the most-educated, hardest-working minority. At work, we are the first in and last out. Yet we are the first to get blamed and scapegoated when things go wrong: EEOC data show that AsAm are the most aggrieved and yet least likely to file a complaint. We may also be the most likely to get laid off when economic times are tough because we are known to be least likely to fight back over unfair treatment.

According to info released during a conference call on October 6, 2011 at the White House [set up for Asian Americans by the U.S. Department of Labor and the White House Initiative on Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders (WHIAAPI)], at least 235,000 of unemployed AAPIs had been out of work for more than six months. "Asian Americans have experienced the HIGHEST rate of long-term unemployment"!

It's time for AsAms to stop muttering their complaints under their breaths and turn their frustration into CONCERTED AND DETERMINED action.

WHAT IS THE USE of sending your kids to Ivy League schools, if inequality in the workplace prevents them from becoming all that they are capable of being??

WHAT GOOD IS IT, even if you have financial security but insufficient political power to keep it? To ensure equality and justice??

Remember the Chinese Exclusionary Act? Remember the Japanese internment? Remember Vincent Chin?

If you want to harvest the fruits of your labor, you must plant the seedlings today.

If you want financial security and equality, you must invest in POLITICAL POWER now!

STOP selling yourself short! Protect the future for yourself and your children for only $35-50/yr.

If WE don't care enough about AsAm equality and justice to put them front and center of our priorities, then WHO will??

80-20 is the singular AsAm organization that has steadfastly fought the toughest battles for you and your children. It is led by a small group of dedicated volunteers who are not paid one penny of salar 501 y! Yet out of 15.5 million AsAms, only 2,500 pay their dues to support our work! Our political apathy threatens to choke the life out of this tough-fighting valiant organization.

If you are one of our special dues-paying members, thank you from the bottom of our hearts. Your steadfast support and shining example sustains 80-20 in its daunting and lonely task. If you're not, please don't starve your workhorse any longer. Do your part. Please.

If you want 80-20 to be around to help you, your children and grandchildren, help 80-20 DOUBLE its membership.

Wall Street Journal: Asians occupying few Corner Offices

The Wall Street Journal reported on July 25, 2011 that despite an outsized share of Ivy League degrees, Asian-Americans are underrepresented in executive suites. According to a report from the Center for Work-Life Policy, a non-profit think tank, roughly 5% of U.S. residents identify themselves as Asian American, but they hold less than 2% of executive roles at Fortune 500 companies.

Only eight Asian professionals currently lead Fortune 500 companies, including

Vikram Pandit at Citigroup and Andrea Jung at Avon. Yet Asians often hit the work force with highly coveted degrees. Asians and Asian Americans comprise 16% of undergraduates in the Ivy League, according to the National Center for Education Statistics, and 35% of undergraduates at the top three: UC Berkeley, MIT, and Stanford.

Thus, WSJ confirms 80-20's report that despite the highest educational attainment, Asian Americans have the lowest chance to rise to higher levels of management. See: www.80-20educationalfoundation.org/projects/equalopp_washingtonpost_wpad.asp

The CWLP report surveyed 2,952 respondents of all ethnicities, including Asian- Americans (half born in the U.S.). One-quarter of Asian respondents said they face work-place discrimination.

Do you wish your children and grand-children to succeed to the fullest extent of their capabilities?

If you do, then you must support 80-20 Initiative, because it is the ONLY organization that has the voice, the contacts, and the clout at the highest levels of the Government; and the political courage and savvy to advocate for the interests of Asian Americans. A good question from a strong supporter

A Good Question

"What has the President got to do with university appointments?"

Prof. Achamma Chandersekaran of Columbia U, a long time supporter of 80-20, asked, after reading "NEWS! When 80-20 dies, who will fight for you?"

Many of you probably wanted to ask the same question. So that is a teachable moment. Let's first review the relevant contents of that e-newsletter.

What was stated that caused the question

I stated in that e-newsletter that Pres. Obama has fulfilled at least 2 of 3 promises:

(1) Regarding Pres. Obama promise to appoint more Asian Am judges:
Pres. Obama has, in 3 years, DOUBLED the number of Asian Am judges, with 2
in the higher Appeals Court level. A superb example of fulfilling a promise. See a table at the end of this e-newsletter.

(2) Regarding the promise to break the glass ceiling against Asian Ams in universities:
See the impressive list of Asian Am. Presidents and provosts, appointed in the last 3 years.

The President of these universities, in alphabetical order:
Dartmouth College, NH, an Ivy League school;

Seton Hall University, NJ;
State Univ. of NY, Buffalo;
Univ. of Illinois, main campus (The exact title is Chancellor);
Univ. of Maryland, main campus (Prior to that, the only AsAm to reach
such a position was Chancellor Chang-Lin Tien, UC, Berkeley, who
had deceiced and was one of the founders of 80-20).

The provost of these universities, in alphabetical order:
Miami University, Ohio (an 80-20 member);
Univ. of Arizona, main campus (The exact title is Interim Provost);
Univ. of Calif, San Diego (Executive Vice President & Provost, an
80-20 member) ; and
Univ. of Cincinnati, OH

The above list shows that MORE Asian Am. presidents/provosts were appointed to BIG universities in the last 3 years than what had EVER been realized in the ENTIRE history of
America.

