Political knowledge 1: What a PAC can do in supporting political candidates

One may think that there is not much difference between "endorsing Hillary with reservation" and "endorsing Hillary".

Reality: A lot of difference. If 80-20 had endorsed Hillary, 80-20 would be independently spending at least $50,000 to buy ads in ethnic media in battle-ground states to flip votes. 80-20 knows how to buy ads in "free ethnic papers" in battleground states that those high-priced political consultants have never even heard of. In addition, 80-20 would have sent out many pro-Hillary e-newsletters and asked its supporters to forward to their friends and relatives.

Tell you what, now that the race has tightened, Sec. Clinton is probably regretting her refusal to do more for Asian Ams. In a razor-thin race, AsAms become the critical minority. Had 80-20 endorsed Hillary, we estimate that she would have gotten about 80% of the AsAm vote.

Political knowledge 2: Who works for your interests and who doesn't?

There is a easy measure. Find out who gets goodies for you and who doesn't.

(A) 80-20 considers how much good a candidates and his/her party have done for AsAms in deciding whom, and how, to endorse.

(B) Trump fans support Trump, without getting any promise in writing from Trump about helping AsAms.

[Details: Hillary answered 80-20's questionnaire satisfactorily by making promises to AsAm in writing. Trump didn't. 80-20 pressed Hillary to do more, but she refused. Hence, 80-20 endorsed her with reservation. Note that Obama's Administration tripled the number of AsAm federal judges and appointed 3 AsAm cabinet secretaries plus Chris Lu as the Deputy Secretary of Labor in charge of enforcing E.O. 11246. E.O. 11246 is the law that the federal government has used to get rid of the glass ceiling against other minorities and women. You be the judge. :-)]

Political knowledge 3: Even in politics, virtue is its own reward.

80-20 thought that its decision to endorse Hillary with reservation would be very unpopular, because it doesn't please either the Clinton or the Trump fans.

Surprisingly, 80-20 was rewarded for its faith in you. Most AsAms seems to understand that 80-20 made a judicious decision, abiding by the the best interest of the AsAms, using the "reward or punish" principle. Praises poured in. A Very Popular "Endorsement with Reservation"

Innovative Dedication

Background Information

The Delegates attending 80-20's Endorsement Convention decided to endorse Hillary Clinton with reservation. We thought that it would be a very unpopular decision, because neither Hillary fans nor Donald fans will be pleased with the above decision.

Surprise! It turns out to be very popular with our supporters. It shows that Asian Ams have become politically aware that using the principle of

Reward those politicians who share our concerns. Punish those who don't.

is the only way to EMPOWER ourselves.

Most of our supporters apparently understand that Hillary Clinton has made some good promises to us in writing, but not enough. Therefore, endorse with reservation is the right choice. In comparison, Donald Trump has not promised AsAms anything in writing.

Rewarding and Punishing Appropriately

Dear Fellow Asian Ams:

After about 6 hours of discussion and debate, 80-20's Endorsement Convention (EC) came to the following conclusion: Endorse Hillary with reservation. See Press Release. We wish we could have advanced our goal of equal opportunity more during this presidential election cycle. Nevertheless, Sec. Clinton's reply to our questionnaire, and this judicious decision by the EC to reward and punish politicians appropriately shall help. 80-20 PAC, the largest Asian American Political Action Committee, announced today its endorsement, with reservation, of Secretary Hillary Clinton for President. The unanimous decision was reached at an Endorsement Convention of elected delegates representing the membership of the 80-20 organization. Delegate positions are equally apportioned between Republicans, Independents, and Democrats. Each affiliation controls one-third of the available delegate slots. The initial vote was 19 for endorsing Clinton with reservation and 6 for other choices. At the end, the majority view received unanimous support from all delegates.

"We don't like that Sec Clinton doesn't think we are important enough to her campaign for her to talk to us," said Dr. S.B. Woo, former Lt Gov of Delaware and the founding president of 80-20PAC. Addressing Clinton directly, Woo said, "You need to re-evaluate your prioritites. We will not accept benign neglect."

The "endorse with reservations" recommendation means that 80-20 leaves it to its members who already hold a strong preference for one candidate or the other to continue that support. 80-20 will not be putting out its full effort to flip votes as they would do for a candidate who did show strong support for Asian American concerns. Undecided voters are encouraged to vote for Sec Hillary Clinton.

80-20's strength is its ability to influence the Asian American community via its extensive mailing list and its ability to aid specific candidates via independent advertising expenditures. 80-20 will be doing neither on behalf of Sec Clinton in this general election. 80-20's view is that Sec Clinton needs to re-evaluate her stance and to engage in direct dialogue with Asian Americans. The message being sent is "If you support us strongly, we will support you strongly. If you support us weakly, we will support you weakly." ....

80-20 has been getting this kind of email several times per week. Our way is to hold an EC with equal portions of Republican, Democrats and Independents, elected by all PAC members. Every Delegate who wished to speak during the EC was called upon. These delegates discussed the issues for 6 hours and come to a unanimous decision for the benefit of AsAms.