80-20's Answer

Pres. Obama has no direct connection at all to the appointment of these administrators. However, there is an IMPORTANT indirect connection. That is where the enforcement of Executive Order 11246 for Asian Ams, promised in writing to 80-20 by the OFCCP, DOL under the Obama Administration, comes in.

OFCCP stands for the Office of Federal Contract Compliance Programs, Department of Labor. It is empowered by EO 11246 to make sure that federal contractors and subcontractors, which include almost all universities & big private companies, do not discriminate against any American. The contracts can be cancelled, if any American institution receiving more than $10,000 of federal money, persists in discriminating against Americans.

The glass ceiling against Asian Ams is statistically irrefutable. See the Chart below.

So the written promise from DOL has created the pressure to break the glass ceiling against Asian Ams, at least in universities. In comparison, Elaine Chao, Labor Secretary under Pres. Bush, refused to enforce EO 11246 for Asian Americans.

Since 1965, EO 11246 was a main force to help blacks, women and Hispanics break the glass ceiling against them in universities and private industries.

Similar Improvement in Private Industries?

80-20 is NOT aware of similar improvement in private industries. That is why Ved Chaudhary and S. B. Woo have made an appointment to see Director of OFCCP, Patricia Shiu, on Oct. 31. Indeed Pres. Obama has promised 80-20 a meeting in the White House to review the progress of Asian Ams in reaching equal opportunity with the enforcement of EO 11246.

Marvelous Progress in the Number. of AsAm Life-Tenured Federal Judges

*

Friday, September 30, 2011

NEWS! When 80-20 dies, who will fight for you?

Pres. Obama's Promises to us Through 80-20:

See his SIGNED PROMISE, click on
http://www.80-20initiative.net/news/preselect2008_obama.asp .

The promises are:

(1) make it his "top priority" to drastically INCREASE the number of Asian Am. life-tenured federal judges in both the District and the Appeals Courts levels;

(2) break the glass ceiling against Asian Ams in universities; and

(3) break the glass ceiling against Asian Ams in private industries.

Pres. Obama has honored at least 2 of 3 promises. Here are the facts.

UNDER (1) ABOVE, Pres. Obama has just appointed TWO MORE.

o Jacqueline H. Nguyen, a Vietnamese American, to serve on the 9th Appeals Court, and

o Miranda Mai Du, another Vietnamese American, to serve as a District Judge for the District. of Nevada

In 3 years, he has DOUBLED the number of Asian Am judges, with 2 in Appeals Court level.

UNDER (2) ABOVE, there has been MORE Asian Am. presidents/provosts appointed to BIG universities than what had been in the ENTIRE history of America. 80-20 just learnt of yet another recent appointment:

o Amado Gabriel Esteban, Filipino American, appointed to be the President of Seton Hall University in 2011, the first president of that university who is not a Cathlolic preiest.

One Uncertain Area!

Under (3), 80-20 is not sure if there has been much progress. Therefore, S. B. Woo & Ved Chaudhary just made an appointment to see the director of OFCCP, Department of Labor, Patricia Shiu. They'll meet on Oct. 31 in Washington D.C.

80-20 shall also meet with Pres. Obama early next year to review the progress
in the private industries area.

A True Story told by S. B. Woo

The following conversation occurred between Sen. John Kerry of MA and S. B. Woo in 1988.

Kerry: S.B., do you know why both political parties and the national media don't pay much attention to the Asian Am. community?

S. B.: Why?

Kerry: Because all 3 entities know that even your activists, when told to go away or ignored long enough, will quietly go away. No sustained action.

80-20 is a role model in taking sustained action to make the "impossible" possible. 80-20 aims to EMPOWER our community with ample self-confidence and a new spirit.

80-20 also vows if it can't serve our community effectively anymore, it'll rather die than pretending to be activists but who will quietly submit when the going gets tough.

Here are items that 80-20 has made POSSIBLE, conceived by many as impossible earlier?

o Go by a "reward and punish" principle in dealing with the political establishment
o Deliver Asian Am. bloc votes
o Fight with presidential candidates and yet get their commitments.

Perhaps the biggest "impossible" 80-20 aims to OVERCOME is our POLITICAL APATHY.

80-20 aims to HALVE the amount of our political apathy by DOUBLING its membership within a year, or it'll dissolve itself!

How is DOUBLING going? It needs your sustained help, especially help from our Basic Members who are urged to upgrade to Family memberships. See below. The red line is getting ever closer to the green line.

Men beat AsAm to death; sentenced to probation and fined $3,780

Written by Ed Lin, an 80-20 Board Member

Dear fellow Asian Americans,

Of what importance are judicial appointments and how can it affect the 99.999% of us who are law abiding citizens? Why should we even care? Does the above ACTUAL verdict concern you?

Remember the 1942 internment of Japanese Americans during WWII? Approximately 110,000 of them lost their property, were incarcerated with total disruption to their careers, businesses and private lives, and put under a devastating cloud of suspicion about their patriotism.

Fortunately, German Americans and Italian Americans escaped a similar miscarriage of justice, and were accorded our constitutional protection of due process and presumption of innocence (notwithstanding the fact Germany and Italy were allied enemies of the US on the European battlefront).

Nor should we forget that in 1982, a Detroit Chinese American, Vincent Chin, was beaten to death by two Caucasians, former Chrysler plant superintendent Ronald Ebens and his stepson Michael Nitz. They mistook Chin to be Japanese and took out their unemployment anger on Chin. Judge Charles Kauffman, on sentencing the two guilty men, said “These are not the kind of people you put behind bars” and sentenced the two men to three years’ probation and $3,780 in fines and court costs. Although the miscarriage of justice sparked an outcry amongst the Asian American community, there was insufficient political muscle for justice to be served, and to achieve a different outcome.

Insufficient political muscle for justice to be served . . .

Does this seem like déjà vu? How many times does history have to repeat itself before we finally learn our lesson? And realize that AsAm unity and political strength is crucial to our social wellbeing and equality?

AsAm are the most educated ethnic group in the US and comprise 5% of US population. Although we have a disproportionately high (5.5%) representation in the legal profession with many exceptionally qualified legal scholars, we have a dismal representation in the Federal judiciary:

In the nearly two decades between 1988 and 2005, the number of AsAm federal judges increased from 5 to 6. In 2006, 80-20 began a push for more AsAm federal judges. In 2008, we secured a written promise from then presidential candidate Obama to increase the number of AsAm federal judges. He has substantially fulfilled that promise to AsAm. As of today, we have 15 AsAm federal judges, with one at the Appellate level. If all AsAm judicial scholars had an equal opportunity to become federal judges, we ought to have around 40 instead of 15 AsAm federal judges.

To give you an inkling of the amount of behind-the-scenes work necessary to bring a judicial nominee to a vote in the Senate, consider this: In 2010 and 2011, 80-20 worked with CA Senators and the White House to nominate a supremely qualified jurist, Professor Goodwin Liu of UC Berkeley, to serve as a life-tenured judge on the US Court of Appeals. Although successfully nominated and confirmed by the Senate Judiciary Committee, his final confirmation by the US Senate was met with partisan opposition by Republicans who would not permit a vote to take place. 80-20 called for a fax campaign to Republican Senators to support Liu, but to no avail. President Obama re-nominated Liu in 2011 and again the confirmation could not come to a vote due to a Republican block. Professor Liu then withdrew his nomination and he has just been confirmed to the CA Supreme Court. See below.

Our government is supposed to be of the people, by the people. Power corrupts and partisan politics lead some to put political gains ahead of national interests and equality for all.

Remember Selma? Remember Birmingham? The only thing protecting us against tyranny and injustice, is our judiciary system. In the end, the responsibility for fighting for AsAm equality and justice falls squarely on your shoulders and mine.

If WE don’t care enough about AsAm equality and justice to put them front and center of our priorities, then WHO will??

80-20 is the singular AsAm organization that has steadfastly fought the toughest battles for you and your children. Yet out of 15.5 million AsAm, only 2,650 pay their dues to support our work! Our political apathy threatens to choke the life out of this scrappy, tough-fighting valiant organization.

If you are one of our special dues-paying members, Thank You, Thank You, Thank You. Your steadfast support and shining example sustains 80-20 in its daunting and lonely task. If you’re not, please don’t starve your workhorse any longer. If you want 80-20 to be around to help you or your children, help 80-20 DOUBLE its membership. Real Stories Regarding Keeping 80-20 Alive

o A $10,000 check form Alex New of NY arrived.
I e-mailed him: "Alex, bad news. Your matching fund of $10K is all used up. Pay up pls. :)" Alex replied, "To me, that's the good news. A check sent." Generosity!

o An email moved me to tears.
A good friend who is an Honorary Family Member proudly fulfilled his promise to recruit a member for 80-20. His email states, "xxx and yyy, our dear children, agreed to join 80/20 as members to fulfill my birthday wish last week. . . . Indeed, the torch shall be passed to the next generation." Getting ones' own children to support 80-20 is sometimes the hardest and the most ticklish task!

o An American living in France (Neuilly Sur Seine, zip: 92200) responded. She upgraded from Basic to Family membership. What great support!

o Putting money where the mouth is.
A friend Yin-Long Qiu of Detroit wrote me. He suggested for 80-20 to translate its e-newsletters into various Asian languages including Chinese to expand 80-20's membership base. I replied saying that such is beyond 80-20's ability, considering cost-effectiveness. You know what! I just receive an email from him stating:

"I am talking to my daughter, who is a college sophomore, just joined 80-
20, and is learning Chinese, about translating main points of 80-20
website as her extra-curriculum project. I will be working with her to
check everything in the end. . . . I am also contacting UM As-Am student
organizations, and will try to find students to do similar translations in
Hindi, Japanese, Korean, and other languages. Please be patient, and it
may take a while. Perhaps the Christmas/New Year break will be needed
for them to get the project done." That "can-do" spirit moved me to no end!

o Few things are truly impossible.
Many Asian Ams used to think it impossible for 80-20 to
o go by a "reward and punish" principle in dealing with politicians;
o fight with presidential candidates and yet get their commitments;
o deliver an Asian American bloc vote.

80-20 has proven that such "impossible missions" are possible.