Largest Asian American PAC Endorses Hillary Clinton with Reservation

80-20 PAC, the largest Asian American Political Action Committee, announced today its endorsement, with reservation, of Secretary Hillary Clinton for President. The unanimous decision was reached at an Endorsement Convention of elected delegates representing the membership of the 80-20 organization. Delegate positions are equally apportioned between Republicans, Independents, and Democrats. Each affiliation controls one-third of the available delegate slots. The initial vote was 19 for endorsing Clinton with reservation and 6 for other choices. At the end, the majority view received unanimous support from all delegates.

80-20 endorses Sec. Clinton as the better choice of the two main candidates for President for her overall stance on minority rights and the overall better record of service of the Democratic Party to Asian Americans over the last four years in comparison to the Republican record. The endorsement is made 'with reservation' because of Sec Clinton's lack of recognition of the unique concerns of Asian Americans including the unequal higher standards in college admissions currently in place for Asian Americans. The delegates resolved that neither major candidate satisfactorily addresses Asian American concerns. Both Mr. Trump and Sec. Clinton were invited to address the delegates at 80-20's Endorsement Convention via a brief teleconference call, but neither accepted. Sec. Clinton replied to 80-20's issues questionnaire with narrative responses rather than yeses and nos. Her response was satisfactory on some points but wholly unsatisfactory on the issue of barriers to college admissions for Asian Americans. Mr. Trump did not respond to 80-20's questionnaire.

80-20's power is delivering Asian American votes as a bloc vote. This concentrates the political power of Asian Americans, the second smallest minority in the US (after Native Americans) at 4.9% of the electorate, but the fastest growing minority group in the US today. New York Times polling showed that 73% of Asian Americans followed 80-20's recommendation in the 2012 presidential election.

An interesting Endorsement related episode

Have you received emails from Sec. Clinton's campaign asking you to give $1 or more?

      Here is an interesting episode that happened just today. One of our Endorsement Convention (EC) Delegates received such an email. He replied

     "To: info@hillaryclinton.com

      I will contribute $500 if Ms. Clinton is to call into 80-20 PAC's Endorsement Convention, to be held on Saturday, 10/29.

      city, state"

     I was copied in on this correspondence and that's how I found out. :-)

     Wow, was I impressed! What dedication, shown by this noble Delegate, to advance the interests of Asian Ams! He understands that if AsAms can't get attention from a politician during election time, then we are not likely to get it AFTER the election.

    As you know, 80-20 invited Sec. Clinton to call in to our EC and ask for our support. 80-20 did it because Hillary Clinton has hardly spent any time asking for AsAm support. We want to find out if the lack of attention was accidental or if that is how she views the importance of AsAm voters.

Make your vote count

Q1: What do you mean by "making your vote count"? Every vote is counted. That is the law.

A: Your vote is numerically counted. However, the odds are ten thousand to one, or more, that the same president will be elected, regardless of how you have voted. In that sense, your vote does NOT count very much.

Q2: OK, agreed. Do you have a better way to make my vote count?

A: To make your vote count, if winning equal citizenship for yourself and your offspring is your priority, then you may want to vote according to 80-20's recommendation.

Q3: Why? Why should I let 80-20 influence my vote?

A: For 2 reasons. First, you and 80-20 share the same goal. That is, to use the presidential election as a golden opportunity to get the next president to help us achieve equal citizenship. Secondly, 80-20 can bargain with the presidential candidates, while most of you can not.

So, as 80-20 empowers you by getting goodies from the presidential candidates, you need to empower 80-20 by always voting in accordance with 80-20's recommendation. That creates a win-win.

Q4: I am getting it. 80-20 uses the AsAm bloc vote as a tool to either reward the candidate, who share our concerns, or punish those who don't. Right?

A: Right. Your support gives 80-20 clout. That clout will help AsAms to win our equal opportunity sooner.

Q5: So how do you think 80-20 will recommend this time on Oct. 29?

A: 80-20 will recommend one of the following 5 ways:
    (1) Endorse Hillary Clinton (HC); or,
    (2) Endorse Donald Trump (DT); or,
    (3) Endorse HC WITH RESERVATION, if 80-20 deems that she didn't help us enough to have earned all our votes; or,
    (4) Endorse DT WITH RESERVATION, for the reason stated above; or,
    (5) NO endorsement for either.

Comment: Wow, I love 80-20. Instead of being subservient, you have the guts to tell the presidential candidates what you think. I now understand what you meant by "making my vote count." Through 80-20, every AsAm has been empowered to reward or punish the politicians depend on whether they are willing to help us back or not. One more question, please.

Q6: What do you think of a few small groups of individuals doing endorsement of presidential candidates these days?

A: This is a free country, anyone can endorse. A point that every AsAm should ask is whether these endorsers have pressed the endorsed candidate to publicly promise helping AsAms back, if elected. That is the moral obligation of any group that wants to publicly endorse candidates, when AsAms are still 2nd class citizens. If that obligation was not fulfilled, then shame on these type of endorsers! They are placing their personal political interests ahead of the interests of the entire AsAm community.

Comment: Got it. I'll vote for our group interest so long as AsAms are not equal citizens yet. That is, I'll vote according to what 80-20 will recommend on Oct. 29.