Now is HALVING our community's POLITICAL APATHY or DOUBLING 80-20's
membership impossible? See the graph below. If 130 join 80-20 this week,
the red line will have caught up with the green line . Will you be one?

Any US citizen AND permanent resident may join 80-20. Using a credit card, go to http://www.80-20initiative.net Or send your check to
80-20 PAC 13337 South St. #189 Cerritos, CA 90703. Student $15; Basic $35; Family $50 or Life Member $1,000.

S. B. Woo Commits $30,000 to achieve DOUBLING

650 Basic (1 vote) members got a personal commitment from S. B. Woo that if they'll add $15 to upgrade to Family memberships (2 votes), and if 80-20 still fails to DOUBLE, he'll send each of them $50. That amounts to a personal commitment of $30,000 or more!

As usual, S. B. is always willing to put his own neck on the line for the public good. While he prods all of us to sacrifice for the benefit of the whole, he has ALWAYS led by SACRIFICING more himself.

Below is what he sent to those Basic members. About 200 Basic members have already upgraded, responding to S.B's earlier pleads.

80-20 wants to publicize this commitment so that Asian Ams will know that S. B's commitment is real. 80-20 will hold him to it! We also join S.B. in pleading to the 650 Basic members to upgrade to Family memberships in order to keep 80-20 alive!

Respectfully,

Ved Chaudhary, Secretary and
Kathleen To, Treasurer and Past President, 80-20 PAC, Inc.

Dear xxx:

This is my 3rd plead for you to do our children & me a BIG favor. It's not because I want to plead. It's because I don't know where else to turn to keep 80-20 - the one and only effective lobby group for Asian Ams - alive!

If 95% of the remaining 650 Basic members, like you, will upgrade with $15 (200 have already done so), 80-20 will only be 400 members short of its DOUBLING goal to combat POLITICAL APATHY. I give you my word of honor that I'll get those remaining 400 members. If I fail in that pledge, I'll send each of you, who will have upgraded owing to my 3rd plead, $50 -- a total commitment of $30,000. 80-20 needs members, not $$$.

If you don't help, 80-20 shall die! That's again my words of honor. See the graph below. The red line has fallen again.

Would you give $15 to upgrade your Basic membership (1 vote) to Family membership (2 votes)? The process is easy. See the footnote. The second member can be your spouse, child, sibling, or any one of your friends.

Respectfully yours,

S. B. Woo, who has volunteered for 12 years for 80-20 and donated $100K.

FOOTNOTE: To UPGRADE with $15:

Click on http://www.80-20initiative.net/membership/payment.asp . Go the line marked DONATION.
Enter 15.00 & submit. At the next page, enter BOTH the second name & his/her e-mail address, if any, at the COMPANY line, & your OWN name & email address at respective proper lines.
80-20'll take care of the rest.

To send a check of $15, please write the name & e-address of the second person at the back of
your check. Send it to 80-20 PAC 13337 South St. #189 Cerritos, CA 90703. Your $15 will be matched.

An additional inducement for you to upgrade to family membership:
o 1-year membership will be EXTENDED to one year from the date you've added the $15. So it' a good deal. :)
o Multiyear membership will continue after 1 year, although not that of the 2nd person.

On Labor Day: Is your labor being equitably recognized?

Dear fellow Asian Americans,

The government announcement below is a compelling example of 80-20’s landmark accomplishments on your behalf: 80-20 is securing equal opportunity and invaluable protection for 15.5 million Asian Americans. For the first time in American history, we are
FINALLY receiving protection under EO 11246. This equal opportunity law was enacted by
President Johnson in 1965. You have seen its dramatic results over the past 46 years as it
helped millions of Blacks, Hispanics and women attain greater equality in the workplace.

Sadly and incredibly, this Equal Opportunity Law has never been enforced for Asian Americans
until 80-20 took up the cause and got Democratic Presidential candidates, including Obama, to
promise in writing in 2008 to do so once the candidate became president. See
http://www.80-20initiative.net/news/preselect2008_obama.jpg All of the Republican
candidates refused to respond.

Until recently, despite higher education well above the national norm, Asian Americans have
only 30-45% chance of rising to upper management in federal government, universities and
private enterprises. See:
http://80-20initiative.blogspot.com/2011/05/best-of-80-20s-10-accomplishments.html

The OFCPP (U.S. Department of Labor’s Office of Federal Contract Compliance Programs) under
Patricia Shiu is charged with the enforcement of EO11246. OFCCP can come down on any
government contract recipient (that includes all universities and large corporations) with the
threat to cancel the contract and bar the entity from future gov’t contracts. So they pay
attention to OFCCP and take its actions seriously. Instead of each aggrieved Asian American
having to sue his/her employer for discrimination—against great odds and at huge costs—the
weight of the Federal Government is brought to bear and the employer has the burden of
proof that it did not discriminate. In contrast, former Labor Secretary Elaine Chow (under
President Bush) refused to enforce EO11246. Asian Americans seek NO preferential treatment.
We only ask for the same equal opportunity that all Americans deserve, and which the DOL’s
own statistics showed have been clearly denied to our ethnic group.

In the entire US, only about 2,500 people pay their modest annual memberships dues to
support the important and difficult work of 80-20, performed by a team of dedicated all-
volunteer Asian American leaders. Our progress is severely hobbled by the disease of
pervasive political apathy amongst Asian Americans— 99.99% of us are quite content to let
someone else shoulder the burden for them. Which group are you in?

If you are one of our 2,500 special dues-paying members, Thank You, Thank You, Thank You.
For your sustaining support and shining example. If not, please don’t starve your workhorse
any longer. If you want 80-20 to be around to help you or your children, help 80-20
DOUBLE its membership.

Using a 1000 credit card, go to http://www.80-20initiative.net/ Or send your check to 80-20 PAC
13337 South St. #189 Cerritos, CA 90703
. There is a donor matching fund of
$10,000 for dues of anyone joining. Basic $35; Family $50 or Life Member $1,000.

Thank you.

US Labor Department files complaint against Colorado-based
cheese producer for discriminating against minority job
applicants at California facility
Back wages and job offers sought for African-American, Asian and Hispanic applicants;
debarment from future government contracts recommended

LEMOORE, Calif
. – The U.S. Department of Labor’s Office of Federal Contract Compliance
Programs today filed a complaint with the department’s Office of Administrative Law Judges
against federal contractor Leprino Foods Co. for discriminating against qualified African-American, Asian and Hispanic applicants for on-call laborer positions at the company’s Lemoore West facility.

The administrative complaint seeks back wages and interest for at least 270 class members, as
well as job offers for at least 17 of the original applicants. OFCCP also is requesting that
Leprino Foods’ existing federal contracts be canceled and the company be debarred from
entering into any future contracts until the violations are resolved and the company corrects
its discriminatory employment practices.

“Leprino Foods’ hiring process simply doesn’t pass the sniff test,” said OFCCP Director Patricia
A. Shiu. “When workers are denied employment because of factors that have nothing to do
with their ability to perform the job, something is not right. Our message to the company is
clear: Correct your discriminatory practices and make restitution to the victims or lose your
lucrative federal contracts.”

Under Executive Order 11246, federal contractors cannot discriminate in employment practices
with regard to race and national origin. Data collected from Leprino Foods showed that the
company’s use of a job skills assessment called the WorkKeys exam adversely impacted
minority applicants. During OFCCP’s review, which examined hiring practices for a 22-month
period, the agency found that only 49 percent of otherwise qualified minority applicants
passed the exam, compared with more than 72 percent of non-minority applicants. OFCCP
could not substantiate the employer’s claim that the exam measured applied math, workplace
observation and information location skills related to the essential functions of on-call
laborers. On-call laborers perform a variety of entry-level tasks, including inspecting products,
monitoring equipment and maintaining sanitation at the facility.

Denver-based Leprino Foods is the nation’s largest producer of mozzarella cheese. The
company has contracts totaling $5 million with the U.S. Department of Agriculture to provide
mozzarella and whey produc 3b9 ts to the Farm Services Agency.

In addition to Executive Order 11246, OFCCP’s legal authority exists under Section 503 of the
Rehabilitation Act of 1973 and the Vietnam Era Veterans’ Readjustment Assistance Act of
1974. As amended, these three laws hold those who do business with the federal government,
both contractors and subcontractors, to the fair and reasonable standard that they not
discriminate in employment on the basis of sex, race, color, religion, national origin, disability
or status as a protected veteran. For general information, call OFCCP’s toll-free helpline at 800-
397-6251. Additional information is available at http://www.dol.gov/ofccp

Why pay $35,000/yr for college but not $35/yr for 80-20

Grateful Acknowledgement

Three great couples in the Bay areas in CA, Bob & Grace Chen, Cheng & Cathy Liao, and
Chenming & Margaret Hu have organized a "Chen&Liao&Hu 100 New-Member Fund"
to help 80-20 recruit 100 new members this year. "One for all, and all for one!" 80-20
will love to have such HELP!!!

[A] A Cost-effective Suggestion

Why pay $15,000 to $45,000 per year for college but not $35 per year to 80-20?

A college diploma gets your children entry-level jobs and promotions. 80-20 ensures that your children'll achieve the maximum of
their potentials!

Why pay $350 per hour for lawyers but not pay $35 to 80-20? As an individual, you can't break the glass ceiling, seen below.

[B] 80-20 Is Proven Effective in Breaking the Glass Ceiling for all of us

(A) When 80-20 called for more Asian Am federal judges 5 years ago, there were only 6, all at the lowest district court level. Today,
there are 13 judges at the district level, & 1 at the Appeals court level. Effective!

(B) President Obama promised in writing to 80-20 to help us achieve equal opportunity to rise to the top in workplaces. See the huge
change in higher education since then:

o Jim Yong Kim, a Korean Am, President, Dartmouth College, PA, appointed in 2009, the first Asian Am. Ivy School president;
o Wallace D. Loh, a Chinese Am, President, Univ. of Maryland, main campus, appointed in 2010, the 2nd Asian Am president of a large state university;
o Conrado Gempesaw, a Filipino Am, Provost, Miami University, Ohio, appointed in 2010;
o Phyll 8a0 is Wise, a Chinese Am, Chancellor, Univ. of Illinois, main campus, appointed in 2011, 3rd Asian Am president of a large state univ;
o Jacqueline Mok, a Chinese Am, Interim Provost, U. of Arizona, main campus, appointed in 2011;
o Suresh Subramani, An Indian Am, Executive Vice Chancellor, Univ. of Calif, San Diego, appointed in 2011; and
o Satish K. Tripathi, an Indian Am, President, State Univ. of NY, Buffalo, appointed in 2011,

Those 7 appointments in the last 3 years are more than what Asian Am academics have ever achieved in the history of America!

"Give a man a fish and he eats it for a day. Teach a man how to fish and he won't starve for his entire life."
80-20 aims to DOUBLE the number of Asian Am political activists so that our Group Political Clout will last. Please help.

If 80-20 fails. 80-20 shall DISSOLVE itself and let another organization try curing this root-cause of our weakness -- POLITICAL APATHY.

If you want 80-20 to live, help 80-20 DOUBLE its membership. Using a credit card, go to

Please forward this email to those families who are spending $15K to $45K/yr for colleges &
are not paying the $35/yr to 80-20.

Moving Stories; Root Cause of Our Weakness

Root Cause of Our Political Weakness

The root cause is our POLITICAL APATHY. To combat this disease, 80-20
puts its own life on the line
-- double its membership to prove its
effectiveness in tackling this root cause or die. For a long time, it seemed
a certain death for 80-20.

However, 80-20 doesn't give up easily. S B Woo emailed all Basic
members (1 vote) asking for a big favor. He asked them to each pay an
additional $15 and convince his/her spouse or a friend to become
the 2nd person in a Family membership (2 votes).

The Response was Fantastic

(A) Set a Record in "Members Joining per Week"!

Last week we got 115 more members, breaking the highest ever record of 107.
Look at the graph below. The red line shot way up closing its gap with the green line.

(B) Asked for $15 & 1 member, GUESS WHAT CAME BACK IN?

1) "S.B., I will give $1000 to become a life member soon."
Manlan Liu, Auburn Hill, MI

2) ". . . . I have signed up the following people as members of 80-20 from
my own meager funds. I have great faith in your ability, with my
prodding, to retain them as paying members for future years.

1. Abrar Khan, Denver, CO 2. Shahida Khan, Seattle, WA
3. Omar Khan, Seattle, WA 4. Ilyas Mason Khan, Oakland, CA
5. Aslam Khan, Seattle, WA"
Sincerely,
Alam Khan, Oakland, CA
(Note added by S.B.: All 5 persons paid their $35 on the same day.)

3) "Yes, I would love to donate $500.00." Tina Liu Jen, NJ

4) "What do I do if I want to buy an 80-20 Initiative membership for some
of my Asian-American friends?"
John Kim, Dana Point, CA

5) Henry Lao, El Monte, CA donated $500 instead of $15. When I wrote to
thank him for his extra-ordinary generosity, he replied, "What I'm giving is
nothing compare to you, along with your dedication
. . . . "

6) Of the 100 plus who responded to 80-20's $15 request, 8 generously
each paid $135 to become Family members for 3 years
as an expression
of their confidence that 80-20 will live.

What love and affection for 80-20 from a broad cross section of the
Asian Am. community! Note that the above came from one Korean Am,
one South Asian and 3 Chinese Americans.

"When the going gets tough, the tough get going."
80-20 salutes you!

To those Basic Members who have NOT responded
to S. B, please consider helping. Thank you.

Good news to AsAm workers In univ. Forward pls.

This e-newsletter documents 80-20's successful effort to break the
GLASS CEILING above us in universities.

[A] Documenting 80-20's Contribution
In Breaking the Glass Ceiling in Higher Ed

o 80-20 gathered the data to construct and repeatedly publicized the
following chart, e.g. a full page Washington Post public Service ad.
The chart shows a very low GLASS CEILING over Asian Ams:

o Using this chart, 80-20 induced President Obama to promise
in the 2008 presidential election to help us break the GLASS CEILING.
Click on http://www.80-20initiative.net/news/preselect2008_obama.asp
to see Pres. Obama's written & signed promise to 80-20 Educational
Foundation in this regard.

o After Pres. Obama was elected, 80-20 turned Pres. Obama's promise
into the enforcement
of a current law by the Labor Department on behalf
of Asian Ams. See a written promise by the Labor Department to enforce
Exec. Order 11246 in order to break the GALSS CEILING over us in work
places. Click on http://www.80-20initiative.net/news/preselect2008_obama.asp

[B] Proof that the Glass Ceiling in Higher Ed is Breaking

See the names of the 6 Asian Ams Presidents/provosts appointed to BIG
universities since Pres. Obama was elected.

o Jim Yong Kim, a Korean Am, President, Dartmouth College, PA,
appointed in 2009, the first Asian Am. Ivy School president;

o Wallace D. Loh, a Chinese Am, President, Univ. of Maryland, main
campus, appointed in 2010, the 2nd Asian Am president of a large
state university.
(Chang-lin Tien, Chancellor, UC, Berkeley, was the
first. Tien was also one of the 6 founders of 80-20);

o Conrado Gempesaw, a Filipino Am, Provost, Miami University, Ohio,
appointed in 2010, an 80-20 member

o Phyllis Wise, a Chinese Am, Chancellor, Univ. of Illinois, main campus,
appointed in 2011, 3rd Asian Am president of a large state university;

o Jacqueline Mok, a Chinese Am, Interim Provost, U. of Arizona, main campus,
appointed in 2011,

o Satish K. Tripathi, an Indian Am, President, State Univ. of NY, Buffalo,
appointed in 2011, and

The above 6 appointments in the last 3 years are more than all
the top administrators jobs in big universities that America has ever
accorded Asian Am academics in the the history of America!

[C] You Decide If You Want to Keep 80-20 Alive

o Do these appointments indirectly benefit you & your children, including
the issue of college admissions? You decide.

o Are these appointments related to 80-20's tireless fight against the
GLASS CEILING & its effectiveness? You decide.

Who'll Break the Glass Ceiling For You, If 80-20 Is Dissolved?

The Tough Get Going!

Exciting Announcements

80-20 missed two other major breakthroughs in higher ed
in its e-newsletter yesterday. We apologize to you and the
2 high-achieving academicians, who are:

Wallace D. Loh, a Chinese American. He has been president
of the Univ. of Maryland, main campus, since Nov. 2010, &
Jacqueline Mok, a Chinese Am. She has just been named
Interim Provost & Senior V.P., Univ. of Arizona, main campus.

FIVE new top administrators in big universities in 2 years.
Think that is an accident? Or is the above proof positive
that "Speak up & we shall be heard!"

NEW AsAm Top Administrators in Higher Ed

Are Asian Ams Breaking the Glass Ceiling in Higher Ed?

NEW Asian Am Top-Level Administrators In Universities

The following are isolated happenings. They are not as reliable as statistical
evidence. See an important footnote at the bottom. Nevertheless, these
appointments seem GOOD NEWS.

(1) Dr. Phyllis Wise, a Chinese American, has just been named Chancellor,
U. of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign. She'll become one of only
a handful of Asian American chancellors/presidents ever, nationwide,
at a major university.

(2) Dr. Conrado (Bobby) Gempesaw, a Flipino American & an 80-20 member
for many years,
was named Provost of Miami University, OH a few
months ago. There is something about Provost Gempesaw that is very
classy, as the following story will tell.

HUMAN NATURE is such that most individuals think that their successes
are 100% their own, especially after "they've made it".
Even
when the successful ones are minorities, they tend to forget that
circumstances might have helped them succeed. Examples are our
government's Affirmative Action and progressive political forces in
their respective minority community that pushed for EQUAL
opportunity. Because of that, the successful individuals in minority
communities often don't feel obligated to mentor others in their own
community or help their community back with their resources.
That probably has been a major reason why our government STILL had
to rely on Affirmative Action to achieve diversity, 4.5 decades after its
inception.

Only those with a truly balanced mind will admit that circumstance
could have helped their successes. Provost Gempesaw belongs to
that rare category.

Even after he was named the Provost at Miami U. he stated publicly that
his earlier promotion to be Associate Provost at the University of Delaware
was partially due to the effort of an Asian Am faculty group at the
University. Don't you admire a person of such humility and integrity!

(3) Dr. Jim Yong Kim, a Korean American, became President of Dartmouth
College 2 years ago. He became the first president of an Ivy League School.

For those Asian Ams who "have made it," we admire
your achievements and look to you to remember that most of us are
not equal citizens yet. "Those to whom much is given, much is

Join the Classy Acts

Look at the classy acts, shown below.

These Asian Ams are personifications of "When the going gets tough, the
tough get going."

o 65 members joined 80-20 since "80-20 Is Dying (2)" was published 6 days
ago, of those, 9 subscribed for multi-year memberships.
o 120 members joined 80-20 since "80-20 Is Dying (1)" was published 12 days
ago. At this rate 80-20 will DOUBLE.
o Ying Yang and Haibo Huang, Moorpak, CA, upgraded their family member-
ship to Life Family Membershp.

In addition,

o Alex New of NY, NY, pledged $10,000 as a matching fund for
dues of new members.
o Charles and Lynn Zhang of Portage, MI, pledged $3,000 for a 2 to 1
matching fund for dues of STUDENT members
o S. B. Woo of Newark, DE pledged and has already paid for his last week's
$1,500 for fund matching.
o Winston Yee of Vancouver, Canada donated $1,000 to 80-20 Educational
Foundation. Wow, a generous contribution from a non-US citizen!

What is going on? Since even 80-20 itself admits
to dying, aren't people supposed to desert it like rats leaving a sinking
ship? Why are these people signing up for multi-year, even Life Member-
ships? Why are these donations in larger and larger amounts?

This outpouring of support seems counter-intuitive. However, I like to
think that We understand perfectly why these classy individuals pulled
their classy acts.

Join the classy acts & improve your own destiny at the same time.

How Asians Living Outside the US View 80-20

What do Asians living in other parts of the world think of an organization
like the 80-20?
Self-serving & useless? Or wish that there is an 80-20
fighting for them?

See the 3 emails sent respectively by Asians from Hong Kong, Australia
and Canada, all on the same day which may imply a fairly uniform
evaluation of 80-20, and all as a reaction to "80-20 Is Dying (2)". They all
showed great respect and admiration for 80-20. BTW, 80-20 doesn't
know how their e-addresses got into 80-20's 300,000 subscriber list.
80-20 focuses on communicating with Asian Am. only, and didn't solicit
such comments from within or outside the USA.

Two of the writers wanted to help 80-20 with their money. The 3rd
one wished that 80-20 could exist in Australia. 80-20 has gotten such fan
mails from Asian Australians often.

For those who haven't joined 80-20, please try to see 80-20 from the
eyes of those who observe from afar.

I would have made some donations were it not for the fact that I am not a
U.S. citizen nor U.S. resident (green card holder). Correct me if I am
wrong. But I think the law prohibits donations to PAC groups in the
U.S. from overseas nationals.

I think what you guys are doing are great. Fung, HungHee

Dear SB Woo Just a note to wish you well. What an admirable spirit!
Do hope that your vision will be sustained into the future.

In Australia most Chinese “community leaders” we are still trying to be
good fellows so that they are patted on the heads by white hands from
time to time. Chek

Dr. Woo Thank you for your emails. You are doing a fantastic job on
behalf of all Asians and should be commended for your efforts.

Would membership from an Asian Canadian be helpful for your cause?

Your past achievements are inspiring and I hope that you will continue
with your campaign for equality.

WINSTON YEE

Telephone,
Fax, and e-addresses of the authors were deleted by 80-20 as a
courtesy to them.

If the above 3 emails can't convince you to join 80-20 today,
I don't think I can do better. When 80-20 is gone & when a political
storm hits the Asian Am. community, might you wish that 80-20 is
still alive to fight for you?

Do $35 or $50 mean that much to you? If they do, d 4eb ue to financial
hardship, I sincerely hope that you'll keep the money to use them for your
family. If they don't, consider using the money for the good of our entire
community and your offspring.

80-20 Is Dying (2)!

80-20 Is Dying, Despite These Facts:

o 80-20 has delivered GREAT political deeds that many AsAms
thought impossible to achieve. See "80-20's Top 10
Accomplishments" by clicking on
http://www.80-20initiative.net/images/data/top10.pdf.
o 80-20 has a record membership year. Thanks to you, it surpassed
in 7 months its best membership record, set in 2005 after a full year.
o 80-20's has superb name recognition in the nation's political establish-
ment. Even Republican senatorial & gubernatorial candidates
now respond to 80-20's questionnaires.

Why Then Is 80-20 Still Dying?

o Political Apathy: 80-20's leadership assumed that if 80-20 could
deliver great political deeds to the community, then our community
would respond with
a) sufficient financial support so that 80-20 can be self-sustaining,
instead of depending on a few old warhorses' fanatical devotion
to the cause, working 7/12, whether on vacations or during
weekends,
b) individuals with sufficient political, financial and leadership
qualifications will step forth to take their turns to carry the
load. "Those to whom much is given, much is expected."
-- John F. Kennedy
c) young men and women will complete to serve as staff/interns for
80-20, as the best and brightest Jewish American youths had
competed to work for AIPAC (Am. Israel PAC).

Unfortunately, the hoped for support didn't come through. Could it
be that 80-20 is not worth the support? Possible! Therefore, 80-20 asks
YOU TO JUDGE. Give it the ammo to fight for you or let it die.

Beware! When 80-20 dies, all the hard-fought political gains may vanish
as well. We hope not. However, it is very likely, once the pressure is off.

o Aging Leadership: 9 different qualified individuals have been asked to
possibly serve as 80-20 President, all declined except for Kathleen To
who served 2 yrs. So the "heavy lifting" fell on one person's shoulders
time and again.

S. B. will be 74 this month, having toiled for 80-20 for 12 years at
a 7/12 pace. He has donated at least $100K directly or indirectly to
80-20. He also declared never to run for office & accept federal
appointment years ago to alley people's suspicion of his motive.. He
just can't hang on anymore. If he serves on, he'll only begin to
mis-serve his beloved Asian Am. community.

What will DOUBLING achieve?

DOUBLING will be nothing less than a political miracle, when
achieved.

America's political establishment will be SHOCKED by the following
combination of well-known facts:

o Times are bad, most Am orgs are losing paid membership drastically;
o Asian Americans are politically apathetic; and yet
o against these conditions, 80-20 doubles it membership in a year.

How would most politicians, knowing the Asian Am. bloc vote, view 80-20
from that point on? Work with 80-20! It truly has the love, affection
and support of the Asian Am. community, and that community is
awakening politically.

So DOUBLING doesn't benefit 80-20 as it BENEFITS YOU!!! Doubling
may seem an intramural achievement; actually, it is also designed to stimulate
magnificent extramural political impact. Do you have the vision to
help achieve this political miracle?

SB Will Work for YOU Still, But Differently

If DOUBLING is achieved by 12/31 of this year, S. B. still will shed the
daily chores of his current duties. Instead, he'll crisscross the nation at his
own expense to recruit able, willing and noble souls to run for 80-20
President by Nov. 2012. He'll also help to raise at least $1 million to place
80-20 Initiative on a more solid financial footing by 3/25/2013.
